For nearly 50 years I wanted to visit a number of megalithic sites in Cornwall - many in the West Penwith area. I can think of no better way to have fulfilled my long-held wish than to have booked a day with Martyn. A knowledgeable guide, a smooth driver and good company.

Martyn is an amateur archeologist with lots of local knowledge about Cornwall and the history of stone monuments in the region. Sights include standing stones, an iron age village and fort, monuments, stone circles and monuments/tombs/ritual structures dating from the neolithic (6000 years old) through the bronze age and the iron age. We found him knowledgeable and personable and enjoyed his perspective. I would recommend this as a day-long tour for those with an interest in prehistoric archeology who enjoy educational and thought-provoking tours. Lots of open space for kids to run around and maybe learn something

Martyn was a terrific guide. He not only provides transportation to a variety of stone age remains, he presents them in a coherent narrative that helps visitors start to understand the way human settlements changed over millennia. It happened that we followed up our time in Cornwall with several days in London. The British Museum had a special exhibit on the people who are believed to have constructed and settled near Stonehenge that we were able to attend, and our exposure to the ancient stones of Cornwall and Martyn's commentary made that experience easier to grasp as well. Martyn is clearly an educator, and explains things well and at the right level of detail. As Americans, we are not comfortable driving in the UK, so the chance to see more of the Cornish countryside was quite welcome to us.
This could be a fascinating day for older children/teenagers who have an interest in ancient societies, but is not suitable for younger children,
We were lucky to have a perfect day, in terms of weather, and the amount of walking on Martyn's tour was quite manageable. The Lamorna Pottery garden was a perfect lunch spot, offering very reasonably priced and delicious options, including many that were vegetarian and vegan.
My only complaint is that Martyn did not have copies of his book to sell on the tour, which would have allowed us to save the cost of postage.

This is NOT just a tour. I always search for "special" types of events when I go on holiday, where I'll get to know the area, meet the locals and this was beyond what I could have hoped for. We were able to do the day drive tour and covered a wide area enjoying the areas as we were driven from site to site. I have a degree in history and my husband is an engineer and Martyn's commentary on the Stones and time span through the Stone, Bronze and other ages sparked different thoughts, different questions from both of us. We spent the entire day together and took away a wealth of information on society, civilization, geology, history and so on. We lucked out having the most beautiful day to hike to be able to view vistas from the most beneficial points. I would advise if you don't have "moderate" abilities to hike, you may wish to seek another event but for others it is a great event for a day out and Martyn does attempt to accommodate those who engage his tours. I'm looking forward reading Martyn's book and learning more and this has inspired me to, when I am exploring other areas, to again, seek out this type of experience. I will have to say Martyn has set a high bar so I'm not sure how others will measure up. I do encourage others who are looking for a unique way to enjoy the beautiful countryside and way to learn more about early England and a bit of other areas as well, this is spot on for both. Will recommend Ancient Stones of Kernow highly to friends and acquaintances alike. Made sure the B&B we stayed had got a brochure for their "suggestions basket" for their visiting guests.His wife's lovely sketches on her card collection made a terrific take away for me. I'm actually going to use some of them to make a collage to hang when I return home to remind me of how special this day was. Thank so much Martyn!

My sister and I were traveling without a car in Cornwall last month. We very much wanted to see some of the ancient sites in the area but that is difficult to do without driving. Our day long tour with Martin turned out to be an excellent solution. He is very knowledgeable and personable. The tour was arranged more or less chronologically, which helped in understanding the history of the area. In addition it was a great value.

Martyn Jackson literally wrote the book on ancient stone monuments in Cornwall (entitled Ancient Stones of Kernow, with illustrations by his wife, Amanda), and he is willing to share his vast knowledge with tour participants. You can choose from a walking tour or car tour (details on his website). Because the monuments are quite spread out over western Cornwall, it is possible to see more of the iconic ones on the car tour. However, if you’re an avid walker and don’t mind limiting the monuments you view to those within walking distance of St. Ives, the walking tour is less expensive. The fee for the car tour is money well spent, however. Martyn is very sensitive to the needs, interests, and physical abilities of his tour participants, and is willing to adjust the agenda accordingly. He is also a most amiable travelling companion. The monuments that my spouse and I saw with Martyn ranged from Stone Age to Iron Age. We saw Chun Quoit, Chun Castle, Lanyon Quoit, Men-an-Tol, the Pipers, the Merry Maidens, the entrance grave that is near the Merry Maidens, and the Carn Euny village. All that even though Martyn was very patient with my slow walking and climbing! (Only the ascent to Chun Quoit and Chun Castle really requires anything in the way of climbing.) We also had a very good lunch at Lamorna Pottery (not included in the tour fee). It was a very enjoyable day; really the highlight of our week in Cornwall. I highly recommend the Ancient Stones tours to anyone.

My wife did all the advance homework for our trip and she is the one who selected Martyn Jackson as our guide. She is a thorough lady and Martyn did not disappoint our expectations. On our travels, we are aware that we have only so many days, and so don’t want to waste any of them.
Martyn made excellent use of our time and showed himself to be prompt, courteous, considerate, personable, articulate and easy to be with. To the point, he certainly knows his subject matter and was able to give good answers to my many questions as we went along, and also demonstrates the sensitivity to adjust to his clients’ level of knowledge.
I’m up in years but reasonably physically fit and noted how Martyn adjusted our pace and activities instinctively. We found him to be a comfortable and companionable guide who has the depth of knowledge to satisfy the keenness of our curiosity about the megaliths left around the landscape by the ancients. In sum, he had the degree of knowledge and the congenial persona to give us a memorable day exploring a fascinating locale.

Our early spring day out around Penwith's ancient stones - guided by Martyn, has to be the highlight on our Cornwall break. Martyn collected us from our hotel - and drove us around six of the major sites for around six hours through fabulous countryside. Most sites were in easy access to the road - but three sites involved brief walks of up to 20 minutes. At all times Martyn was both friendly and knowledgeable. Recommended to everyone interested in ancient British history or Cornwall's spectacular countryside.

I had an interesting day touring the key ancient stone sites in Cornwall. Martyn was very knowledgeable and easy to get along with. There is some moderate walking involved to get to some sites and we had a break at a lovely cafe for lunch. I highly recommend this tour for anyone with an interest in the history of the area before the Romans arrived.

The guide is very helpful and knowledgable about the history of Cornwall and also shared lots of local information. The pace of the trip was good, and good value for money when including transport and guide. The scenery is beautiful and some moderate relaxing walking involved.
