It's so sad that Via has let this iconic train experience fall into such disrepair and agony. What was once a jewel of travel in Canada is a long, sad, slow march towards oblivion.
The food is meh, but passable. The service is actually good - the employees try, but the whole thing is so very sad. 40km per hour in spots in New Brunswick - let that sink in... you can drive from the Nova Scotia border to the Quebec border in almost half the time needed by this train. Frequently extremely late, poorly maintained - stations are posts in fields or crowded strip-mall stops. No wifi in rooms - there is simply little spark left for even the hard core train aficionado (and I have top status from sitting in the corpse of this once amazing route!)
The "business class" lounge in Montreal has free soda and coffee - and a bowl of green apples. There is no Red Cap service. The dining car seating service is a rolling cart outside the lounge. The rooms are strongly dated and the 'fold down' beds of the Renaissance cars list so much they leave you with that 'rolling off the bunk' feeling for the entire night.
And all of this for nearly $1000 CAD ONE WAY - or double a return plane ticket. (The flying experience is also disastrous, but at least it's over with quickly.)

If you want to get there quick, fly. If you want to get there on your own schedule, drive. The only reason to take the 'Ocean' to Halifax from Montreal, like we did, is because you like riding on trains.
You'll see parts of the country others won't see, and parts the tourist board would rather you not have seen, and you will have to talk to people and be social. Typical train stuff.
These are NOT modern Japanese bullet trains but mid-20h century work horses. Don't expect a solid sleep--the train stops and starts all night. That's North American train travel. (Pro tip: bring blinders and ear plugs for better sleeping.)
And yes, your probably going to be hours late. That's also long-distance train travel in North America.
We travelled by sleeper car: two bunks by night, two seats by day, Ensuite restroom. The Renaissance sleepers may or may not have showers. Luck of the draw. The Budd sleeper cars do have showers. The Renaissance cars are from the 1990s. The 'Ocean' uses a mix of these and Budd cars made in the 1950s. (The Budds are more comfortable).
The service attendants are all friendly and efficient: Via employees are top-flight in this aspect. The food is Good to OK, but you're on a train, so set your expectations, Three sit-down meals with good coffee, wine, and a tablecloth.
The attendants put on a gratis wine tasting and gave some clever cultural talks about Nova Scotia, in the lounge car. No observation cars on this run. The Vancouver -Toronto 'Canadien' gets all those. Instead they have a car with all coach seats but not used for coach passengers. If you're in the sleepers you can hang out in this car whenever you get tired of your room and the lounge car.

Very dingy sleeper car. Meals were very mediocre. Train was 3 hours late to Halifax. Tickets are expensive and this is NOT worth it. Could have flown, spent 2 nights in a luxury hotel and had great meals for the price they have a lounge area for sleeper plus which only seats about 10 people and there is no bar and no service.
Positives: staff is friendly. Views amazing.

Montreal to Halifax overnight is a good if not amazing train journey. Taken as the third part of my Pacific to Atlantic trip over 2 weeks.
Best not to try to compare with The Canadian as the two are run and funded quite differently.
So this journey was in sleeper plus in an open section berth which was very easy to sleep in. A bench seat during the day and conveniently close to washroom and shower. Excellent service from the sleeping car attendant who made everything run smoothly.
Meals included in the ticket price of approx £300 were adequate.
But the views are exceptional.
Rather strange car sequence though meaning a long walk through economy, comfort plus seating and a rather sparse service car to get to the dining car?
Was it worth it? Of course, there is not another like anywhere else, is there!

Quebec City to Halifax. This was an awful experience. So rough that I am still bruised all over from banging into hard metal surfaces in our roomette. No space to move. Apparently it is rarely on time. We were 2 hours late and that is considered good. We crept along at times due to wet leaves on the tracks. Other times we were moving fast and very rough. They call it “vintage” but really it’s just old and shabby. At least we had air moving in our room, others were hot and stuffy. When the beds were put up, the bench seat was too shallow to sit comfortably,so we sat in the lounge car (which also had wi-fi sort of. ) We thought there was a dome car, but no.
The staff and attendants were polite and helpful, especially Peter.but, It was 22 very long hours.

This ancient train makes Amtrak look good! We got a sleeper car with a shower. There was no sleeping and no showering possible. Noisy, rattling, rocking, cramped and generally awful with prefab meals. It is not cheap and apparently is regularly 3-5 hours late arriving to Halifax from St. Foy (near Quebec so why not just leave from Quebec Via Rail?) Retire this relic from the 1950s! I expected much more. A real disappointment.

Great experience with clean bedding and decent food. We went sleeper class so it wasn’t cheap. I’d recommend it to go one way for the experience but not both. Time keeping is certainly not a strength (4 hours delay each way that the staff seemed to almost be expecting) - so don’t have other time critical commitments at the end of a journey as you may not make them.

My husband and I took the sleeper train from Halifax to Montreal and booked the sleeper berth, which had bunk beds. I had to sleep on the upper bunk because my husband uses a CPAP machine and needed to be on the lower bunk. The berth is minuscule, old and claustrophobic. I was trapped on the upper bunk for 7 hours and got no sleep due to the extremely bumpy ride caused by poorly maintained rail tracks. The mattress is on top of a metal base which caused me to feel every bump and vibration as if my back was being bombarded with rocks. I was in agony for the entire time I was in bed. The only time I got a tiny bit of relief was when the train made stops. I am so sorry we wasted the money to take this nearly 24 hour train which caused me to suffer and caused me back pain which persists a week after the ride. The menu sounded good but food was sub par. We would have been much better off, time wise and $, to fly rather than take this train, which is ridiculously expensive for the experience. I can't imagine anyone being able to get a decent night's sleep in the sleeper cars with bunk beds!

We didn’t expect the Orient Express but this was really terrible. We booked a two person cabin with bathroom but we knew that the cabins with shower facilities were booked out. We ended up in a shared berth which was like an overhead locker on a plane. We weren’t seated together. There was no where to change and there was a shared loo which was right across from my berth and the smell was overwhelming. The boarding was chaotic and everyone seemed to be fed up including the staff and it was hard to blame them. We decided to leave as 21 hours in those conditions was not what we wanted on our holiday. Grim.. Via really need to do better with this product.

23 hours in a sleeper cabin to go from Halifax to Montreal (ran 2 hours late).
Positives;-
Nice food
Friendly staff
Negatives ;-
Absolutely grim, dated and tiny sleeper cabin- so small that you couldn’t put the bed down and be in the room. Felt like a coffin.
Pace of the train slower at times than a metro system yet at others fast and very bumpy. 3 hours sleep maximum.
No announcement of the fact that the train was going to be delayed until1 hr past the scheduled arrival time!
The only real scenic bits in the daylight were the early Nova Scotia parts.
No WIFI in the cabins which is woeful in 2024.
Attendants were chatting well into the small hours which became a challenge to try and sleep through

We are planning a trip to Eastern Canada for May/June 2019. We would like to include the VIA "Ocean" train journey. Advice please as to if west to east is better than east to west. Some previous comments make reference to the fact that the seats face in a certain direction. (a) is this a fact and (b) is this just in the cabins or is it an issue in the main seating areas. Many thanks. Don Dublin Ireland.

Since you are free to move around in the train and have access to the dome cars if you have a sleeper cabin, direction isn't that important as far as viewing is concerned. The big issue is the schedule - part of the trip necessarily takes place at night. So you should check the schedule and see which part of the trip you won't see due to nightfall. Then you can pick a direction based on viewing priorities.
BTW, we thought the trip was anything but grim! It doesn't match a five-star hotel, but why would you expect that?!? The food was much better than we expected, and the service was great! We plan to do it again in the opposite direction.

Are there any tours from Halifax to Peggy's Cove? or do you need to rent a car? Can yu rent a car in Halifax?
كُتب بتاريخ 25 مارس 2018
I don't know about the tours but yes you can and we did rent a car. There are several rental locations right downtown.

Hello,
I am considering taking the Ocean Train from Montreal to Moncton next august and I wonder if it is worth the sleeper option versus the significantly more economical Escape fare. Any advice on how to get discounts would be much appreciated. Thanks! (Ramón, from Madrid, Spain)
كُتب بتاريخ 12 يناير 2018
ViaRail emails a list of discounted fares every Tuesday. Go to their Web site and sign up for it. I cannot guarantee that The Ocean will be listed, but it is worth a try. Also keep in mind that the Canadian dollar is a bargain today, so check the exchange rate. Now, as to the sleepers, I felt the cost was worth it. The compartment was fairly large, clean, and comfy. Good bed, chairs. Nice amenities. Private toilet and sink in the room. And you get exclusive access to the Park Car, a very elegant way to travel.

Does the Ocean train go to the airport from Halifax as we will need to hire a car once we get to Montreal we are looking at the going in the fall to see all the leaves. Thanks in advance.

We are joining the train in Quebec City, booked into a sleeping compartment on the Park Car. It is described as a "double cabin" as it has 2 lower berths instead of the upper and lower, is there a photo of this configuration anywhere other than the schematic of the train car shown on the Via website? Also, by the time we board it will be nearly 11 pm, will they ask us at that point about a breakfast reservation time for the next morning or is there a way to do this ahead of boarding the train? Thanks.
