This is a small archive attached to the Loughton branch library on Traps Hill. It is definitely only for those with a deep interest and passion for jazz, but is a remarkable treasure for fanatics.

This is an invaluable resource for jazz (as opposed to the 21st diaspora) music and it's fans. A great place to lose yourself for a few hours, especially if you need to undertake research on the subject, as I do and have. The curator, David Nathan, is enthusiastic, genial and very helpful, and it is the sort of center we are lucky have in this era of council cuts and philistinic cultural vision. It should be used and appreciated and donated to, just in case this government's 'improvements' and 'efficiency savings' are directed Loughton's way. You never properly appreciate things till they've gone, as they say.
I only have two caveats - as someone else has commented, you can't withdraw items (which I understand, but still...), and the archive is not especially great with regards to the avant-garde or post-Coltrane modernism. I suspect that the hearts of it's founders and operatives are firmly in the ranks of the traditionalist New Orleans/ 'Jazz Age'/ Swing/ Bop + Hard Bop/ Cool schools, which is fine, but the music (many proponents of which feel that 'jazz' is itself and outdated and even faintly racist term) is still developing in it's usual polymorphous way, and we don't want it becoming a museum. At least I don't.
Otherwise, great stuff, and let's hope David and the archivists continue their great work.

In regards to borrowing, the physical Archive based at Loughton library is a reference collection. Many of the books we hold are out-of-print but by being lodged at the Archive they are available for all visiting researchers to refer to whenever they visit.
You might like to look at our website http://archive.nationaljazzarchive.co.uk for additional information on more contemporary artists. However, we continue to collect on all forms of jazz and welcome any donations from supporters on avant-garde and modern jazz when we receive them.

Pop into the jazz archive and you may be surprised to find that you are nor the only jazz fan around. Reams of photos and books to look at. You could spend hours and hours browsing but instead spend time chatting to the affable David Nathan. You can also find out about the concerts and lectures they put on. It costs nothing to visit so why not pop in and take a break from the delights of Loughton

Enthusiastic staff. Loads of information and material. Only problem, you can't borrow anything - even the music books. Difficult to practice if you're not at home.
