With the help of GPS, we were able to find the country lane and parking lot leading to the Tarr Steps. First hurdle: figuring out the parking machine. When traveling in the UK, it's best to keep a stash of pound coins on hand, because credit cards don't always work. It's a short downhill walk to the river and the Tarr clapper bridge, which was a busy place on the day we went. Families and dogs splashed in the water and clambered over the rocks. We snapped a few pictures and moved on.

Lovely family walk. We walked around 4 miles by the river. The steps are currently damaged due to a recent flood, but it was still worth the trip. We saw lots of lovely wildlife, skimmed stones and played pooh sticks.

Good parking only £3 for the day. A nice easy walk through pleasant woodland. Didn't see any wildlife at all, probably because of the hundreds of dogs being walked. Worth a trip if you are staying in area.

We read the information about not following your Sat Nav and then did. Don't, as it takes you through narrow roads, with tall hedges and brings you to the wrong side of the steps. We realised this just before we got there, had to turnaround and travel another 10 miles. The situation is lovely, well maintained and the path was easy to follow.

Beautiful location for a countryside walk along the river, the paths are well maintained with good signage. Easy to follow through woodland, the Tarr Steps bridge is across the river by the Tarr steps Inn.
Nice spots for a picnic or gentle stroll.

We visited yesterday and it was very rainy but also enjoyable. A couple of points worth noting :
The toilets were not very clean, tissue over floor, it didn't help that the floor was wet with rainwater. No soap. When we arrived the disabled toilet had a closed sign up saying there was no water but this was later removed.
No picnic benches anywhere which was disappointing as we had brought our own food. As it was so wet we were not able to sit on the grass. Very few seats around to stop and enjoy the view.
There was a food hut in operation and this did have a picnic table for people who bought food from them.
£3 all day for the car park was good. Lots of good things as described by other visitors.
I would visit again but on a day when we could picnic outside because the open areas were plentiful.

Lovely location and stunning circular walk which took a few hours to do. Family of 4 with 10 year old and 8 month year old Dachshund. Everyone loved it, including the dog. There were a few coffee trucks on site providing snacks and hot drinks at average prices. The Tarr steps themselves are interesting and unique but the circular walk along the river is the highlight. We did plenty of rock hopping which ended up with most of us getting our feet wet but excellent fun.

A beautiful little corner of Exmoor with an interesting ancient bridge. There are several footpaths that converge here where you can cool your feet and have an ice cream or a coffee. If you come by car be prepared to walk to the river - it’s a bit of a hill and not short- and for the twisty single track roads. There is a small car park beside the river for disabled visitors. A nice atmosphere and plenty of space to find a quiet spot to enjoy the area.

My partner and I did the Withypool - Tarr Steps - Withypool circular walk (7.1 miles / 11.5 km) on a lovely Spring day. It's free to park in Withypool and there is also a lovely café there (which we frequented after completing the walk) and they had lovely homemade cakes.
You really need good walking shoes as it can get boggy in parts, especially after heavy rainfall. The steps were pretty cool and going there off-season there were hardly any visitors. Close by there is a pub in case you need liquid refreshments and next to the steps there are picnic benches too.
The walk is quite hilly in parts, but it's worth it for the views!

The Tarr Steps is a clapper bridge across the River Barle in the Exmoor National Park, Somerset.
It is a typical clapper bridge construction, the bridge's listing assesses it as medieval in origin. The stone slabs weigh up to two tons each. The bridge is 180 feet (55 m) long and has 17 spans.
It is so amazing that such an old hand-built bridge can have lasted through the centuries and still serves today to allow people to cross the river.

You may be able to get to the car park but this is accessed by means of a narrow country lane with limited passing spaces.
You may be better parking elsewhere and then walking to it. Ordnance Survey map advisable not stanav.
Has the damage been repaired on the steps yet?
