‪A fascinating trawl through history‬
سبتمبر 2021
‪Peace and quiet in the city, accompanied only by the wildlife. There are large monuments which astonish, small graves which are pitiable, vaults and gravestones, inscriptions of every kind, people known only to fellow Plymothians, others known to the UK - even the world! - and the histories of the great and good written on stone and marble.

The Visitor Centre has exhibitions and a very good tea shop, and there are often interesting guided tours of the cemetary, given by the volunteers.

It's a huge site and there's far too much to see in a single visit. ‬

‪Peaceful and well kept‬
زوجان • يونيو 2021
‪This cemetery is dripping in history and well worth a walk through.
It’s a lovely community space that dog walkers respectfully use and mourners can peacefully pay their respects. It’s a nice alternative to Central Park if you want to walk somewhere quieter and more peaceful.
The Peverell locals are really nice and friendly.
It’s not a depressing place, more somber and respectful than anything. But it is a lovely place to walk through with your dog if you have a more sedentary and chilled pup. It’s not somewhere for energetic dogs who want to play fetch and run around.‬

‪Schöner, teils verwilderter Friedhof mit keltischen Kreuzen, schiefen Grabsteinen und edlen Statuen‬
مايو 2018

‪Go and see the City of Plymouth Civilian War Memorial‬
بمفردك • مارس 2018
‪One of my grandfathers is buried in this historic Victorian cemetery in an unmarked grave. That is of interest to me but what ought to be of interest to every Plymothian is the Civilian War Memorial (dedicated in 2010) situated in the restored Victorian Chapel.

I grew up in Swilly Road (more recently North Prospect Road). The first bombs of the Second World War Plymouth blitz were dropped on 142 Swilly Road and five residents, including an 11 year old boy, died as a result. These are the first listed on Civilian War Memorial that names all 1250 victims of enemy action.

The worst of these attacks took place over seven nights in March and April 1941. One of the bombs partially destroyed my father's home in Stoke (he was 12 at the time) and the family, my grandparents and their two boys, never lived together as a family again.

Nearly every Plymothian could probably tell a similar story. Take a solemn moment to stand in front of the beautiful incised slate memorial and take a wander around the cemetery, administered by the Ford Park Cemetery Trust since 2000. Plenty of information about opening times is available on the cemetery website.

Another civilian war memorial is situated at Efford Cemetery.‬

‪A nicely kept Victorian cemetery which houses a small visitor's centre, but this is only open on certain days and at certain hours during the week so you need to check for details if you want to visit. Less than a mile from the bustling centre to get away from it all for a bit, you can enjoy a nice relaxing rest or a very pleasant walk around the cemetery.‬

‪Beautiful place‬

‪I have visited the cemetery a couple of years ago and revisited it yesterday. I am one of those people who enjoys visiting Victorian era cemeteries. Forde Park is an outstanding Victorian age cemetery. Places of this era and type were designed to be walked round by the general public so the ornate gravestones can be appreciated. The place is great to see wildlife as well. The people who maintain this gem are to be applauded. The peace and quiet of the place be appreciated in the many dedicated benches dotted around the cemetery. Only one minor gripe, I could not use the cafe as I had my dog with me. About time you moved with the times like many other cafes in Plymouth and generally and made yourself dog friendly. It should be stated though that dog are allowed in the cemetery grounds.‬

‪Having discovered during my family history research that my Great-Grandfather is buried here my brother and I called into the Visitor Centre. The volunteers are extremely helpful and provided.loads of information about my ancestors. Because my great-grandfather was serving in the Navy when he died in 1915 there are no search fees. All ex-Services searches are provided free which I thought was a touching service. We were even shown to his grave by one of the volunteers.
It is a huge cemetery covering 34 acres and containing 769 casualties from WWI and 198 casualties from WWII.‬
