We were on our way back from Hastings and came across the castle on our way home. We decided to pop in as thought it would be good for my son.
On our arrival and attempting to purchase tickets we were told the castle was closed and that tickets were half price. But disappointing as there were no signs to say this.
We decided to pay and walk around the castle only to find half of the path had been closed off.
Not a lot open apart from the gift shop and cafe. To be fair the cafe was lovely and the staff were really friendly.
Overall for £11 we were left very disappointed and as we aren’t local it’s not like we can pop back at a later date.

Great example of what you would call an English Castle. Being able to climb the turret stairs to the roof was very interesting if even my legs did wobble!
Went on winters day so didn't explore the area around the castle but it looked like it would be good.
Castle itself was good and youngish kids would love it

Love walking around the castle, enjoy watching ducks and birds running around too. The castle itself is not so big but still interesting.

Absolutely beautiful, very atmospheric. The only problem was that they close the actual castle at 3, and the grounds at 4 - we got there at 3:05

The last time I went here entry was free but going in the castle required payment which was completely reasonable. Now you have to pay over 30 pounds just for you and your family to look at the castle from the outside although it's still advertised that you do not need to pay to walk around outside on their website. We drove all the way from Bedfordshire to walk around outside the castle for free just like advertised online but nowadays the greedy national trust charge you for everything to do with the castle. these things include Parking, Going to areas outside the castle, Doing simple 5-minute activities, Going to certain areas in the castle, And even just looking at the castle from outside. And the prices for bringing children are insane 30 pounds entry fee for a family of 4 and even more money the more people are in your family it really separates the rich from the poor and deprives the ordinary citizen of their heritage for money would not recommend.

This castle is over 600 years old, but very well preserved. Interesting history lesson with lots of information provided inside. You can also watch short documentary films about the castle in the small museum nearby.
The access to the grounds around the castle and museum is free. You have to pay to get inside the castle.
You can climb up the towers. It’s a killer workout for the legs but view from the top is worth it.

This ruined castle looks a little like the ones you see in children’s fairy-tale books. In the small nearby information pavilion, it states the castle was built more for show than defense. Although there is a wide moat surrounding the castle, two sides of the moat are built up artificial banks, any attacking force could easily drain the moat by digging into the banks. We thought the castle would be worth a return visit.

Bodiam castle was erected by lord Edward Dallingridge from 1385 onward with the spoils of his raiding campaigns in France (during the Hundred Years War). By 1475 the fortress was already a second seat at best for the Lewknor family who inherited it.
In 1645 Nathaniel Powel of Ewhurst purchased the Bodiam estate as a pure commercial asset.

Visitors can discover Bodiam castle with the help of guided tours by volunteer guides such as the entertaining Phil and the informative Peter. A guide book can also be purchased but it offers rather limited added value.
The problem is that no building accounts or other records of Bodiam castle survive, leaving us to speculate about the use of the north and west range and the rooms in the towers. Only the layout of the east range (parlour, appartments of the lord and chapel) and the south range (kitchen, screens passage, great hall) can be clearly distinguished.
The interior of some towers is accessible and part of the curtain wall and some tower platforms can be scaled for sweeping views of the castle and the surrounding area.
Apart from the barbican (an advanced fortification in front of the main entrance) the exterior of Bodiam castle is well preserved and highly picturesque. Don't forget to bring your camera !

Absolutely gorgeous castle but you can only really spend 30-60 mins there which means cost of entrance is very expensive. The Sussex Border path goes right through the grounds (there are waymarkers) and it's a free, public right of way so you don't need to pay an entrance fee to use that path. From the car park - go through the gate (ignoring the signs about tickets) and go straight on and then the path splits and you should take path off to your left which is the Sussex border path. Lots of locals were using it to walk their dogs and it's within the grounds so you can see the castle.

Are the Castle grounds worth a visit? Was wondering how large The grounds are, Are there any gardens or forest areas that could keep our toddler busy for at least a couple hours and worth an our and half drive?
Ivor M
لندن, UK545 مساهمة
I would also tend to say no. The best thing about the gardens is the view of the castle. Not much else to note. In my view this is not a place to travel to unless you can enter the castle which is worth a visit when it re-opens.

Does anyone know if I can gain access to take a picture of the front of the castle whilst the site is closed?
Kind Regards

When we went before, there used to be transport (I think a horse and buggy?) between the station and the castle, but apparently this has stopped. As we will have small children (2&4) in tow this time, does anyone know of any other way of getting between these two locations? I don't even remember if taxis are available, it was a long time ago!

On the grounds is on-lead only, but there is plenty of good tracks and bins for well, waste.. As for inside, as stated a, a tether point is outside of the actual castle.

You need to check with the National Trust - think how embarrassing it could be if you just turned up!
I guess it also depends on exactly how and where you wish to do this and wheter you are an amateur or a professional photographer....

Do I need to pay a fee to take my wedding photos? Or we just pay the tickets?
Maureen H

If it is after 5, the site is closed to visitors but they may do a special price for you to just go up to take photos. It seems a perfect spot - I'm sure others have done the same.
There is a link on he website for weddings at Bodiam Castle. Have a look there for information.
