With our English Heritage membership we enjoyed exploring the castle as a family and were there about 90 minutes. It's quite hilly but the kids loved it. Fun videos and projected images on the castle walls explained the history of who lived there, along with display boards.
There are a few picnic spots if you visit in the nicer weather and a small shop but not much if you visit during the colder months.
Parking can be tricky and we drove round for quite a while before deciding where best to park. Street parking is available for free and there is a pay & display car park at the bottom of the hill (which we didn't use as I'll be honest, I had a gut feeling about the payment system being dodgy so decided to avoid it (I'm 5ft 6in and when you literally have to jump up high several times to scan the QR code and no- one else is parked there despite the castle being busy, then your bank contacts you to ask if you're trying to make a payment, my red flags were flying high so I chose to avoid it).
Despite the parking though it was a nice little place and we learnt a bit more about some of the history.

Came here last week with my Daughter, very disappointed,
The car park at the bottom of the road is pay online or app, this took nearly 20 mins to do as the website didn't allow the data input and I was forced to install the app just to pay for parking,
We then walked up the road and on the very small entrance was a huge puddle you couldn't avoid, not great, then you walk up two lots of steps before the main entrance, again a huge puddle deeper than your foot which you couldn't avoid! why are these things not being levelled off/ addressed during the summer?? what does my English heritage membership pay for??
Your then in and out in less than 20 mins, you walk into the gift shop only to be show the most expensive gifts you could imagine! such a rip off/ £3.50 for a wooden ruler? I can get one hand delivered to my home address for half that! a cheap wooden build set for £25! what the hell???? even my daughter said I'm not paying that much!
I am seriously thinking of cancelling my membership as clearly someone at the top of the tree must be filtering all this money off as it sure isn't paying for the upkeep of these places! I wont be going back!

We visited here in July, after coming back from a night stay in Doncaster, & decided to visit a few English Heritage sites within close proximity, this being one of them.
There was no wait at all, & it was made smooth by being members. The castle is beautiful, & grand in style. Inside there is a chance to explore various rooms, getting the experience of what it may of been like all them years ago.

A real genuine castle where you can walk to the top for amazing views . Not great if you have a physical disability but fun for children . Lots of hills and narrow paths but this is Yorkshire after all ! There is a small visitor center with toilets and parking nearby . The church in the village is also one of the oldest buildings in South Yorkshire .
Take a picnic as not much available locally apart from the crusty cob bakery in the village or the chip shop . MacD is a 5 min drive or for a higher level of eating there is the pastures lodge or the Boat inn

Took the kids out to go around the castle as eldest went on a school trip here years ago. They loved it, great day out

We enjoyed our visit to this prominent landmark with a well preserved keep. The information panels which illustrate life in the castle make a refreshing change from other historical sites as they are in a colourful comic book style, informative and engaging but with pleasing touches of humour as well. The staff in the Visitor's Centre, especially Mark, were knowledgeable and friendly, happy to provide more information about the high standard of construction of the keep. Superb stonework and craftsmanship can be seen everywhere, for example in the great chamber and the bedchamber with the details around the fireplace and intricate carvings in the private chapel. The great tower looks amazingly pristine, thanks to the characteristics and durability of the magnesian limestone faced in ashlar of fine quality.

English Heritage site. Conisborough Castle offers fabulous views from the top, loads of information boards & a shop. Parking available in nearby streets. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

A very good English Heritage site. Easy access to the castle. Stairs to the main building. Very helpful staff. Well maintained and plenty of interest for our small grandchildren. Great views from the top of the tower.

Visit of Conisbrough Castle was a bit tough check of my knee pain. But climbing those steep stairs up was worth doing as the view to the countryside is excellent. And there are many information tables around describing its history from the time when it was built in 12 century as well as great exhibition at the visitor centre.
We visited it with our friends from New Zealand who have been able to use their Heritage New Zealand card for free entry, we did use our English Heritage membership card so we both had free entry. Otherwise the entry fee is £7.70 per adult. We parked at Castle Hill street for free (its in the bend for about 3 cars) and there was a gate in the wall to enter in the area - which I assume is open 24/7. The area of the castle itself has gate which close at 5pm.

You'll have to find on street parking somewhere for this site, nothing immediately near.
The castle is picture perfect. From the visitor centre the castle on the mound with the slightly broken walls and the keep looming above its the ideal castle image. Inside, yes the concrete steps to enter the keep are a little incongruous, and the keep is obviously restored but it didn't significantly detract from the overall impression. Pleasant fun audio visual presentations in each room on each floor in-side the keep and excellent views from the top.

The wider grounds are free and open...but the complex has an entrance fee. Check the website.

Is there a cafe?

There is no official cafe as that was got rid of during the improvements...however there is 'Mollys at Chimes' which is a 2 mins walk away, opposite the church in the village centre.
Can dogs go in and up to the top?

Hi Sophie dogs are allowed in the grounds only, and must be kept on a lead. The stairs up to the top of the castle are very narrow and steep.
