Interesting chambered cairn, just off the road from Cornaa to Glen Mona.
Loses a point because it is not well signposted. Look out for narrow path at a corner opposite a house.

One of the best of the ancient Celtic/Viking sites. Don't try to drive all the way up, but walk from the road. Good signage as are all the IOM memorials

This is a magnificent setting on the top of a hill surrounded by open countryside, just north of Glen Mona. On clear days, it has wonderful views across to the Lake District
The site dates from about 1800BC and was originally covered with earth. It is one of the largest and best preserved Neolithic Horned Barrow in Britain and definitely worth visiting.
There was a semi circular portal at the west end, with eight large stones. The two largest stones at the centre form an arch which gave entry into the five chambers beyond.
Beyond these was a burnt area where bodies may have been cremated before the ash was collected into pottery urns for burial. Round the edge are the outer kerb stones.
The site is signed off an unclassified road between Glen Mona and Cornaa, at a bend opposite a small house. The grid reference is SC 463892. There is a limited amount of parking here. A narrow and overgrown pathway leads up between hedgerows, leads to a track by a ruined tholtan. Ignore the gate and horse trough on the left and continue along the track keeping the field boundary to your left to the top of the field. A gate and stile lead to the cairn.
If the gate to the right is open, go through that and head up the side of the field to a ruined tholtan at the top of the field and then follow the instructions.

If only I could time travel. What was going through the mind of the builders 4000 years ago? Set on a gently sloping bucolic pasture, this site was obviously important millenia ago.
What you see is what was below a stone cairn set in place 2,000 BC. It is an easy 300M walk from a small country road. Well worth the trip just to seek solitude in the middle of the Isle of Man.

What was in the minds of the builders. This bucolic gentle hillside. I wish that more of their story could have been left behind. What you see is what was underneath a cairn of stones but obviously thought and care went into it.
If only time travel were available.
In the middle of no-where, just a 10 minute deviation from the main road. Thought provoking and interesting.

We saw this place on a map and decided to visit. What a great decision. It is an excavated Cairn. This is a shame as it must have been quite a site. There are numerous standing stones left and it is large. A place to visit and marvel.

Like many of the ancient monuments on the Isle of Man, Cashtal yn Ard is somewhat difficult to find. There are no sign posts until you are right on top of it and our Garmin GPS stubbornly refused to acknowledge its existence. Fortunately it does get picked up on Google Maps.
The drive becomes quite narrow along a single track road with minimal passing places. There is also only room for about one car to park by the gate.
Then there is a short walk of about 1/4 mile to the site.
We visited on a very wet day with gale force winds. Somehow this made the site all the more spectacular and atmospheric.

Cashtal yn Ard ist ein Kammergrab von ca. 2000 vor Christus. Der Grabhügel fehlt, wie bei den meisten Gräbern dieser Art, aber von den Steinen sind noch sehr viele erhalten, so dass man ein gutes Bild von der Anlage bekommt. Zudem ist die Lage wirklich schön. Wer sich gerne prähistorische Steinanlagen ansieht, der wird auf seine Kosten kommen.
Um Cashtal an Ard zu erreichen, gibt es eine Hilfe, die auf der Isle of Man alles andere als selbstverständlich ist: es gibt Schilder. Und zwar von der Hauptstraße in Glen Mona aus bis direkt vor den Fußweg zur Anlage, an jeder Abzweigung. Das war sehr hilfreich.
Allerdings führt diese gut ausgeschilderte Anreise über eine winzige Straße zwischen Hecken, die für ein großes Auto problematisch sein könnte, in jedem Fall aber gute Nerven vom Fahrer erfordert, weil sie auch sehr unübersichtlich ist.
Kommt man von Süden, muss man zudem über eine Furt. In einem so trockenen Sommer wie diesem war das kein Problem, es sollte aber vorher bedacht werden.
Auf der Nordseite wird die Straße dafür in einem Abschnitt extrem steil. Und es gibt keinerlei Parkplatz am Fußweg, nur einen lay by genau in der Kurve.
Nichts für ungeübte Autofahrer.

Easily accessible, although the path is through a field it is clearly marked and within a short 5 minutes walk you arrive at the gate (climb a few steps to the left) and you're there. Interesting stones and history, but only worthwhile visiting enroute to another attraction as we only spent about 10 minutes there. The photos put up by another reviewer say it all. We were lucky enough to visit on a sunny day - everything looks nicer in the sunshine! Google maps took us directly to the start of the walk, we parked on the road behind another car - a bit tight but fine.
Cashtal yn Ard, or the Castle of the Heights, is a well preserved chambered tomb situated on raised land overlooking the parish of Maughold.
The monument was originally a megalithic chambered cairn – a conical heap of stones built as a landmark – and could have been used as a communal burial place for Neolithic chieftans and their families.
Cashtal yn Ard dates back to around 2000 BC and although the stone cairn has been stripped away, the large firmly set stones create a dramatic burial site.

Due to my knee problems, we have to be able to get quite near any such sites to visit, and this one was difficult. By car, it's little single track roads, a ford, and hard to find even using the ordnance survey. Also requires a walk, so not good if you have restricted mobility. The stones are interesting, but I understand that the chambered tomb has been "stripped away", so you are left with the standing stones. I'd been spoiled by a visit to, and the sheer number of, such stones, cairns, etc., in Kilmartin Glen in Scotland, where many sites are all around you as you drive up the main road. If you like ancient monuments, it's worth a visit, but is quite small by comparison to the Scottish equivalents. You also need good weather!

Where do you park (Legally)? Worried about parking at the side of such narrow roads.
