Great walk through Dovedale along the river Dove. Have walked here many times over the years and it never gets old.

Only the brave and strong were risking going over the stones as they were well underwater. Paths both sides of the Dove were flooded, as is probably often the case in winter, so wellies a good idea and poles too if you take the rocky southern path. As well as the shot walk from the Dovedale carpark (NT members park for free) you can do a longer walk from Milldale which has some interesting features and birdlife. Never seen and hear so many dippers.

Visited here December 30th for a walk. There had been a little rain in the area so the river Dove was a little more fast flowing than usual and also a little fuller. This meant we could not cross the stepping stones. This was not a problem as we walked the hills.
It was lots of fun as the rain had made it very muddy. The views were very beautiful.
This would be a lovely walk in the summer for a young family. You could have a little paddle in the river and see all the sheep/ ducks/wildlife.

These stepping stones are achievable - there are no stones put in place to specially trip you up! Note that sometimes river overflows and you can't cross properly (albeit this didn't stop me the time I visited...)

Been coming here for years, today was very foggy so difficult to see much but it is still beautiful. The car park was nearly empty for a change, remember to take change for the paying machines as in the winter they don't take cards unless you are a national trust member, it was also quite flooded so take walking boots as the stepping stones were under water and the other side very muddy and slippy. It is still a beautiful place to come to

Super picturesque and a lovely spot ! However it is very busy, and not accessible at all for people in wheelchairs, they should add another bridge but without steps, as it's very hard to access the rest of the park otherwise.

This is such a beautiful spot so picturesque & a lovely walk from ilam to get there. However it is rammed with some people who simply have no manners or respect either for people or the area that they are visiting. Witnessed them crawling on floor to access toilets rather than pay the 20p climbing over the nature reserve gate & leaving rubbish. This is not national trust fault it’s a reflection of these people.

Definitely a must see if you are in the area, but a little busy at times. If you do come then wear decent walking shoes as some of the paths are not that level. I imagine the mountain rescue are kept fairly busy in the area by people breaking legs and twisting ankles when they stray off the paths. That said you can probably at least get to the stones with a buggy. Walk beyond and the crowds disappear quite quickly to reveal a nice path through the valley where you can get down to the stream and sit in peace also.

I WOULD say Yes as it doesn't cost any money to walk the river dove. I haven been there for years and so it may be that you have to pay a charge to go to the car park

We are planning on visiting the area next Friday. We want to walk from Dovedale to Mildale. With the current weather, will we be able to cross the river and complete this walk, or is it flooded? I understand that the stepping stones may be under water, but is there an alternative way of crossing the river?

Currently flooded but you can get from the stepping stones to the car park with some puddle jumping.

Like the previous answers the left hand side is hard path. But even in October after a little rain the path was flooded so I would expect at the moment it would be too. Pack your wellies?
