Beautiful old church with a very "alive" feel to it. Fabulous "St Francis of Assisi Preaching to the Birds and Fishes" stained glass window and beautiful tapestry kneelers

We dropped in on a whim. The church was closed but the churchyard has some historic interest with Siegfried Sasson, Ronald Knox and some members of the Bonham Carter family buried there.

A Lovely, Historic Small Church in Frome
A year before, we had visited Somerset for the first time. A friend lives in Frome, and we visited a mutual friend, who was not doing well, health wise. This September, we were back, but for several memorials, for that mutual friend.
While the main memorial was held in Nunney, a smaller one was held in Frome, at the St Andrews Church. At first, I though how odd, to have memorials at churches of different faiths, though not that far apart, until I learned that he had been active in several churches. Having spent much of his lifetime on the London stage, when he moved to Somerset, he became active in many productions, as a director, and especially around the Holidays. While maybe not a congregational member, he was active in the religious community, for several denominations.
This church is small, and intimate, unlike say Wells Cathedral, which we also visited, but therein lies its beauty - small, and very welcoming.
The service was short, and we got to explore a bit, and I realized that several structures on the grounds were ruins. I had missed that, on my first visit. While some parts were no longer complete, the chapel was, and very nice, though more austere, than many churches in Europe and in England.
We spent time on the grounds, as well as in the chapel, and enjoyed every minute - just a lovely little church.
While we spent well over an hour, we had a service to attend, so I would suggest 45-60 minutes, to take it in, unless one wanted to photograph the exterior, and then, 90 minutes should be adequate. In the Frome Area, this is a must-do, must-see, and you will be rewarded.
Much of the “beauty” of this church, is its history, as articulated by the museum curator – and our “tour guide.” She spent time showing us the tombs of several famous parishioners, buried within and around the church.
We probably spent a bit less time, than we could have, but then our friend had a very busy schedule for us, over the next three days, so we departed, heading to another famous church, Wells Cathedral.

A decent-sized, very old village church and garden/graveyard lovingly tended. Inside is art as well as the religious requirements, with a strong flavor of soldiers killed in WW1. My wife loved the tree whose branches and leaves create a natural cottage!

I, and my friends, came all the way from Scotalnd to this lovely little kirk tucked away up a side street in the hamlet of Mells for a concert by a fine local singer songwriter Jane Taylor. It was a beautiful setting for such an event. Small and very intimate, with fabulous acoustics.
Not withstanding our reason for being there it has a long and interesting history and most certainly worth a visit..

During our September visit to London, a good friend, and board member, picked us up, and took us touring “her England,” out into Somerset. One of the first day’s visits was to Frome, and while there, a visit to St Andrew’s Church, in Mells. While this had been recommended by the curator at the Frome Museum, our hostess had already worked this stop into our itinerary.
This is a lovely, unassuming structure – even less imposing, than the All Saints Church in Nunney, which we had visited that morning. I visit many churches with my wife, who is Roman Catholic, so have seen dozens, around the world. For the second time this morning, I was in a far, far less ornate church – “modest” would be my first descriptor.
The exterior architecture is lovely, but the interior is a juxtaposition, in that it is sparse, with out the ornamentation, which I have come to expect. I was getting a new prospective on churches, and especially those in the English countryside. The nave and alter were lovely, and illuminated by a beautiful stained glass window, but the interior was quite simple, without the gilt, and intricate detail, which I have seen elsewhere.
Much of the “beauty” of this church, is its history, as articulated by the museum curator – and our “tour guide.” She spent time showing us the tombs of several famous parishioners, buried within and around the church.

Frome Museum curator recommended the church and told us about 'Jack' Horner, Seigfried Sassoon, etc. Had a interesting time looking around the graveyard and church.

Nice look around.
Siegfried Sassoon WW1 poet is buried here.
Then visit The Talbot Inn for really good food.
