‪Lovely countryside and enthusiastic group‬
الأصدقاء • أغسطس 2021
‪Explored this canal both by foot and on the narrow boat belonging to the group that is gradually restoring the canal. Most of the canal is navigable, just a couple of miles still left to clear but the derelict locks cost hundreds of thousands to repair. For a voluntary group to take this on and achieve so much is amazing and I wish them luck.‬

‪An enjoyable walk‬
يوليو 2020
‪We visited the partially restored canal head for the 2nd time in as many weeks in order to walk the 4.5 miles along the towpath alongside the Pocklington Canal from Top Lock to Melbourne and back.

At the canal head there are 2 small car parking areas and also grass verges to park on. There are also benches and picnic tables to sit on/at overlooking the canal. There is also an amazing horse sculpture and a couple of other sculptures. There are information boards relating to history of the lock and the canal too.

We enjoyed our walk to Melbourne passing 7 locks altogether and several bridges. Most of the locks are in dire need of renovation. There are lots of wild flowers and birds along the route. There are also lots of pretty yellow water lilies. When you get to Melbourne there is a small area of moored canal boats where in normal years, at weekends and bank holidays they do canal trips in the opposite direction towards Cottingwith. You can also walk the 5 miles to Cottingwith.

We ate our picnic on a bench overlooking the lock and then walked back.

There is one area at Bielby where you can cross over and walk on the opposite side of the canal for about a mile. There is a wooded area and also a memorial to an RAF Bristol Beaufighter MK1F that crashed in 1942. Don’t miss the amazingly beautiful mill house at Bielby arm (dating from when it was a working canal) before re-joining the towpath. You carry on walking alongside the canal and fields until the next bridge before crossing the canal once more to re-join the original path.

We enjoyed the walk – at least it didn’t rain. It was relatively quiet in the morning apart from dog walkers but much busier on our return journey in the afternoon. My husband thought the walk was a bit boring! We had hoped to see a kingfisher but did not!‬

‪Fab canal walk‬
زوجان • أغسطس 2020
‪A bit tricky to found due to lack of signs. Main entrance is on York Road. This is start of the canal. There is free parking available here and you can pick up a well informed map. The walk along the canal is easy and flat and the dogs loved it. A lot of it is still in need of repair and there are signs along the route informing about the history of the site. ‬

‪Waste of time at the moment ‬

‪Hopefully they can restore this but we were distinctly underwhelmed by this. At the Pocklington end it’s all overgrown and a long time since any boats went down there with barely any water visible. At Melbourne the pub is nowhere near the canal (from the information we read beforehand we thought it was on the waterway, maybe our bad but it was certainly implied it was)
When it’s been restored and there’s some boats on it then it might be worth the trip but we definitely felt like a morning wasted. ‬

‪Lovely hidden gem‬

‪Went with my partner and our pet dog, he absolutely loved it. It does make a change to be able to go somewhere and park safely on the road (near Melbourne Arms) and having a quiet, peaceful walk. Recommended ****‬

‪Lovely Picnic Site!‬
يوليو 2020
‪We visited the partially restored canal head for the first time after visiting the nearby Burnby Hall Gardens. We brought our picnic. There are 2 small car parking areas and also grass verges to park on. There were lots of cars parked but not many people around. Perhaps they were walking the 4.5 miles along the towpath from Top Lock?

There were lots of benches to sit on overlooking the canal and also picnic tables on the grass so a perfect site for a picnic. There is also an amazing horse sculpture. There are information boards dotted about relating to history of the lock and the canal.

There is a beautiful house adjacent to the water which is a converted warehouse originating from when it was a working canal.
Don’t miss the memorial stone to the crew of a Lancaster bomber who lost their lives when it crashed on the site in 1943.

We will definitely return to do the towpath walk in the near future. There are lots of bridges and locks and permanent moorings to view along the route.‬

‪Hidden Gem in the Yorkshire Wolds‬

‪A (mostly) disused canal stretching about 9.5 mies between Picklington and Melbourne. A glorious stretch of canal being slowly restored by the Canal and River & River Trust and what a great job they are doing. The walk was gorgeous, beautiful countryside; very peaceful. You can walk as far as you like and take in the lovely surroundings and walk back; starting at Melbourne or Pocklington. We saw the first snowdrops of the year and will be back in Spring to see the landscape coming back to life! Loved it for a local day out.‬

‪Great walking day out‬

‪A partly restored but still wild stretch of a quite obscure canal. We did the circular walk. Down one side, along the arm and back up the other. Never boring. Always something to see such as old locks and bridges and lots of places for a pucnic. The free map is well produced and very informative. Keep up the good work, Pocklington Canal Amenity Society!‬
