‪This temple at Bellur is one of the highlights of the Hoysala architecture and is a must visit. The scale and the grandeur of the place is simply breathtaking.

Though this is my second visit, the elaborate carvings and the amazing story telling on the panels, kept me riveted the whole time. Some of these carving are exceptionally detailed and full of symbolisms that may not be obvious to a casual viewer, so it's best that you get a guide along.

Early mornings would be lesser crowded, and as the day progresses, it progressively gets difficult walking bare foot inside the complex. So it's good to get an early start. We spent a good 2 hours plus here.‬

‪While coming back from Nirvara Plantation Stay in Sakleshpur, our first pit stop was at Belur. Belur was a one hour drive from our stay, while it could be a four drive from Bengaluru. You can make it a one day trip although it would be a tiring one to travel from Bengaluru to Belur and finish everything in a single day.

The Chennakesava Temple in Belur was built in the 12th century and it still holds great significance to many. The temple was not very crowded on a Monday and we were able to take our own sweet time exploring the architectural marvel. One does not have to pay any entry fee to visit the place, there is ample parking available, and the timings are from 7 A.M to 8 P.M. There are quite a few guides available in the premises and it is advisable to use their services to get a better understanding of the temple and it's glorious history.

The Hoysala dynasty have left behind some of the most beautiful architectural beauties in Karnataka and this is one of those places you should surely visit.‬

‪A gem of Indian architecture. The temple has immense historical significance. It is a complex with multiple temples. The design of each temple is remarkable.‬

‪Beautiful Hoysala temple but overrrrun with people during the pandemic.
No masks, people crowding next to each other.

This is an active religious space.
I find the Halebeedu temples much more soulful and appealing compared to this one.
Architecturally also, Halebeedu temples felt a lot richer.

Skippable if you are doing the other temples.‬

‪This temple, a shining example of the Hoysala dynasty architecture and also, Indian architecture, is about four hours drive from Bengaluru. It is a must visit monument for history and architecture enthusiasts, and even for general public who should not miss this gem of a temple, adorned with sculptures that took 103 years to finish. The temple is remarkable for its architecture, sculptures, reliefs, friezes, as well as its iconography, inscriptions and history. One feels proud to see the craft and diligence of our ancestors and this is a place where history can be seen with one's own eyes!‬

‪Read about the temple and the Hoysalas in our history books, this temple is an architectural marvel. Built somewhere in the 12th century this is a prime attraction for the tourists here. There are many monolithic structures here and it is a treat to your eyes. The detailing provided in these structures through manual carvings are unbelievable. The carvings are even better than the ones you find in Hampi. A photographers paradise. This is a must visit place and would surely recommend. There is ample parking space and entry is free.‬

‪If you're in/near Chikmaglur, you must visit - Chennakesava temple in Belur, Hoyasala temples in Halebidu and Veeranarayanaswamy temple in Belavadi. All 3 are reasonably close and you can reach each in about 20-20 minutes from the other. It takes around 1 hour to do a quick round with a guide. I would strongly suggest a guide - Belur and Halebidu have that option.

Please treat these temples with respect and don't litter and try photo shoots for Instagram etc. Give it the respect it deserves.

Also, fair bit of walking is involved - so be prepared. In Belur, shoes are NOT allowed inside the temple - in Halebidu it is allowed and in Belavadi again shoes are not allowed.‬

‪Situated on the Bangalore Chickmagalur highway, a distance of about 30 kms from
Chickmagalur town, Chennakeasava Temple is a 12th century temple with wonderful and well maintained architecture. Take time to admire carvings and the history behind them. The temple took 103 years to build, but bad behaviour of some visitors is destroying the statues due to insensitive actions. Respect our history and respect our architecture.

Side note, this is where Rajinikanth shot for his famous Arunachalam title song. ‬
