‪Can't say enough good things about both the campervan and the company that rented it to us. The vehicle is a standard Chevy van, outfitted with the most complete and efficient camping setup imaginable. We spent 6 weeks driving through Patagonia, all the way to Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego. The van made it through some very challenging roads, unpaved, twisty and steep. We were able to camp in some of the most remote and beautiful spots in the world. ‬

‪We rented a camper for 3 weeks in Punta Arenas, Chili for a one-way trip to Santiago. The camper was never delivered because of damage. They took us on hold for 16 days! We received a pick-up in between and had to travel by hotels/cabana's and eat in restaurants. Than we heard that the camper was not allowed to travel higher than Chaitén. We had to book an extra flight to Santiago and an extra eirtier flight back home to Holland. No compensation!!!‬

‪Below I share the experiences my wife and I gathered during a 36-day 9,000-km drive through some of the most remote parts of Northern Chile and Argentina traveling in a Toyota Hilux camper from Camper Travel Chile. While overall we had a SENSATIONAL holiday, there are some points that you may want to consider before renting from this company.

The most important questions first. Would we rent from Camper Travel Chile again? Definitely. Would we do some things differently? Definitely. Please read on to see the details.

COMMUNICATION: We tend to plan our main holidays well in advance, and I started searching for vehicles about a year before the dayes of our actual trip. After some research and reading reviews, we chose to go with Camper Travel Chile. They had good reviews, offered the type of vehicles we wanted, allowed their vehicles into neighboring countries, and responded to all our questions in a timely and professional manner. Although it was only my wife and I traveling together, we selected the four-person Toyota Hilux double-cab camper. We had very good reasons to choose this slightly more expensive version, which I will explain further below. We paid our deposit about nine months before the trip, maintained communications, and even received a couple of video clips that showed "our" vehicle. In short, everything went well.

VEHICLE COLLECTION: Less than 24 hours before pick-up we received a text from the company informing us that due to a mechanical problem the double-cab was not available and it would be replaced by a single-cab version. There was no other alternative, so we had to accept the change. Otherwise everything went as previously discussed and planned. It took about 2 hours to go through the paperwork, check the inventory, and receive a brief explanation about the various operating systems (heating, charging, water pump, etc.). Eevrything went well, and the meeting was friendly and professional.

SINGLE-CAB vs. DOUBLE-CAB: Unexpectedly, this last-minute change had the biggest negative impact on our holiday. We had reserved the double-cab to benefit from the extra space up front. We had planned to use the second row of seats and the footwell for the various bits and pieces that we wanted to have easily accessible, and for the pieces that we knew wouldn't conveniently fit in the camper cabin. These included our photo and film gear (three cameras, five lenses, tripod, filters, etc.), drone, climbing gear (ice axes, hiking poles, etc.), 25-30 liters (5-6 large bottles) of extra drinking water, goosedown jackets, etc. Not having quick and easy access to our photo gear was a significant inconvenience. Finding space for the extra water bottles in the camper cabin was a challenge. At the end we stored them in the shower/toilet cabin, but they had to be moved every time we wanted to use the space. We also wanted to buy camping chairs and a camping table, which would have been stored on the back seat of the double-cab, but with the single-cab it was no longer an option. Reading these lines may not give the proper sense, but not having that second row of seats made our holiday significantly less enjoyable. In hindsight, we should have insisted that we wait until the mechanical problem of the double-cab vehicle we reserved got fixed.

THE VEHICLE: The Toyota Hilux had about 41,900 km on the clock when we picked it up. Not a brand-new car, but it looked well-maintained, clean, and well-preserved. It was a completely bare-bones version, equipped only with the absolute basics. Pretty much no electronics that could break down on the shaky dirt roads. With the camper on the back, it didn't drive as a "normal" pick-up truck. The extra weight and the increased air resistance meant that we had to run it at much higher revs, shifting gears later, and never using the sixth gear. It was hard driving; for comparison, the Mazda BT-50 4x4 pick-up truck we rented later in Patagonia felt like cruising in a Porsche. In general, the mechanical quality of the Hilux (as one would expect) was top-notch, and we never had thoughts of "what if we break down here". Even under the most extreme circumstances it performed excellently. We spent nights above 4,200 meters in temperatures below -20 Celsius, we drove above 5,300 meters, crossed knee-deep icy rivers, tackled very steep and slippery sections, and the Hilux never failed us.

THE TIRES: This was a significant issue that could have had a disastrous impact on our holiday. The vehicle had brand-new front tires, but the rear ones were heavily worn. Sadly, in our excitement of moving into the car and starting our holiday I didn't pay much attention to it when we were collecting the vehicle. After a couple of days, however, I started worrying. The tread in some parts of the tires was less than 2 mm (which in some countries make them illegal on the roads). With the huge extra weight of the cabin on it, it was a source of serious concerns. I took a photo of the tires and texted it to the company, expressing my concern for our safety. They responded that those tires should be OK. Well, they were not. As soon as we hit the first unpaved stretch (between Putre and Colchane), our rear got a puncture. Knowing that the roads ahead of us would be much more challenging and we would be going to some very remote locations, I had a sleepless night. I woke up in the morning with the decision that to save our holiday we must buy a set of new tires, regardless of the costs. I was worried about our safety, and I didn't want to spend time on changing and fixing old and worn tires that I suspected would have many punctures. The nearest city of any size was Iquique, a four-hour drive from our overnight stop in Colchane. As we started the drive down to the cost, I texted the company to inform them about this decision and asked them to call ahead to a few tire shops to check if they had the proper size in stock. Without going into details, I can say that we didn't get much help from the representative of Camper Travel Chile. Fortunately, my wife and I had lived and worked in Latin America (back in the 1990s) and we both speak Spanis, so we managed to figure out where to go. After a couple of hours of driving around in Iquique, we managed to find a shop that carried the right size and right quality. It took us a whole day and cost us about €400 (plus 80 liters of diesel) to sort this out, but I know that this saved our holiday. A lesson learned--always check the tires before driving off the lot. NOTE: after we returned the vehicle, the company agreed to refund €350 (of which €200 already arrived and another €150 is promised--I will update this post if/when it arrives).

FUEL CONSUMPTION: Fuel consumption was also much higher, especially on the open highways where we would drive at 100-110 km/hour. It was much better on the dirt roads and bumpy tracks of the north, where frequently we could do at most 20 km/h. Overall, over the entire trip, we averaged 11.5 liters of diesel per 100 km. If you choose this model, be prepared to carry extra diesel. Especially in Northern Chile outside Arica and Pozo del Monte, there are no gas stations. Diesel might be available (at a 60% surcharge) in some small shops, but you never know where (guest houses, pharmacies, restaurants, etc.) and the quality is questionable. We had two jerry cans from Camper Travel Chile and bought two more at a gas station in Arica. This gave us an extra 80 liters of diesel that together with the full tank gave us a 1200 km range on these dirt roads in the north. We never had to touch the fourth jerry can, but it was reassuring to know that we had it.

THE CAMPER INTERIOR: Everything worked perfectly. No problem with the fridge, no problem with the heating system, no problem with the stove. The equipment provided (pots, pans, cutlery, etc.) were basic but sufficient. Everything as listed on the inventory that had been shared with us about a month before the trip. There was no barbeque set, no camping chairs and table, but we knew about it in advance. The upholstery had some nasty stains (my wife found them somewhat disturbing and asked for a few blankets to cover them). Sadly, the bed on top of the driver cabin in the single-cab we received was smaller than the one in the double-cab we booked. We found it not very comfortable for two people, so most of the time only one of us slept up there and the other one down--which forced us to convert the seating place into a bed and then back into the seating arrangement every day. It was an inconvenience that we wanted to avoid by renting the double-cab. WARNING: If you plan to cross the border into Argentina, please note that the gas canisters in Argentina come in different sizes (so they didn't fit into the space in our vehicle) and use different valves (so the Chilean canisters couldn't be refilled). As a result, we ran out of gas after about two weeks in Argentina; no cooking, no heating, no water heating. Needless to say, this was a huge inconvenience, especially when nighttime temperatures dropped far below freezing. I am still baffled that Camper Travel Chile prepares the paperwork for its vehicles to cross the border yet they don't include a 10-dollar valve converter in their kit (which is easily available to purchase in Chile but we couldn't find anywhere in Argentina). This forced us to cut our Argentina itinerary short by a few days.

OVERALL: We had an excellent holiday, one that we hope to be able to repeat in 2025. The Hilux performed exceptionally well, allowed us to reach parts of Chile and Argentina that would have been off-limits with a conventional vehicle or a simple non-4x4 camper. There were days when we didn't see another human being or any sign of human habitation. We had full confidence in the vehicle (with the new tires), and never hesitated to drive anywhere. Driving up to 5,300 meters on an old mining track on the side of a volcano or spending the night alone on the shore of Termas de Polloquere, or under the sheer walls of Farellones, or on the endless white surface of a salar are experiences that we will always cherish, and experiences that we could not have enjoyed otherwise. At the end of the trip we spoke with the vehicle maintenance team and were impressed by their "caring". They were keen to hear about our experiences and wanted to know how we thought they could improve on the design and the equipment. They proudly showed us the new models, explained what they wanted to do to reduce condensation in the camper cabin, spoke about improvements they had in mind, and displayed a level of professionalism that I found very impressive and promising for the future.

Despite some of the critical comments I made in this review, the "4-star" rating is well deserved. Camper Travel Chile is a small and growing, one where everybody wants to do well. Thank you for a great holiday.‬

‪In short, good option if everything goes well with the car, but really terrible if it doesn’t. Just know that once you take on a ride with Camper Travel, you are on your own, at your own expense.

Longer version: One thing I have always heard about Patagonia is that things never go as planned. Well I did not expect to start with the car rental.

Poor communication - communication with Sebastián (sales lead) was difficult and uncoeherent. Very low time response and lots of follow ups required from my side. Sometimes it wasn't there at all. The examples below affected my trust, as a customer, right from the first day out of my 6-week trip.
Example 1: upon the car pick-up, the car was totally different from what I have ordered online, not a small Suzuki Jimmy but rather a pick-up from a chinese brand that I have never heard before. While I was being talked to into the advantages of this car over the other, I was given no option either than accepting it because there were "no other cars available". I was cornered, either accept or cancel my trip. The car itself was good which I only found out later after accepting it, but the communication with the customer should have been there. Once I approached this the reaction was that I "(...) got a better a car than what paid for (...)" but for me that wasn't the point.
Example 2: I wanted to be insured to the maximum to cover any incidents. I was told previously that there was an insurance that would cost 850eur with a deductible of 450eur in damage - some sort of 'premium insurance'. Upon car pick-up suddenly that insurance was not available anymore and I was led to stick to the basic insurance. After a second call with the sales lead (Sebastián) then the insurance suddenly existed again and I went ahead with It.

Poor customer relationship mgmt - regardless of what happens on the road whether it is an accident, or some part of the car structure gets loose and breaks; The customer is ALWAYS fully accountable with no room for arguement/defense.
Example 3: the kitchen of my van got loose with use - probably I could have been more gentle with It too - but haven't the kitchen gotten a strong reinforced support for the heavy weight it carried this would never happened (tiny and few screws were supporting It). I took the car to the mechanic and he shared the same statement directly with Camper Travel. However, Camper Travel still held me fully accountable for the damage (which was later deducted from my 2000eur guarantee), rejecting the possibility of sharing the cost as I suggested.
Example 4: upon car drop off we did a general check to the car and signed the respective papers without any damage to report. From then onwards, the responsibility is on Camper Travel. Nevertheless, 36h later Sebastián reached out to me stating that there was damage in the tent and they would deduct It from the guarantee. Not only this is unfair It is also illegal. Camper Travel Chile held my guarantee of 2000eur for longer than 72h while the contract states 24h.

Low maintainance - the add-ons which are built on the car get damaged with use overtime, its normal. It is necessary however to invest on maintainance and supervision before car handover. Example 5: again, the kitchen sliding support was not enough and required further reinforcement. The plastic straps for opening the tent were overused and dry - I could not open it without using a supplementary tool. The pipe for draining the water from the sink broke during the car pick-up. It took 5 minutes for one of the guys from the crew to fix on the spot but broke again later with use - which I ended up fixing myself. The air chamber of the spare wheel was one size smaller than the actual tire - putting constant pressure on the air chamber - so I ended up being stuck at the middle of no where in the carretera austral at 6pm as the spare wheel blew up 10 minutes later after replacing it (ended up staying overnight and hitchiking next day with the wheel).
Regardless of my transparent approach throughout the whole trip - by reporting all incidents related to overuse or negligence on pick-up - I was held accountable for all incidents in the end and consequently got them deducted on my guarantee, despite of my repetitve explanations.

All in all, accidents/incidents happen and we need to deal with it, its fine. What it is the most unfortunate is that when you bring this up, you are received with non-constructive statements like the following ones, and makes you feel isolated: "you Broke It (...) It is at your own cost.", "(...) The van has been used by other people in the past and they had no problem". "(...) This would have happened in the first rental".

We just cannot expect to have a fair customer oriented support when we have a number oriented sales lead dealing with the customers.

As a last point, I contacted several times the founder (Rodrigo) to request support and I never got any reaction, reinforcing once again a poor customers experience.

Avoid the emotional distress on your vacation and go for an alternative. Wicked or Cóndor campers are betters players out there - though products are a slightly different, they LISTEN to the customers.‬

We rented the Pucon Camper for a month in January 2021. Probably the best camper provider you can find in Chile.
Very friendly contact person who is very easy to reach and reliable. To be emphasized is the willingness to help with various topics that have nothing to do with the camper (Chilean SIM card, etc.). This is very helpful for foreign travelers. In addition, the contact person speaks German and Spanish and most likely also English.
The camper is a dream and very suitable for the landscape and the quality of the roads in Chile. Everything you need is with the camper or can be rented.‬
