‪Chillapata Wildlife Sanctuary is in the Dooars region of Alipurduar, West Bengal. It is about 200 km away from Bagdogra Airport and takes about 4hrs drive. We were five people travelling together in the month of November. There is a wonderful West Bengal Forest Department's Hotel called Malangi Tourist Lodge ( At Barodabri ) where we put up for two nights on 15th & 16 November 2019. The best rooms that we stayed in were Sankosh and Raidak. The hotel is just by the side of the forest. The Manager of the hotel, Mr Madan Barman was an extremely nice person and all the stuff were excellent. The food was simple but very very good. We went for a Jeep Safari ( There is also an elephant safari ) in the early morning. The jungle is extremely dense and there is no metallic road inside. It is so dense that the trees and shrubs would touch both the sides of the Jeep. The smell and the aroma of the jungle is soul satisfying. We were almost in a trance with the beauty of the forest. It is not important whether you see any animal or not. Just enjoy the colour of the jungle, the Scent of the forest. We could see a couple of Rhinos, wild boars, and the call of the barking deer. There were also some bleeding trees called " Ramgua Trees" whose colour of the Sap is blood red. Long long ago there was a kingdom called Nall Rajar Kingdom and a fort ( now completely swallowed by the forest ). The jungle is so dense that it could be called a " forest blanket ". The safari took about 2 1/2 hrs - 3 hrs. Next we headed for Bauxa Tiger Reserve. I have visited many forests of India and five National parks of Kenya ( Africa ) but I really had fallen in love with the beauty of Chillapata forest.‬

‪We have to book the Jungle safari through the West bengal Tourism development Corp. We have a counter near the forest where we booked our trip. We took an evening trip. They have 3-4 trips in a day ( morning and evening). Best option is to go for the morning or later in the evening as the chances of spotting wildlife is bettter. The Safari takes you 2 hours in the jungle. The guides here try their best to get views of wildlife but sometimes you may spot only few wild life. The jungle is really dense.

We spotted Bison, wild boar , peacock, hornbill ..We couldn't spot elephants in our case.‬

‪Chilapata is a renowned and dense forest. Chilapata forest comes under Alipurduar district and closes to Hasimara Town . Enriched with flora and fauna Chilapata forest forms an elephant corridor between Jaldapara National Park and Buxa Tiger Reserve.
Chilapata is a hub of wild animals like large number of elephants, bison, deer, leopard, lesser cats, barking deer etc. are available in the forest. People can also enjoy the jungle safari.‬

‪It's a small forest between Buxa Tiger Reserve and Jaldapara National Park, an elephant corridor. Once it was the hunting ground of Koach kings. In ancient past it was an outpost fortress of Gupta Empire, and was the capital of Nal Kings. It has a ruin structure inside the forest, in front of the structure there are few trees, which bleed like animals. It's also home to elephants, leopards, gaur, deer. Don't get into the forest alone, take a local guide from forest office as you may face wood poachers. ‬

‪It was the hunting ground of the Koch Dynasty of Cooch Behar. I have not seen such a dense forest any where. Elephant, bison and rhinoceros are seen in this forest. A special tree named 'Ramgua' is found only in this forest , the gum comes out from such a tree is red and thick like blood. ‬

‪The forest road leads to Chilapata Forest village through the sanctuary is simply awesome. In broad daylight we discovered some wild elephants in the jungle. On our return journey we saw a group of 17 bisons. In between those journeys we stayed 2days in Chilapata and variety of wildlife, beauty of Bania river, early morning view of Kanchanjunga peak made our tour memorable. Chilapata is something which is more than expected to me and my fellow friends.‬

‪The jungle of Chilapata is quite dense compared that to Jaldapara. Its on the other side of the river Torsa. Jaldapara is known as the grassland & Chilapata is the woodland. Chances of sighting, is more in Jaldapara. You will love the density of the forest. The "Ramsupari" tree is an unique tree you can see, which bleeds when cut. There are ruins of an old fort of the king of Coochbihaar, built in the 1700 for fighting with the Kingdom Bhutan at that point of time.

It's near the Hasimara Air-force Station - 20 Km away from Jaldapara Forest entry gate. There are 2 entry points to this forest, one through Chilapata & the other through Kodal para.

If you love exploring jungle, don't give this a miss‬
