Prachtige Vishnu tempel. Woorden schieten tekort. Zo gedetailleerd! Het is niet op de foto vast te leggen. De mooiste tempel die ik ooit gezien heb. De tempel is gewijd aan VishnuWe kwamen vroeg bij de tempel.

The Chennakesava temple of Belur is one of the best preserved temples of the Hoysala dynasty of Karnataka. The Hoysalas were famed for the creation of intricately carved temples during their reign and the Chennakesava temple along with the Hoysaleshwara temple of Halebeedu mark the epitomy of their skills in this area. The temple itself is a living temple which means that the deity has not been destroyed by any invaders and therefore is worshipped as per Hindu traditions to this date. It is a well preserved temple and is a must visit for every history and architecture lover. Pure poetry in stone. The temple is well maintained and guides are available at the entrance of the monument. Definitely engage a guide as it will enhance the experience a thousandfold. The guide will walk you through all the main sculptures and architectural details including the famed statue of Shantala Devi, the beautiful queen of King Vishnuvardana, the most famous of the Hoysala rulers who commissioned this temple. Definitely stay until dusk (7:00PM) when the temple closes as the changing light illustrates the full glory of the monument. The legend of Shantala Devi, of the great scupltor Jakanna all come to life as the crowds dwindle and the light starts fading.

This is one of most beautiful temples of southern India untouched by the destruction of foreign invaders. The carvings are so intrcate and mesmerizing that one wonders whether they are made by the hands of God itself. It is a living proof that our ancestors were better at many arts and engineering than today. A must visit to get in touch with our history. Ancients will rise again..

We visited the temple while travelling to Chikamagalur and was worth it. Wide spread temple complete with Magnificent Architecture. We also saw a pool full of tortoise in the temple complex.

Templo de gran tamaño construido por la dinastía Hoysala. Gran templo en que que destacan la exquisitez de los trabajos de escultura. Muy bonito

The Belur Chennakeshava temple in one of the most magnificent temple in all of India.
The Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana started the construction of this temple and it took more than a hundred years to complete its construction.
There are many temples in the belur temple complex but I will be only writing about two: The Chennakeshava and the Chennigaraya temple.
Chennakeshava Temple(Main temple):
The Chennakeshava temple can be seen straight ahead when ome enters the temple's main gate. The temple has one the most detailed stone carvings I have ever seen. They have taken to account all the precise details in the carvings, so precise that they even carved a house fly. To look at all the carving and understand their story it will take more than a month. The interior of the temple is also adorned with pillars with exquisite carvings.
Exam Ganesha: On the outside of the Chennakeshava temple is a Ganesha diety and the locals kids visit it to pray that they pass and get good marks in their examinations.
Chennigaraya temple: This temple is said to be built as a model before building the original temple(Thats a lot of dedication). The temple is not as magnificent as the Chennakeshava temple, but still on another level. The temple has two dieties and there is a story rearding the construction of one of the diety(story can be found on google).
Gravity pillar: A tall pillar can be seen when one enters the temple's. The pillar has no foundations and is standing only on 3 sides for over thousand years. One of its side is open a paper can be slid through it(Not allowed now).
There is so much more in the temple complex to see and look at. I suggest hiring a guide to understand the temple and its architecture in detail and spend atleast half a day visiting this temple.

Beautiful temple with some of the most intricate and stunning architecture you will ever find. Took the help of a guide who explained well the various aspects of this temple, it’s history (built over three generations of Hoysala kings), architectural marvel - modular idols that were carved separately and attached to the temple - and of course, the main deity Chennakesava or beautiful Krishna. Amazing to see this 900 year old temple still standing as a testimony to the sculpting skills of this country. Must visit.

Worth spending more than two hours gazing at the beautiful carvings and figurines but best to visit early morning or evening due to heat.

main entrance has steps inside there is huge space there is a help desk at entrance, I guess they would be able to help

The temple is open on all days from 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM. I went there around 4:30 PM

Hi I am planning to visit this temple by November and will be be coming from Mysore and will have to visit chickmagalur after visiting this temple.
Can anyone suggest which one to visit first Mysore? Also I would love to visit Chennakesava temple first and then to chickmagalur.
What are the place to visit in Chickmagalur, please suggest.

You can visit Chennakesava Temple at Beluru on your way to Chickamagaluru from Mysore. You need to travel from Mysore to Hassan then Beluru to reach Chickamagaluru. Chennakesava Temple is located in Beluru Town, 2 kms from the main road junction.
In Chickamagaluru you can visit Baba Budangiri, Mulayangiri, Kemmangundi if you are interested in trekking. You can visit Sringeri, Horanadu, Kalasha if you are interested in seeing Hindu holy places and temples. You will pass through Kudremukha National Park if you plan to visit these holy places. You can stay in resorts/home stays in the coffee estates of Chickamagaluru to enjoy the estates.
