We always go to buy mackerel or cod from Pengelly’s when on holiday in looe. It is always very fresh.

Last day of our stay ,decided to give this outlet a try as not had any luck with seafood or fish in this town in previous visits 2022 , beware firstly Didn't tare off plastic tubs before adding prawns so we paid for tub at huge price per 100g !
Rude, uninterested female serving who handled sale with no care -our expensive prawns and crab meat £14
To top it off the crab meat had a short dark curly hair in it -YUK! No thankyou Mrs pengelly

Bought five red mullet, 1kg of mussels, 1 portion fillet of fresh salmon...about £ 30.00 all in. Very high quality all round. Would purchase again. Fish had fresh smell of the sea. fed five people.

Bought some of the finest natural smoked haddock ive ever had here yeaterday, had it with poached eggs this morning it was amazing... Love this place always pop in whenever were staying in Looe.

Just put your order in and collect on the day you leave
Park in the town for £1 and grab some scones as well.
Staff are friendly and knowledgeable and happy to explain the different types of fish to you.
The highlight was WHITE CRAB MEAT ( which is just claw meat only) who knew it was a thing? Totally delicious but £13 for 200g but well worth it as it’s totally different from normal “crab meat”

Bought some mussels today they were very expensive and half were cracked or broken
The mixed seafood salad had no taste at all apart from vinegar very overpowering!!
Won’t be going back and the staff need to get some manners

Really expensive and the assistant didn’t bother fully removing the scales of the sea bass she filleted . Did half a job and given the prices charged I would expect decent fishmonger skills. Had a cheaper and better experience with.more friendly, helpful customer service at Leeds fish market.It wasn’t even a busy day so no excuse. Would not recommend

Fantastic fishmongers with very knowledgeable, friendly staff. I Highly recommend this fishmongers as the quality is always great. I have witnessed the fish coming straight off the boat and into the shop.

Bought 1kg of mussels from pengellys in looe today and firstly, our experience in the shop wasnt great - I was passed off by the young man behind the counter to his colleague - “you deal with her” and - when asking for 1kg mussels was greeted with a sigh.
Upon getting home we noticed almost half of the mussels were cracked, open or broken in some way.
We had transported them very carefully and gently - there is no way this could have happened in transit
.
So disappointed when they were also significantly pricier than our usual local fishmonger in North Devon.
This all said - the mussels that did make it into the saucepan were meaty and nice - although sadly, I suspect not today’s catch.
We were so excited to find Pengellys and read so many positive reviews.. but we wouldn’t return... and will be needing extra food tonight to fill us up!

When leaving Looe after a lovely weeks holiday we bought a hen crab to take home and dress. The young man who sold it to us sad it was freshly boiled and should be allowed to cool and therefore not to be put into the ice we purchased until it was cool. We obeyed these instructions to the letter. After arriving home my wife opened up the crab. It was disgusting - a mass of foul smelling water in both the body and the claws. The whole crustacean had to be disposed of. It cost an astonishing £16.00 plus £1.00 for ice - we have never had to pay for ice before when buying from Richard & Ruth (the previous proprietors).
We notified Pengellys by e-mail the next day. Over a week has now elapsed and we have not been extended the courtesy of either an acknowledgement or reply - so much for customer care and common courtesy.
Our advice for future prospective customers of Pengellys - DO NOT BUY!.
There are 2 other fishmongers within yards of Pengelleys. Give them a try and save your money.
We notified Pengellys by e-mail the next day. Over a week has now elapsed and we have not been extended the courtesy of either an acknowledgement or reply - so much for customer care and common courtesy.
