Great day for the family at the Christmas Pantomime and Santa Special.
Really well organised, pantomime extremely entertaining, great Santa and Elves for the children on the train.
Well organised trail through the museum to meet Mrs Claus and good value presents for the children.

An amazing place to visit, plenty of exhibits to explore, a ride on a standard gauge train, and also a miniature railway.
Always somewhere we had planned to visit, and when Showbus was planned to be here, we finally got here and had an excellent day out.
Highly recommended and would easily spend all day here exploring.

Was a little bit disappointed with the lack of information on the site. Arrived at 10:30 but rides were not running for an hour or so but no info!
The whole area is a bit chaotic but so much of railway interest everywhere. It was Winterish and so probably looked worse than normal but as so many museums probably lacked enthusiasts. Loads to see and eventually a short but fun standard gauge ride. The best part for me was the miniature railway. Ran fequently and well loaded. 2 engines being used 1 steam 1 diesel outline. A really good miniature railway and a great length.

We went here for the bus show, but also to incorporate the trains. The centre did a really good job of parking all the busses due to heavy down pours the field the busses were going to be in was very soft and not viable for the buses. The place did a very good job of placing the busses around the site and hard standing car park. The Marshalls were a bit wishy/washy, they didn't seem to know where to park us public, stop start when is should have/could have been smooth running. Plus getting in was a bit hectic, we had pre-paid tickets and yet they still made you queue up for the pay on the day queue, until a lady Marshall did some joined up thinking and checked our tickets and let us pre-paid through, that shortened the entrance queue a lot.

Wasn't aware of this place previously but saw the Car Fest day advertised. On arrival we were surprised at the size of the place, there is stuff everywhere but because it is spaced out nothing is crowded. The museum is excellent, better in some ways than York. Staff and volunteers are friendly and enthusiastic. Picnic area, decent toilets, and overall just a lovely relaxed nostalgic atmosphere. Lovely day out.

My son loves all things trains, but as we have visited many museums in the south east and beyond, we are running out of new ones to visit. When I came across this one online I couldn't wait to give it a try with my son. It really is a gem of a visit, car parking is easy, and staff are all very friendly, and admission is reasonable. They had a steam train which goes up and down the track, and you can't ride this as many times as you like, sitting in an old fashioned carriage. They have miniature railway for £1.50 extra pp, as well as various trains from around the world to see, including an old royal mail train, with staff on board, keen to pass on the history, to this great piece of British history. They have a sticker activity sheet for little ones, which my son enjoyed. You can bring a picnic, or a sandwich is around £3.50, they also do other hot food like chips, sausage and jacket potatoes. All in all definitely worth the journey up from Kent. We all had a great time, and would definitely like to visit again one day.

We went with our 14 month old grandson and despite it being busy, all the attractions were well managed and the site kept clean. There were two character engines in steam, Thomas and Percy with a steady turnover of passengers. The miniature railway was also worth a visit with its extensive scenic track and range of diesel, steam profile diesel, and live steam hauled trains. The all inclusive tickets were good value.

Myself and my father visited Quainton Road as a pair of railway enthusiasts, and we loved it, so much so that it prompted me to write this review, which is something that I very rarely do. Right from the outset, we found that the staff and volunteers were very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, and would all be willing to give up their time to chat to you or assist you. Both the map leaflet and the site itself are very well laid out, with the site being big enough to handle lots of people, as they can be spread out well in the museum, the workshop, the large outdoor space, or the well-run miniature railway to name just a few things to enjoy on site.
The site as a whole was crammed full of railwayana and memorabilia - there was something of interest on every wall! The museum itself is worth the visit alone, with so many interesting displays and artefacts. There's something for everyone, from interactive displays and a dress-up van for the children, to documentaries and themed displays. Being able to explore the wagons and coaches which have been mocked up to look as they would have done inside is a brilliant idea. It felt like a proper museum, rather than a euphemistically titled storage area for railway rolling stock, that you often see at other railways. Throughout the entire site there are clear information boards that tell you all about the building or vehicle that you're currently looking at, something sometimes not seen at a heritage railway site. If I was being super picky, some more provenance on the various items in the display cabinets would have been great - it would have been nice to know what they were used for and where they were used, and how the railway came to obtain them.
There was a choice of freshly prepared hot food and drink available, which tasted great, as well as plenty of snacks & confectionery etc. Pricewise it's probably about what you'd expect to pay for such things, not extortionately expensive. There's space to eat inside and outside, although the inside area could get a little packed on wet weather days!
There seemed to be enough things to keep the children occupied, certainly none we saw looked bored! The good thing for enthusiasts is that you can get close to most of the vehicles on site, including those being actively worked on in one of the workshops, which is always a bonus.
There seemed to be sufficient parking on site, although we didn't visit on a busy event day. Most areas are on a level surface, and the large footbridge at one end of the site has lifts, allowing those with mobility issues access to as much as possible.
All-in-all, it was several hours very well spent, for those interested in history, railways, or just looking for a day out. 10/10 would recommend, 10/10 would visit again.
IF I had to find something negative, it would be that we didn't see every item of rolling stock on site, and there was a very nice model of a class 20 locomotive in a display cabinet that I would have loved to give a home to! These things are said being very greedy and with my tongue firmly in cheek!

Came here on 10th April 2024 for a ‘drive a steam engine experience’. Wow! Such friendly and knowledgable staff who explained everything in simple language and allowed an hours driving and firing (shared with another participant). Large railway museum to look around too with plenty for children to get involved with. Nice large cafe. I’ll be doing it again.

Visiting friends on the weekend of 31aug until the 3rd. When are you open?
كُتب بتاريخ 13 أغسطس 2019
Opening is variable. Not every weekend. School holidays are more popular, as are event days like Thomas the Train. Check their website

Hi I’ve booked on line to visit on Sunday 5th Aug. Can we use the trains anytime of so we get an allocated time. Approx how long do u need to spend to cover everything?
كُتب بتاريخ 22 يوليو 2019
The trains can be used at anytime, you ride up the track and back again twice.. it only lasts about 10 mins if that.
The min railway was great fun too and i think it was only £1.00 per person (this is just to help with the upkeep of the mini engines as they are all volunteers own kit). we were there approx 4hrs.

Is there a restaurant or cafe that has high chairs? What sort of food is served?
كُتب بتاريخ 1 ديسمبر 2017
There are a lot of high chairs available to use in the cafe area.

We've booked tickets for a Thomas day but can't see any info about when to arrive for your departure. Anyone offer advice how long before your booked train to arrive? Thanks in advance
كُتب بتاريخ 20 نوفمبر 2016
Hi there, we open at 10am and you can come anytime - but you must aim to be there at least 20 minutes before your allocated train time! You can then spend the whole day there if you like! Take in the kids' show and face painting. Have lunch in the café. Hopefully look around the museum (it may have to be closed if the weather is particularly bad!)
I really hope you enjoy your visit!

What are the carriages like on a thomas day?
كُتب بتاريخ 13 نوفمبر 2016
Hello, the carriages are old ones, with separate compartments of 6 or 8 seats. A corridor runs the length of the train connecting compartments together with doors coming off the corridor taking you into each separate compartment. Does this help? Thank you!
