Excellent day out! There was a 1970's theme to celebrate 50 years and it was fantastic. I am so glad that we got a National Trust membership!

We visited on their anniversary. Lovely welcome from the staff. Lots of games, and extra activities in the garden. We didn’t see the grandson for 2 sets of half an hour as he was enjoying the drumming. The museum is amazing, so much to see and do and who knew that being sent up a chimney could be so much fun! We had to go back in again for that later. The main house is also very interesting and the rocking chairs in the garden were a great hit. All in all a great day out and a bonus of lovely weather too.

We spent a wonderful few hours here as a family. Getting into the main house this time was awesome.
This NT site isn't one for the outdoor walkers. But ideal for a few hours with the family.
We'll likely be back.

Great place to spend a few hours with plenty to keep both children and adults engrossed. The children’s museum itself was very informative and brought back memories of our own childhood.

Thought we would come for a day out but the museum can be done within an hour. As for parking if you are disabled please be aware you can’t park on the site which I found having 3 disabled people in the party quite terrible. There is a small golf buggy time affair that can collect you from the car park to take you to the house but you have to call a mobile number that no one wants to seem to answer and there is only room for a couple of people and a wheelchair. Not great in this day and age. The children’s house cafe again not great. Over priced average food. No menus on the tables glad it wasn’t raining as the que was out of the door. I live quite local but if I was coming from any distance to visit I’d be very disappointed

Great day out with my son, we had free tickets out of the newspaper - bonus!
It had been on my list of places to visit for a while, I hadn't visited since being a child.
We had such fun, and really enjoyed the escape room type game.
There is a cafe on site, but quite expensive but food and coffee both nice.
Would recommend.

As a national trust member, this is one of the best if you have smaller children. I had to laugh at some of the reviews who state this has been dumbed down for kids. It's a childhood museum! And there are plenty of other National Trust gardens and old halls if that's what floats your boat! The staff are so lovely, they have themed days, crafts (at £2 extra per child) colouring, play park and the old house has so many interactive elements. It's well worth the visit, I've been to lots of NT and we're lucky to have this 25min drive away.

This is a top National Trust day out for families. My daughter and I recently visited and had a lovely day visiting the house and museum. The house successfully combines history with childhood and there is plenty to look at, and for the children to play with. The library with the origami is something else - really beautiful and a must-see. Each room has something to engage young and older children, plus plenty for the adults to look at.
The attached Museum of Childhood is also very interesting and well-worth spending time in. Highlights for us were pretending to be chimney sweeps by climbing up the chimney and out the other side, and attending Victorian School. The museum takes you on a journey of childhood from pre-Victorian to modern day. Remember to look up in the second room to spot your childhood bedroom! Just like the main house, there is plenty to keep children entertained in each section of the museum. Parents will have a great time reminiscing and telling their children all about the memories it provokes.
The gardens are full of outdoor toys to help kids burn off steam. There were under-cover areas to allow you to enjoy a picnic in inclement weather, and plenty of picnic benches to accommodate everyone who was there.
Will definitely return for another visit.

If you go to entertain the children I'd give it 5 stars, if you can to see the house and museum a 1, so I split the difference and gave it a 3. It's a different place to the average National Trust property and definitely geared to children. It gets points for different, with perhaps some deductions for trying too hard.
The museum lacks any real coherence and there are too many children's activities dotted throughout to enable the visitor to say anything but "I used to have one of those". So you don't really get to learn anything. It might be better to group all the activities together but I accept that might not work either.
The Hall has also been dumbed down for kids and really you learn nothing about the hall or the family. This is a pity as there is obviously an interesting history to be heard. When you arrive at the hall you have to wait in groups for an initial five minute briefing which we thought would introduce the hall and the family. However, all it comprises are statements about don't touch anything with a hedgehog on it as it is delicate and do sit on or use anything that is blue (which is a good idea). It's then followed by a weird projected video onto the ceiling which tells you nothing and seems to comprise a random kaleidoscope of kids and parts of the hall.
The rest of the hall is again aimed at kids.
So if you want a normal National trust experience don't bother. If you want to entertain the kids, I'd recommend it and somewhere we'd take the granddaughter when she is older.
I guess the National Trust have enough properties where they can experiment and do something a bit different but equally I thing with a bit more imagination it could be better for visitors of all ages. That said it is extremely popular.

Been here many times over the years and again today Tuesday 4th April 2023 qith wife, one of our daughters and 4 grandsons aged 10, 8, 6, 10months. first of all we went tin the cafe for drinks, toast, scones, cookies which was nice, pricey and we did complain that the coffees were luke warm and were quickly replaced. we enjoyed the museum visit, brought back lots of memories of our childhood. The boys enjoyed the climb through the chimney and the school lesson. Lovely grounds with play areas for the boys. Plenty of free parking with a 10 minute walk to the house. Returning to the car i used the complimentary shuttle bus as i suffer with mobility and my legs had had it. Staff were very customer focussed and a credit to the National trust to which we are members and have been for about 30years

Good evening, i have a complete edition of Arthur Mee's Children's Encyclopedia in good condition. I would like to donate it to a 'good home' and wonder if you would be interested in taking it for your shelves of children's books. I walk in Derbyshire quite regularly and am happy to deliver it on one of my journeys if you would like it.
I look forward to hearing from you. If you don't want it, then it would be good if you could suggest somewhere who would like these books. Thanks for your consideration
Yours, John Harris N.T.Member.
