1 star for the NAC (and none for Shen Yun) as it has never let me down with the standards and choices of its shows, except for this one for various reasons:
Performance-wise, I was shocked at the abhorring apparent cultural appropriation of Chinese ethnic minority groups. Only Han Chinese music was used, along with what appeared to be Han dancers in "ethnic" clothing - chopstick-brandishing "Mongolians" anyone? Synchronised, repetitive, basic Chinese dance moves with a flourish of somersaults and flip-flops made up most of the dances. Also, note that there were Caucasians dressed in Han clothing on stage. Most of the audience was successfully distracted by the flowing sleeves, props, and patented graphics with a Windows XP-esque finish. Vocalists that evening were soprano TL and tenor TM. TL failed to incorporate audible dynamics in her vocal lines - forte full throttle with no phrasing. TM struggled to produce the correct notes - almost as if he was growling with vibrato qualities instead of singing - which makes the purported “authentic bel canto” technique doubtful. As “Flight of the Celestial Maidens” began, dry ice flooded the orchestra pit from the stage, momentarily obscuring the orchestra's view of the conductor. Remarkably nothing happened.
The content was equally as subpar. Emcees AW and JP spread misinformation – potentially disinformation – as they asserted that the “ethnic” and “traditional” dances they showcased could no longer be found in China. What Shen Yun presented on stage was blatantly inauthentic and stereotypical - UNTRUE “to the spirit of China’s 5000-year-old culture”. So unsurprisingly, it isn’t found anywhere else. They also claimed that China persecuted followers of the “ancient” Falun Gong neo-religion in China just because of their faith. This is not the whole story. Falun Gong (founded in the ‘90s) is allegedly an anti-CCP organisation operating under the guise of a religious movement - so it shouldn’t be shocking that the CCP would target them. That was not all. 2 of the 19 “sections” were Falun Gong propaganda canticles - “To Relay the Creator’s Call” & “The Creator Alone Can Save Us”. Sung by the aforementioned vocalists, they proclaimed, “Breaking the spell of atheism and evolution…with atheism and evolution does the Devil deceive thee”.
It’s time for some irony. New York-based Shen Yun markets itself as “reclaiming a lost heritage” when they have hilariously failed to master the basics, as shown in the erroneous Chinese characters projected on stage - the devil is in the details. In what seemed to be a Tang Dynasty-style poem – shockingly with no rhyming scheme whatsoever as there should have been – the character 它 (“it” for non-living things) was used in the word 他日 (meaning “someday” or “in the future”). The character 他 (“him/his/he”) was used instead of the character 祂 (“Him/His/He” as in religions) when referencing their “Saviour”. Embarrassing.
By the end of the “show” – a cash grab – I couldn’t believe my eyes when quite a portion of the audience – mostly middle-aged or elderly White people dressed in suits and gowns – stood up for a standing ovation for such an appalling “concert”. These unsuspecting, probably well-to-do people are the intended audience, I suppose. I DO NOT RECOMMEND going to such a hoax, scam, or whatever you want to call it. Also, DO RESEARCH before booking tickets for events at the NAC since this has been a huge let-down quality-wise if you don’t want your hard-earned money going into the pockets of a cult.

Fabulous children’s programming in the summer and throughout. Love that it’s free. Also, I appreciate the cafe quality, the diversity in programming for kids, and that children aren’t ever shamed for being kids here. The Canadian National Art Gallery has really become overbearing on security, but I find when I’m at the NAC with children, you’re not disturbed at all and your children are super supported in that environment. Also, they have the egg chairs if you want to break feed in private!

White people are not welcome in this theater. You get treated like garbage. Segregation is over so stop keeping racism alive.

Went to a show in January. Last minute walk in. Got tickets and saw the James Bond show, it was fantastic. Great location and the theatre was very nice. A really nice evening at the NAC.

A wonderful concert with the NAC orchestra & Choir. The renovations are lovely, seats more spacious. I did find that the acoustics weren't as good as usual. There seemed to be a sound disconnect at times, between the choir and orchestra. The sounds from the musicians and soloists (who were awesome) seemed to project downward, while the choir's sound projected more outward into the theatre. Also, a word of caution if you have mobility issues and park in handicapped. Be careful what spot you park in. Some are very small and cars can park perpendicular across from you. Myself and 2 other cars had to wait for 20 minutes for the owner of an SUV to arrive and move, cause noone could get out due to the angle of the parking spot and the SUV parked across from us. All in all, the concert was awesome, the NAC patrons are the most polite ever. However, I don't understand why they allow drinks into the theatre. I saw a few people spill/tip their drinks all over the place. If I may make a special shout out to one of the volunteers (blue vest) who led us to our spot, after 15 minutes being told different areas to go and to the most pleasant, helpful young lady usher - name was
Vanessa - who worked the odd side Ampitheatre, she was so nice and very helpful, one of the best!

On October 8th 2022, we had tickets for David Bowie. We got an hotel looking forward to the show. We got there and people were all turning around. We found out that the show was cancelled. No warning! The front desk said: " You must have gotten an e-mail in your junk mail" No we did not nor the hundreds of people who were irate. On top, they made us pay for parking. What a small time operation. I will direct my donations to another Art Center in the future.

This is always a great option. Going to the National Arts Centre is a great experience. This time we went for the Notre Dame de Paris play. A 5 star play & bravo to the entire cast. We had excellent time and it's well organized.

Got tickets for Shen Yun Christmas time for march 19th. March 16th I tested positive for Covid-19. I phoned their telephone support and they would not provide me a refund, they left me a voice mail “this is why we need people to be vaccinated” and I have 2 vaccines!!! Would not put me in contact with a manager to assist me completely refused to refund me. $300!!!! Donated to this scam.

Great collection of assorted styles and eras. Huge collection. A little for everyone in my opinion.
The classical selections are very varied but I do hope a more elaborate and better curated notes/ explanations. They have religious, medical , Renaissance to impressionist. I was surprised To notice futurism paintings which I find much lacking in many fine art museums.
However what I had noticed and took a picture, was not art but rather walk on the left signage on the floor for general public on the main stairway.
