This tourist attraction was very disappointing, a total waste of time and money. In my opinion it should be shut down as it certainly didn't meet it's description. The gardens (if you can call them gardens?) are down a long overgrown track which we walked down on a hot afternoon, looking forward to a drink and a sit down in the advertised cafe. When we got to the bottom and followed the sign to the entrance, there was no cafe. Instead we found the owner sitting in a big old greenhouse which contained an algae ridden old swimming pool and various pots of plants and seedlings around the edge. The greenhouse also housed an old piano and a couple of tables with broken bits of china on them. We were then treated to a chat about the land, what had been found on it in the last century and a walk around the pool looking at the potted plants. We were asked for our £3 each and then shown to the museum (in a shed like building) which was full of antique books and dusty furniture. After this he pointed out the exit of the wildlife garden. It seemed we had to go in the back way on our own with no sign posts or information. What we found was an overgrown mess, brambles everywhere snagging our clothes and no idea of how to get through. We literally spent a maximum of 10 minutes in there before coming out to find the owner talking to another unsuspecting couple. We love wildlife and were annoyed that this experience was certainly not what it was advertised as.

The gardens were a bit overgrown and the owner really should have a bit of a tidy up. A lot of long grass to walk through, but there is some interest. The indoor swimming pool is green and grubby and the plants around the edge sad looking. Don't waste your money.

Not for you if you like 'national trust type' gardens. I loved its quirkiness and it was a joy to learn of its construction...

Reading the leaflet about Shipley Gardens, it promised 30 acres of wild flowers. What we found, was run down buildings and the walk around the overgrown garden took all of 5 minutes. Save your money !!

This is certainly not what you'd expect to find when on a visit to a 'garden'. After driving quite a long way down a very narrow dirt track you arrive, and here there are no manicured lawns or weed free flower beds, instead there are 30 acres of land left to return to a natural state, full of wild life and amazing vegetation of every kind. Our visit started with a talk by Bob (the owner) as we walked around what used to be a swimming pool housed in a giant green house, a multitude of pots surrounded the pool and Bob explained that these were plants that he was propagating on. His knowledge on plants was amazing and he was more than happy to share his wealth of information with anyone who was interested. The grounds were a mixture of woods, little secret gardens, amazing plants and many lecterns with pictures and information. There is no sound to be heard from the road, the only noise was that of the beautiful peacocks which were strutting around.
A wonderful adventurous place for children but they would need to be well supervised as there places that could be hazardous, and there is an abundance of stinging nettles and quite a few brambles ready to trip up the unsuspecting visitor.
It may not be everyone's idea of a visit to a garden but at the cost of only £3.00 per person it is definitely well worth the investment.

Excellent gardens! Private tour from the owner which was amazing, he was articulate, knowledgeable and happy to answer questions. Would have enjoyed longer there

Where do I start, firstly we found it hard to believe the place in question was down what looked to be an old disused track.....where the sign said, don't be it is down there, believe it or not. The gentleman showing us round had lots of knowledge and he was lovely, apparently he said he had built every thing there. The gardens well I'm finding it hard to even say much about them to be fair. If he had not come out when he did we would have left and saved our 6 pounds, but to be polite we went in, lots of memorable items inside, so with that ok I shall except paying what I did, not sure its worth it but that's just my opinion.

We visited Shipley Gardens last Saturday and had the most interesting time talking to the owner and the tales he had to tell regarding the history and development over 50 years of the grounds and property. We sat outside the greenhouse where the defunct swimming pool is housed and now a pond for fish and newts. The pond is surrounded by various pots growing vegetables and fruit. We enjoyed refreshments in the sunshine with the amazing views. Sadly, the garden itself is now a little overgrown but it is still worth a visit to meet the owner who has cherished the garden over many years.

Firstly before I start I must say that the sign 'Shipley Gardens' is a bit misleading now. Maybe it was once a lovely garden to go around but to be honest I think it is a lot more interesting now!
My boyfriend & I had been staying in the area for a long weekend. On our last day I consulted Trip Advisor for what we could do nearby on our way home back to Liverpool. Shipley Gardens was one on the list. I read reviews first and went with an open mind. We found the 'gardens' down an old track. On arrival we parked in the car park & there was no sign of anyone & it all looked a bit un kept. Then the owner Bob appeared & told us it was not open but spent some time talking to us about his peacocks. The more interest we shown the more he wanted to share with us & eventually showed us into his huge wooden building that he built. He told us all about the history of it & all the really interesting items inside and how & where he acquired them from and told us loads of interesting information on them. He them took us down to his pool room which he also built. This was just a little gem of a place. The pool is now a swamp where newts and frogs live and around the outside he grows many different varieties of fruit & veg. Again there is an abundance of interesting items scatteted about all with their own stories. Every item & item of furniture has a story & he even had some old Roman coins and artifacts which were found on his land as there is a Roman Road buried underneath. Bob is truly a character and such a lovely guy taking the time with us to show us around when he was not open to the public. He is fascinating and has a lot of stories to tell all very interesting. I think the point of Shipley Gardens isnt the gardens anymore it is the life of Bob and his wife (who I think has now passed on from one of his comments). Someone needs to interview and write a book on this guy before all these fascinating stories and memories are forgotten. Even down to what wood the pool room is made out of and the story behind it is fascinating...just small details like that and information like that would be overlooked and never known about which would be a terrible shame. Go with an open mind and don't go looking for nice gardens...go looking for interest, quirkiness and being taken back in time to the fascinating life of Bob!

We had seen the brochure for this garden & it looked good on paper.
The reality is that the old man who owns it is still trying to live in the past.
Which is a pity as he is most genuine in his love for the gardens.
He gave us a little guided tour of his house before taking us down to the old inside swimming pool that is now a run down building that has lots of memories for him.
The gardens them selves are OK but show a lack of work that is needed to keep it up to standard.
People should still visit as it will not last for ever.
