Chester Cathedral is beautiful. The staff are so helpful. We did a tour of the tower with our guide Emma who was brilliant, although it’s not for everyone as it is a bit of a climb through narrow passageways but they warn you first. We ate in the cafe and the food was very tasty. Thoroughly recommended.

This cathedral is magnificent. It is large so takes some time to get round it and do it justice. The craftsmanship inside is superb from the stone masonry to the tiled floors and the wooden carving to the stained glass. They recommend a donation of £5/person minimum and it is definitely worth it.

Nice interesting place to visit and plenty to see. Well stocked gift shop and nice cafe with good selection of cakes etc. Friendly staff. Toilet facilities particularly male ones could do with an upgrade.

After getting good instructions at the Visitor Information Center I headed to magnificent Chester Cathedral, bought a ticket (£4.50), and started with its lovely cloisters. They were so peaceful and atmospheric… Interesting how the modern sculpture “Water of Life” in the center of the Cloister Garden gracefully blends with old brick walls, towers, sculptures, gargoyles, etc. It doesn’t spoil the impression, it only adds to it. There are also charming lighted glass sculptures scattered under the trees and shrubs: this is “Enchanted Garden of Lights” presented by “Pyramid”, the nearby Borowski Glass Studio. They also add charm to the image of the old Cathedral.
Another unusual thing was that there were studios for kids scattered in the nave as well as the world famous railway model, “Making Tracks”. Kids were totally crazy about this railway and I can understand why. So… Chester Cathedral is not just a church these days and that’s such a good thing.
The Quire stalls of the Cathedral were constructed around 1380. The Quire is one of the Cathedral’s most significant treasures: its elaborate wooden carvings are truly spectacular - the Royal craftsmen of the 14th century created something incredible… how was it even possible? I was literally going in circles admiring every little detail of this real masterpiece of woodcarving.
The Charterhouse with its magnificent stained glass windows, the 19th century Grand Organ, graceful Lady Chapel are gorgeous as well.
It was around 3:00pm: time for my late lunch. Decided to eat inside the Cathedral in its beautiful “Cafe 1082 in The Refectory”, which I highly recommend. It is located in the same dining hall where medieval monks had their meals.

The entry was a bit on the pricey side. Apparently it is a donation but it felt rather pushy. The men and ladies on the door seemed like bouncers patrolling a nightclub. I sent my two teenage children to use the toilet and slip in to gain free entry as I felt begrudged paying for all of us.
Miniature railway attraction set up in the main hall, so great surprise for any train loving visitors. Lots of interactive craft based activities for smaller children to engage with.
The garden and grounds were very beautiful and well maintained as was the building itself and the stain glass windows. Would I go again? Probably not. Would I recommend? Yeah sure, if you are religious, have a special interest in this area.
Should be FREE. Chester cathedral do better please.

Another beautiful building that is a pleasure to just wander around and admire the craftsmanship from an age without computers and apps and Google. It's a lovely fine old building.

This is our heritage, paid for by the tithes of our ancestors and now The Church of England makes us pay to see it, despite their 10% per annum yield on their £10+ billion investment (they own Hyde Park and 10% of the Metro Centre).
Capitalist (even Neoliberal) but not very Christian.

Beautiful Cathedral. Ask someone to point out the imp gargoyle to you. It is inside the Cathedral and was put there by the same mason who put the imp into Lincoln Cathedral.
Visit the Garth, the inner garden for a few moments of peace.

Came here on an August late morning. I hadn’t realised beforehand that there was a large model railway setup in the middle of the nave happening that day, so the main body of the cathedral was rather busy!
It is a beautiful cathedral both inside and out, and the cloister garden is small but attractive. There was a lights/glass animals exhibition in the garden too, so more busyness!
The cloisters themselves, and the quieter parts of the cathedral, are really quite atmospheric. The ancient choir stalls are superb. I also loved some of the windows, and there are a couple of modern art installations to discover as well.
It was £5 to enter when I visited (£4.50 without gift aid) which did feel a bit steep.
The refectory is worth going to see even if you are not eating, as it is apparently the oldest (?) of its type in the country.

The cathedral is really beautiful and well worth visiting. My husband was enthralled by the Pete Waterman model railway display, while I chatted to a lovely guide who showed me the Lego model of the cathedral which is now completed. The cathedral is much bigger than I expected, stunning stained glass windows and the quire and nave are magnificent. There is an entry charge, which upsets some people and I understand why, but the cathedral is reliant on donations to keep it going. I recommend a visit if you find yourself in Chester, you won't be disappointed.

Two questions:
1. Can you tour the Cathedral on a Sunday? It appears there are services throughout the day, but wondering if you can tour in between them. It just so happens our trip will land us there on a Sunday, although we will be there late afternoon on Saturday also.
2. Can you walk the tower without taking part in a formal tour? in other words, is it open to the public who did not purchase the tour?
كُتب بتاريخ 16 نوفمبر 2023
The tower tour is a guided tour only.
Very good though an the guides are brilliant.
Best to book online before you go an that will also give you available times an dates

Search Little Roodee (not the closest) but it should give you a list of car parks in Chester - then choose what suits you. We parked here and walked around the walls in an anti-clockwise direction. Ideal for what we wanted. We climbed down at various points to see the amphitheatre and the cathedral.

Which is the best priced car park needs to be open Saturday evening
كُتب بتاريخ 13 ديسمبر 2021
sorry cant help used the train but be warned Chester multi storey car parks are all small and a nightmare if you have a large car. Go to Liverpool instead
كُتب بتاريخ 14 ديسمبر 2021
There is a car park just at the back of the cathedral

We were able to leave our backpack in a locker provided by our guide at the beginning of our tour. It is possible however to carry a small backpack if you wish.

Are there any toilets suitable for wheelchair users at the cathedral?
كُتب بتاريخ 27 سبتمبر 2018
Hi there, I cannot recall from personal visit re wheelchair user toilets, however, their website would indicate that there are such facilities. Kind regards, Ian

I certainly did use my camera. Especially on the Lego project. They are aiming to build a model of the whole of the cathedral in Lego. Pay a £1 and you can add a brick - or more if you're flush! It's really coming on and is brilliant. The walls are covered in bible stories all in mosaics. I've now had some great photos but don't know how to add them to the review I've already done!

Thanks for your review. Did you feed the vulture as part of the display or did you book an experience? What times were the displays? Appreciate your help.
