Excellent memorial to the cod fishing of the crews of Paimpol and Gravellines. On the construction of a hospital to treat injured fishermen and the terrible condition of all these men risking their lives to earn it.

The town was founded by French fishermen and for this reason the "French Quarter" is the characteristic that distinguishes the village of 670 inhabitants.

Amazing museum which tells the story of French schooner sailors who were based in Fáskrúðsfjörður many years ago. The best part is the realistic wax dolls which makes the experience very real, and and the tunnel under the street where a very real schooner has been made just as it was at that time.
When you come out of the tunnel, you arrive at the café and restaurant L'abri.
The museum is open from 15 May - 30 September or by agreement at other times of the year.

Le musée fait partie du Fosshôtel, installé dans l'ancien hôpital des marins français déplacé et restauré en ce lieu. Il propose différentes salles avec des personnages de cire et surtout la reconstitution de la cale d'une goélette qui donne bien une idée de la promiscuité et des terribles conditions de vie des pêcheurs d'Islande, partis de Paimpol ou de Gravelines. Dommage que la visite ne se fasse pas au son de "La Paimpolaise", dont les couplets prendraient ici tout leur sens !. Le plus émouvant est certainement le cimetière marin, à la sortie du village où 49 marins ont été ensevelis, une stèle porte leurs noms et celui du bateau auquel ils appartenaient, un drapeau tricolore flotte sur le site au milieu des lupins !

Es pequeño pero bien acondicionado y decorado, puedes ver la vida del hospital y la reproducción de un barco como vivían . Muy recomendable

nous n'avons pas visité le musée mais peut-être aussi émouvant le cimetière des marins français à la sortie du village. Une cinquantaine de marins y sont enterrés, tous les noms y sont gravés.

This museum is attached to the Fosshotel and is all related because the hotel itself is a historic French hospital that was restored and converted into a hotel. The upstairs of the museum had some artifacts and lifelike recreations but the downstairs stole the show with a recreation of a French fishing ship. Hard life it would have been!

Worth a visit, mandatory if you are guests of the Eastfjords Foss Hotel that guests the museum. Is devoted to french fishermen that sails from Brittany to fish cod in Iceland waters. Really nice and interesting.

We were recommended to this museum by an Icelander who grew up in this town. Turns out, the receptionist taking our entrance fee is the niece of the person who recommended this! I'm guessing these small towns have loads of relatives. Interestingly, the majority of this well-done museum is located in the tunnel underneath the road that connects the now Fosshotel (which has several buildings that face each other across the road). Also, typical of the Icelandic tradition that nothing gets wasted, these buildings were the original French hospital and French doctor's home and were moved and renovated at the 11th hour before they would have been beyond repair. The town also remains a sister city to the town in France where many of the French fisherman came from year after year. This hospital was significant to the Icelanders in the area since it also serviced the locals who had little to no access to medical treatment. The underground tunnel area of the museum was designed to simulate being on one of the fishing boats of this time period. Check out the incredibly teeny weeny size of the sleeping berths the men had onboard. However, since these men were paid by output and the individual fish they worked with counted, many men went for weeks/months on very little sleep so they could earn as much as possible. The best part of the museum was learning that the simulated waves on the walls have the names of many of the French sailors that died during these fishing expeditions scrolling within the waves. Look for them! BTW, this museum is free if you are staying at this hotel.

Realistic mannikans and set designs give this small museum a wonderful flavor. I have a better appreciation for what sailors, fisherman, and first people here went through.
