Multiply the birding experience we pictured many times over. Ride the ancient water channels through the creeks and reeds on the north of Chilika Lake. Every look through the bins shows at least a dozen different water birds going about their routine. An open-billed stork with a cricket ball sized mollusc, a grey heron struggling to swallow an oversized frog. Golden plovers, bronze winged jacanas, water hens, pin tails, shovelers ... Among the reeds a different world of swallows, warblers.
To make sense of it all is a knowledgeable local guide. Trained and employed by Madhu Behera of the Mangalajodi Conservation and Tourism Trust. They are encouraged to keep reading and learning from birders who flock to this site from all over the world.

This place is amazing from Oct to Feb. You should reach there before sun rise for the morning ride and the last ride closes by 2:30 PM. It’s a 3 hr boat ride for Rs. 1200. Managed by Odisha Tourism.

Go early morning to see more birds. We went mid day. Lots of see . Costs 1200 per boat. Boatmen are quite knowledgeable. If a choice I’d prefer to go to sitopada.

Mangaljodi is a bird sanctuary situated 75 km from Bhubaneswar. It's a marshland on the northern edge of chilka lake. It's a bird watchers' paradise. Best time to visit this place is during the winter season when a lot migratory birds visit it. Birds migrate from Ladakh and Himalayan region, Central and South east Asia, Mongolia, and Russia etc and this marshland hosts nearly 300000 birds during winter months.
Mangaljodi is a classic example of poachers turned into protectors. Due to rampant poaching the number of birds had reduced to about 5000 only about 25 years ago. Now the entire community of fisherman who depend on Chilka for their survival, are protecting it and depending on tourism for their livelihood. Some of them have become guides, know the name and origin of all types of birds. One must reach there early in the morning for better sighting of birds. There are cottages available nearby for staying too. There are no restaurants nearby, but one can get some tea and snacks. Toilet facility is available at the site.
You can hire a boat on arrival and each boat comes with a guide. Our guide Dibas was an excellent guide and we could see a large number of birds. This was my second trip to Mangaljodi and I would love to visit it in future.

This place is around 66 km from Bhubaneswar in odisa state.There are few buses that stops at Tangi which is 5km from Mangalagudi wetlands.We need to go inside for 2 km from railway gate.We can sight lot of birds if we walk for this 2kms instead of going in a vehicles.On both sides of the road we can lot of migratory and resident birds like Open bill storks,Purple Moorhens,Northern Pintails,Gaganeys,Spot Billed ducks,Egrets,Ibis,Purple heron,Grey Heron,Brahmaney ducks,Greylag goose,Cormorants,Kingfishers,Terns ,Sand Pipers etc.At the end of the road we can find a watch tower from where we can hire a boat for 1200 rs.

Mangalajodi is the northern part of Chilka Lake. It's marshy wetlands. We went there in November when the migratory birds had already started coming. Gorgeous place with zillions of birds, local and migratory. The boat men were formerly hunters who have been converted to being guides. Their knowledge of the birds is amazing. They know their scientific names, their food, their habitat etc etc. And best part they can't read! They are so polite and helpful. Full of knowledge. If one wants to know more, they have books on these birds. Only country boats are allowed so that the birds are not disturbed. This is the best part of Chilka!

I recently visited Manglajodi and yes the reviews on Tripadvisor really helped me. Especially reviews of Shantashil, Sibabrata and Vijay K helped me to take a decision to visit Manglajodi and its worth a visit. Most information about it is already there in the reviews but adding something from my side.
Its around 2-2-1/2 hrs drive from Puri. Madhu Behra (96912122456) is the right person for the boat. Really nice and cool person no fuss simple and very reasonable. The boatman was very knowledgeable. For birdwatchers its a paradise but even for layman like us it was a beautiful experience it was so peaceful. We could see so many variety of the birds here. The good thing was that the boats are manually driven but could still hear some motor boats when asked our boatman said that its of the local villagers which is allowed for them but for tourists the boats are manually driven. It takes around 2 hours in the lake (It will take you longer if you are a photographer or a bird watcher) for before entering the boat make sure you carry water and something to eat. Also there were not much options even before entering the boat as there were just 1 or 2 tapris having tea and biscuits and coconut water etc. One of the tapri had egg omlet. We also could not find good decent place to eat enroute to and from from Puri to Manglajodi. It took us almost 7 hours from Puri and back to Puri and could not find a decent place to eat so plan accordingly. I really feel that this place should remain like this only, commercialisation will spoil its beauty.
The water in the lake is 2-3 foot only and best time to visit is Nov to Feb when maximum migratory birds visit the lake.

Unbeliable experience. The review by Mr Vijau from UK was very helpful.
Connecting Mr Madhu Behra, who acts currently as an ambassador for protecting the ecosystem was our guide inside the wetland. Very very helpful person. His story reminds that of Valmiki Muni of Ramayan. You must pre book him (9692122456).
Best time to visit is early/mid January. Birds starts arriving from Nov .
Its better to have your food or seek help from Madhu jee beforehand.
You love birding or meditating... u ud lovevthis. Nearest Railway Station is Khurda Road. Its 70Km away from Puri/BBSR

A Bird watchers paradise. October was just beginning for migrating birds. November to February is the best time to visit. Nearby accommodation is the only challenge.

Is the Time late August is suitable to go to Mangalajodi for only bird photography

Hello,
It will be rainy season and migratory birds typically leave in end March. They arrive in Oct end or later. You will see only resident birds. May not be a good idea if you want to see migratory birds.

We are planning a family trip to Mangalajodi with a 10yr old interested in Birds in the last week of Dec. I would like to know what is the best way to Book the Tour and approximate cost involved? Is this something we have to do in advance or can be fixed upon arrival at Mangalajodi? We are 2 adults and a child. Plan is to visit on a day trip from Bhubaneshwar starting morning 9am. Also is the Nature trail included in the tour? Thanks for your time in advance! Regards, Sri

Been there in October. The place is awesome. The stays are basic but comfy, good local food. If you aren't able to find bookings, still worth a day trip from Puri. Start early though. The place will be teeming with birds by the last week of Dec.
Can one stay at Puri/ Bhubaneshwar and do a single day return trip to Manglajodi? Thank you in advance.

Yes. You can. Puri to Manglajodi is about 2 ~ 3 hours by car. So if you start by 5am you should be at Manglajodi around 7.30am. And you can finish your birding session by 12, and then drive back. There is also a nice eco-tourist resort at Manglajodi, where you can drop by and / or have your lunch. YOu can speak with Purna Behera (+91 8908203839). He runs the resort.
Purna is a veteran birding guide, and he can make all arrangements for you. You will need to hire a boat etc..
Enjoy your birding at Mangalajodi.
