One of the biggest and well-maintained Fort of South Interior Karnataka. Detailed history can be found on Google.
From outside, one cannot make out the size of the fortress, it is huge and need minimum 3-4 hours to cover all the historic and valuable spots. Most of it is preserved except the Royal Quarters which is in ruins and quite inaccessible.
If one is completely unaware of the background and history attached to the fort, govt. approved guides are available. We did not hire a guide as we wanted to explore at our own pace.
Personally, early mornings are the best time (fort opens at 6.00 AM), because one, there are no crowd and second, looks beautiful in morning sunlight. Avoid afternoons, especially in summer.
Entry Ticket is 25/- and can be booked only by scanning QR Code.
Needs lots of climbing stairs so wear proper shoes and senior citizens may find it difficult to climb (there are seating benches at the base). There is also no food or water option available inside, so carry along with it.
Please DO NOT litter the fort.
Saw water bottles and wrappers in now dried two lakes/ponds - Tangi Honda and Akka Honda

The guides at the gate are super nice, knowledgable but English is limited. I went with my husband who speaks Kannada and he translated for me. Definitely recommend a guide because it’s easy to get lost, plus they can point out a lot of things that might be missed.
Ticketing was a huge pain: have to use a QR code. If you’re foreign with limited cellular service, it might be a challenge and there is NO CASH option. If you have people who are Indian citizens and foreign (like my husband and I), you will have to do separate transactions. Wear proper shoes (like running shoes). The stairs are uneven height (some quite a step up), some of the stones are worn smooth, others are fairly craggy. Go early or in the late afternoon or you will cook in the sun. There is very little shade. As a person who is melanin-challenged (even though I tan easily), this was a concern. We had an abbreviated visit - 2 hours - and barely scratched the surface. This place is HUGE and definitely doesn’t get the attention it deserves. There were so many battles and “transfer of power” (read: conquerors) that took place, many examples of Indian engineering and brilliant creativity from so many centuries ago. Great stop if you’re visiting Hampi or worth a quick visit if you’re in Bengaluru or any other surrounding area in driving distance. @Government of Karnataka: This gem is a real opportunity for tourism, historical preservation and state pride!!!!

The entire fort complex is about 1300 acres and has 7 circles of fort walls enclosing it with over 36 watch towers and several secret passages too. The fort has been built with so much of thought to ensure enemy doesn't get easy entry - all the entrance are in zig zag fashions and the doors were so massive that elephants were used to open or one has to blast open the door with huge wooden blocks where hundreds of soliders will have run carrying the blocks to smash against the door to open. Hence the entire structure was built in such zig zag manner (like snake crawling zig zag fashion) that smashing the door is not possible at all because there is not enough space to run and smash the door!!
Even the steps to climb up and down have some depressions resembling horse shoe and when asked why they were there-- the guide explained those are for the horse to ensure they don't slip while going up or down the pathway -- what an fantastic thinking !!
The famour kannada movie "Nagarahaavu" was shot here. The fort became even more famous because of the Onke Obava .. brave lady who killed more than 40+ Hyder Ali's men when they tried to sneak into the fort through secret passage. Her husband (Sentry) was having food and when she went to fetch water for him from a pond nearby, she sees these guys sneaking into the fort. Since she didn't want to disturb her husband lunch, she took it on herself to defend, take the pounding stick or pestle (Onke in Kannada) and stands gaurd near the mouth of the small hole where the Hyder Ali's solidier were trying to sneak in. She used the Onake or pestle (a wooden long club meant for pounding paddy grains) to kill the soldiers one by one by hitting them on the head and then quietly moving the dead without raising the suspicions of the rest of the troops. Mudda Hanuma, Obavva's husband, returned from lunch, was shocked to see Obavva standing with a blood stained Onake and several of the enemies' dead bodies around her. Later, the same day, she was found dead either due to shock or having been killed by the enemy soldiers.
Booking is online except on Sat/Sun, when I heard they issue tickets. You just have to scan the QR code displayed near the entrance, enter required details including the id proof and then INR 20 is the ticket + tax. Show the generated ticket at the counter and enter. Plan for early morning or after 4pm. Fort is opened from 6am to 6pm. Parking is available.
There is a Mayura Durg KSTDC hotel just 100mts from the fort entrance for good breakfast/lunch etc. They have about 12-13 rooms in case you plan to book there.

We hired a state approved & certified guide by name Basavaraj. He explained in detail about the fort.
Fort itself is huge and would probably need a day or 2 to fully explore it. Overall, the fort was well maintained despite some tourists throwing plastic covers, food stuff, etc. Security was reasonably good.
Stones making the fort wall are tactfully cut using manual means and trimmed by the workmen back then. Fort walls are approximately 8~10 feet thick. Most of the fort remains was it was done originally. This fort called as the 'elu sutthina kote' (seven runged fort) in Kannada was built over 200 years by round 11 different kings. In certain places, walls are restored by the state govt. A message read that food & water inside the fort was so abundantly available that it could survive a blockade from outside for 12 years. There were connected ponds inside which made storage of rain water well, without flooding of the fort.
View of the city surrounding the fort was also beautiful. 'Obbavana kindi' for which this fort is well-known for the bravery of the lady of the guard who fought and killed 20~30 enemy soldiers of hyder ali single-handedly, was crowded but still intact. A must visit place. Try on a week day when crowd is less, for better tranquil atmosphere.

Must visit fort if you are a history lover. It is spread in huge areas so wear proper shoes.
Here a guide, there are so many stories that you get to hear. Everyone loved this one. While coming back from this place we had our breakfast at lakshmi tiffin centre as it was recommended to us by locals. The tiffin centre has awesome dosas.

The Fort name Chitrakaldurga means picturesque fort in the local language. With seven circles of fort enclosing several hills, water reservoirs, and ancient temples it is a beautiful sight to see. The oldest temple is the Hidimbeshwar temple from the legend of Mahabharata, where Bhim had a duel with the giant Hidimba. The present fort is the work of multiple dynasties spanning from the 11th to the 18th century. A visit of 3-6 hrs is recommended based on how much of the fort you plan to see.

THE 7 STRUCTURED FORT !!
A MASSIVE FORT WITH A VIBRANT STORY HIDDEN IN ITS BELLY.
Firstly, The amazing 11th century fort was very welcoming. Being a history lover, the full proof plan and the amazing structure put my chin down. The techniques used and followed those days to save their motherland was commendable. There is so much to learn from our ancestors.
To add thrill to my visit, the trek over hudure hejje was really adventurous and fun.
The place is quite clean and pleasant. Only at two places within you get some water supplies and snacks. Kothi Raja, the man behind the tourist attraction was also an add on to my visit, as I had a chance to talk to him for quite some time.
To conclude... The big boulders have weaved many a stories, we need a patient ear to hear.....

We (group of 5, with parents) left Bangalore at 8:30AM on a hired cab. Breakfast enroute around 9:30 AM. Got lunch (Upadhya veg, recommended as we couldn't find many great places in the town) before taking detour from the highway to the town. Fort is just 10min from the highway. Reached the fort post lunch at 1:00 pm. Hired a guide (400₹). Spend good 4:30 hrs including the climb to the top watch tower (weapons store).
Had an amazing and relaxing time with family. Left at 5:30 pm, reached Bangalore by 9:30pm.
Great drive and a great place. Will recommend and will go again.

It should not be. Lots of people visit the fort on national holidays as it is a tourist attraction.

Hi.. we are Senior Citizen keep visiting new places. Is it requires to climb large steps to reach the fort top or requires lot of walking. We are all crossed 60, 65 and some are in 70s. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance

Hi Sivam,
Yes it requires a lot of walking and climbing to be done if you want to cover the entire place. The area is vast. However; we had taken along our grandfather who is 80 plus and our grandmother who is about 70 years old. They were able to ascend and descent slowly and saw a few places if not all. It’s a very beautiful location. Must visit if u can. Book the KSTDC approved guest house close by. The rooms are neat, the view at night is amazing and some decent food as well.

Have been there twice (once alone and once with my family). A must for all going from Bangalore to Hampi (its about midway). Road from B'lore is great but the rest of the way to Hampi will slow you down (but it is not bad). The fort itself is an excellent place to visit. Does involve climbing some steps but the sights within are worth it. I'd recommend spending at least two hours.Take water if you visit in summer (there is a small shop Inside but it doen't sell much). No restaurant in Chitradurg, just shops selling biscuits, chips, cold drinks etc.

In my understanding, there are many good hotels and restaurants within 2 to 5 Km radius. I would also advice a visit to Laxmi tiffin house, which is walking distance- it is a pure south Indian joint, reasonably clean.
As a general note vegetarian restaurants and joints are generally cleaner and better- but they may not look so!!.

I am fascinated by such ancient places and would like to explore it a lot. But, I am a senior and would like to do it over two days. Are there different areas you can go tp from the main entrance, so you do not have to go back over the same route again if you go back on a second day???

Unfortunately there is only entrance. However one can do the tour of the left side of he entramce on day 1- the more interesting, comparatively better maintained and more visited than the other side. I went with my mother,a more enthusiastic soul than me. A way to not be exhausted is to visit the place at the earliest. Eaely morning makes it more comfortable and we can see more od the fort. Don't think twice before taking multiple short breaks. It's a place to breathe, stay and look around. Apart from the fort, the view of the large windmills and mountains around is also breath taking.
Happy visit.

Answers to the questions that I am aware of
2. There is a Mayura yatri Nivas almost opposite to the fort and that can be one option for food. It is walking distance from fort entrance and you can see this from the fort
4. Entry fee is Rs.5 for adults above 15 years ( I visited few months back and hopefully this has not changed)
5. Chandavalli garden is around 3-4 kms from from the fort.
