A Wainwright bagging walk, just after dawn to avoid the heat for my Labrador.
First time I had done these three. An excellent walk, blessed with fabulous clear weather.
The views towards Scafell is excellent , a real sense of height.
Technically easy to do.

Just a wonderful walk. The same starting point as the Bowfell walk from the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel (there are many other starting points) through Stool End farm, ignore the first right over the band and continue over the footbridge and onward to turn right just before Red Tarn. You will be amply rewarded for your efforts; the views are spectacular with the Lake district, the Irish Sea and the distant Pennines all laid out before you. Crinkle Crags is one of those must do walks in the Lake District

The Band from Langdale is the preferred route as it is predominantly stepped and easy going - no scrambling until the last 50m where the summit is surrounded by boulders. The Three Tarns is a wonderful waymark and rest point before the final few hundred feet climb to the summit. The views from the Three Tarns are spectacular. The Old Gungeon Ghyll Hotel offers cheap parking at £3 per day donation to the Air Ambulance (pay at reception, but only a few spaces available), or you can pay over twice as much to the National Trust for their carpark. Be aware NT carparks in the area only take coins, so stock up on £1 and £2 coins (or joint the NT and park for free).

This is the 25th year the same group of us has walked in the Lakes. It's an annual expedition featuring walking, beer and a lot of laughs. This year we went up Bowfell, via The Band, the Climbers' Traverse and Great Slab. It's not an easy stroll so it takes some planning, you'll need to take proper kit and the descent can be a killer on the knees but read it up, research and plan to end up in the Old Dungeon Ghyll for a couple of pints of Bluebird. Probably a 12 mile round trip the way we did it.

Having had this hill on my todo list for more than 25yrs I thought it about time I got myself up it to see what it is really like and dragged a friend along with me. We set out from Dungeon Ghyll Hotel at 8:45am and parking was no problem, car park was full on our return at 2:30pm. The walk out through Oxendale was glorious, the climb up to Cold Pike was a good wake up and blew the cobwebs away, from here to Crinkle crags is an easier walk with some good rocky crags to climb over and an interesting summit to explore. We met hoards climbing up from the valley onto Bow Fell, another short sharp climb and good to get the blood moving, finally a short drop and up again to Esk Pike, before descending to Angle Tarn and back to Langdale, a round trip of about 12miles and over 3000ft of climbing. It's not a route for the feint hearted and certainly tested my fitness level which I would rate as fair given I'm in my 50's. We did it on a stunning day with clear views in all directions, and whilst it was busy we also found some quiet spots for breaks and places to eat. Not my favourite Lakeland walk but certainly in my top 10! If you go for it, make sure you are properly equipped and get local advice, especially on the weather. In poor conditions it is not a place to find yourself under prepared.

The title was the response of my daughter introducing her Lake District ingenue boyfriend to this magnificent mountain. She had never scaled Bowfell before and was keen to give him a memorable introduction to fell walking using me as tour guide. The day was not as warm as my visit last November (see previous post) but nevertheless we had an excellent day covering just under 12 miles in total.
And just to show that there is always something new for an old hand like me to learn, there is now a path that avoids the bad step on the second Crinkle. If you are approaching from the Bowfell end, take a path to the right from the third Crinkle.
A wonderful day out for the keen fell walker.

Starting in sunlight 10am at the Old Dungeon Ghyll, following Hell Gill to avoid most of the wind, one of the party took a short swim in the rock pool. then dried off, we all proceeded to the rocky summit. The reverse route down 'The Band' got us back to the 4 o'clock bus.

For a few years I have always wanted to visit Crinkle Crags and a couple of weeks ago my desire was fulfilled, and it was all I wanted it to be.
What appealed to me was the varied nature of the walk, from the beautiful walk-in with the Crags towering ahead the whole way. Then ascending beside the waterfall to Red Tarn and then up to the first Crinkle.
The weather, terrain and the company were wonderful. My only disappointment was that we did not have enough time for Bowfell, but that was because we were a bit slow setting off

Great walk over the crags and Bowfell although we lost the path at the top of the crags as it almost doubles back on itself to the right and there is a cairned path straight on which eventually vanishes...6 hrs
