The High Falls hiking trail is well marked and maintained. Quite clean (except for a couple of full "doggy" bags). The trail is not challenging with no significant climbs. The falls lookout areas have nice seating. Small children, pets and adventurers need some supervision as there is access to some precarious lookouts. It would have be en nice to have the Ontario Travel building open for at least washrooms.

This review concerns Pigeon Falls (High Falls). We drove down from Thunder Bay, about 65 kilometres south of town. Right on the US Border.
You can park in the Ontario Visitor Centre which is almost right on the border. You can literally read the signs on Canada Customs from the parking lot.
The trail to the falls starts at the north end of the parking lot. There is a small sign and you go down a few steps. It follows the highway for a short piece and then you go through a culvert and continue on the other side of the road. The trail is a 2.5 kilometre loop. At the first fork I recommend staying to the right trail (which is what the sign indicates as well). You will go up an incline and reach the lookout for the falls. They are a beautiful sight. About 30 metres (100 feet) high. You can also see the lookout platform on the Minnesota side of the river. The river is the border here.
After the falls you continue down several sets of stairs along the river and you can view the chasm on the way out. Then back to the visitor centre. The whole trip took us about an hour and 5 minutes including picture taking time.
The trail has some inclines but they are not steep and it is not too rough although you have to mind where you put your feet with roots and loose rocks in places. It is rated as an easy hike. Anyone with reasonable fitness and agility should be able to handle it. It is not handicap friendly.
This was well worth the trip. There is a $2 charge (honour system)
Also from the visitor centre you can take a boardwalk (which is handicap friendly) down to Lake Superior. Its about 350 metres I think. A nice view of the lake.

We went on 2 trails the first was on the boardwalk to the Lake and then the second was to the high falls. Both trails gave you wonderful views. The parking lot is in the travel center and unfortunately due to Covid it is closed and so are the washrooms. They should have placed a couple of pot a potties outside. That is the only draw back to the park. The park was free when we went there.

A great little trek from the Canadian side - just before the border with the States. No need to go to the American side. Well worth the drive from Thunder Bay.

Yes, this provincial park contains Minnesota's highest waterfall, High Falls. No need to cross the border, especially during these uncertain times. Across the border is Grand Portage State Park.
There are multiple trails in the park, incliding an eerie walkway that could be a good photo op place!
Don't get lost coming in! It is the very last left turn before reaching the US customs.

Nice and easy hikes to the high falls and the middle falls. Saw 2 beavers by the middle falls. Nice park.

This is an interesting park through and through. First your GPS tries to take you to the American side of it so be careful. I put in the address for the information centre to make sure this doesn't happen.
We did the boardwalk hike, part of one other hike and then the full high falls hike. It is a bit steep in a couple parts but overall not too bad. I enjoyed the hike itself and the falls are a sight to behold as well.
Also neat to see people on the other side of the border enjoying the falls too .

The last turning to the left before your're into Canadian Customs, on Hwy 61 to Duluth, is the Park. Small but very interesting plant life and a few hikes that highlight the natural growth forest and High Falls, which you must see.

On the scale of the best parks in Ontario, this little one might be mostly forgotten, but there is still enough to see here. The entrance to the park is mostly one and the same with the Ontario Information Centre at the border. There are a few walks from there, one which leads to Lake Superior and the other which leads to the falls.

Hi Lisa. Were you there in the winter? I am wondering how accessible the trail would be at this time of the year. Thanks!

Not Lisa. I suspect at this point it should be accessible with good boots. Definitely snow shoes. It gets sun so should be opening up.
