‪A 45minute drive from Bucharest was Snagov Monastery, the island 'burial place' of Vlad Tepes, inspiration for Bram Stokers Dracula. We paid to get in, there are two prices, entry and entry where you can take photos, the difference being pennies but it amused me greatly for some reason.

You park a bit away from the island and cross a bridge to the monastery which takes you and go through someones house/farm to get here along with their four dogs, which certainly adds to the experience.

We were fortunate to have a private tour so got a lot of historical information although there is a little bit of written information inside to give you some history. The grounds although small are worth a little stroll around.

Is it worth the 45 minute from Bucharest, well yes if you have a car readily available or have this as part of a tour as we did.‬

‪Our family trip to Snagov Monastery was a peaceful and enriching experience. Nestled on an island in Lake Snagov, this historic site provided a unique blend of cultural heritage, scenic beauty, and tranquility. Here’s a detailed review of our visit:

Arrival and First Impressions:

The journey to Snagov Monastery was delightful, with a scenic drive through the Romanian countryside leading us to the lake. We took a short boat ride to the monastery, which was a charming start to our visit. The picturesque setting of the monastery on the island made for a memorable approach and set the tone for a serene exploration. 🚤🏞️

Exploring the Monastery:

1. Historical Significance:
The monastery is renowned for its historical and religious significance, particularly as the reputed burial place of Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula. The rich history of the site, dating back to the 14th century, was fascinating and added depth to our visit. The informative plaques and displays provided interesting insights into the monastery's past and its role in Romanian history. 📜

2. Architecture and Grounds:
The architecture of Snagov Monastery is impressive, with its traditional Romanian Orthodox design and well-preserved frescoes. The peaceful courtyard, surrounded by lush greenery and the calm waters of Lake Snagov, offered a perfect spot for reflection and relaxation. The monastery’s serene atmosphere was enhanced by the natural beauty of the surroundings. 🏛️🌿

3. The Church and Interior:
Inside the monastery, the church is adorned with beautiful frescoes and intricate woodwork. The interior is modest yet inviting, reflecting the spiritual essence of the place. We were struck by the peaceful ambiance and the well-maintained artifacts. It was a respectful environment that encouraged quiet contemplation. ⛪🌟

Family-Friendly Aspects:

1. Boat Ride:
The boat ride to the monastery was a highlight for our children. It was a fun and unique way to approach the site, and the views of the lake and surrounding landscape were stunning. The ride was smooth and provided a memorable start to our visit.

2. Educational Experience:
The historical and cultural aspects of Snagov Monastery were engaging for our family, offering both educational value and a glimpse into Romanian heritage. The children enjoyed learning about the history of Vlad the Impaler and the significance of the monastery.

3. Relaxing Environment:
The calm and scenic environment of the monastery provided a relaxing break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It was a peaceful place where we could enjoy nature and reflect on the history and culture of the region.

Dining and Amenities:

1. Dining Options:
While the monastery itself doesn’t have dining facilities, there are several small restaurants and cafes nearby where you can enjoy a meal before or after your visit. We found a charming spot near the lake with a lovely view and a menu of local dishes.

2. Facilities:
The monastery’s facilities are basic but adequate. There are restrooms available, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The site is well-maintained, and the surrounding area is clean and inviting.

Final Thoughts:

Visiting Snagov Monastery was a delightful experience for our family. The combination of historical intrigue, natural beauty, and tranquil atmosphere made for a memorable day out. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, Snagov Monastery offers a unique and enriching experience.

Overall Experience: Our visit to Snagov Monastery was both educational and relaxing. The serene setting and historical significance of the site provided a perfect blend of culture and nature, making it a great destination for a family outing. Highly recommended for those visiting Romania!‬

‪We spent too much time looking for the place, very remote and with no indications whatsoever. We arrive and there is a nice walk on a pedestrian bridge. Rite photo outside with the effigy of the impaler, and the moment we set foot in a beautiful Orthodox monastery all painted, an unpleasant man asks us 20 lei each. He wrote it in pen on the billboard in the lobby. Unbelievable. I wonder if the municipality is aware of these extortions‬

‪Just another church.
Nice wall paintings, and very small hall.
It will be worth visiting only if you are around otherwise, suggest to skip it.

Pay is 40 lei for entrance‬

‪The guide Narcis fulfilled our expectations. Great knowledge of the subject but also about the country tumultuous history. This tour was combined with Mogosoaia Palace. The pick up was on time and the guide was very helpful regarding our requests and questions. I would say it is worthy to spend a few hours out of Bucharest visiting those attractions.‬

‪Just visited since it was very close to our route.
Actually the small monastery is owned privately. The place where the monastery is located is on a small island on a lake.
So you pay 20 Lei/ per person for the entrance and 10Lei if you want to take pictures inside! No receipts, no papers, just you give for no document. What a trap!

Historically there is no full evidence that the body (not the head) is buried there. However it is said so…

Some paintings on the wall are not old, actually they are painted new and tried to look old!

Inside you can spend only 10 minutes but outside or at the lake side there is more better.‬

‪The Snagov Monastery, located about 40 km from Bucharest, on an island that is accessed by a Lara footbridge across the lake, a highly recommended visit dates back to 1830, they say it is the tomb of the Prince (known as Dracula) the monastery is well cared for For a family it charges 20 Ron per person and 10 if you want to take photos, it has some impressive frescoes, which represent the complete saints, we have gone with a guide from Bucharest, it is worth it.‬

‪Really nice monastery in an interesting location but will echo what others have said that there is a charge to enter (20 lei) also the day I went the monastery was advertised to close at 1pm but it closed around 12.30pm so do be careful as there were people arriving after me that didn’t get in. Also very remote so make sure you do it either with a tour or an Uber driver that will wait for the 20/30 mins it takes before taking you back to Bucharest if you’re coming from there‬

‪Tried to visit twice. 1st time closed at 11.30 am while everywhere is open until 1 pm. Tried again 2 days later. The parking lot was open (just like last time) with no one to be seen. Walked to monastery. Beautiful romantic road over the bridge. At the entrance there are 2 ladies who charge 40 lei for entrance. We had too little cash, it was not possible to pay by card. You were allowed to pay in euros. €20 while 40 lei is €8. Not done. Back at the car, barrier closed. Gypsy dressed as a priest who charges 20 lei for parking and makes a receipt on which you have to put your name and address. Like we're crazy henkie. Fake name and address given so that his friends are at a different house. Paid with a smile. If you get screwed, you better enjoy it. Very unfortunate because the other days in Bucharest and Romania were great‬

‪An aggressive lady prevented us accessing the Monastery unless we paid a fee.
Romanian visitors were not being charged, only foreigners. There was no entry fee advertised at the entrance and the lady didn't have any uniform or official badge.
One of our friends was of the Orthodox faith and insisted that we should never pay an entrance fee to enter a holy building, it is just not done - donations only.
Whether the charging lady was genuine or not - this still deserves a one star review.
If a tourist site wants to charge, do it properly - advertise the charge at the entrance and give staff uniforms/badges and charge all visitors equally regardless of nationality or race. If the lady was a scammer then it is shameful that she is allowed to get away with it at an important tourist site for Romania - no way to treat guests and it will discourage people visiting the country.‬
