The tour from Jerry Sibley is not to be missed! Jerry has built up a fantastic knowledge of the history of Plymouth, and of the Jewish community, and weaves it together in a way that we found enthralling, and very interactive. Allow minimum 2 hours. The tour will be of interest to those with jewish heritage, and those with none. Donations welcome....

This is one of my favourite places. Excellent talks about history, religion and how special this place is to Plymouth. I watched a large group of school children as they came out and they were all smiles having enjoyed their visit so much.
Always a warm welcome here from Jerry the Custodian who delivers the lively talks - and often serves tea and biscuits in the cosy adjacent hall. Dexter the amazing and larger than life cat will give you a special welcome, too.

We ARE Orthodox Jews and thought there was nothing new to learn. We THOUGHT that this would just be another example of a once thriving community.
How wrong we were. This was actually the story of a part time caretaker, who, when told that the Synagogue was no longer viable, set about making attractive to visitors, who now make voluntary contributions which help to keep the place open.
Jerry Sibley, shares his years of voluntart research with visitors. He has trawled the synagogue records, the minute books and every available resource both within the synagogue and within the city's historical information, in order to make his presentation.
To my mind, Plymouth city should be taking over this attraction, they must think ahead, to a time when Jerry is no longer working and the few remaining Plymouth Jews cannot afford to upkeep this jewel.

It's fantastic to see that this is now #1 of places to visit in Plymouth! Visiting is not that easy - you can't just turn up, and the place may be hard to find. But if you have a chance to come as part of a group tour I warmly recommend it, particularly for Jerry's obvious love of the building and his deep and extensive knowledge of its history. Jerry will be the first to apologise for his sometimes lame jokes, but he really knows his stuff and can bring the story of the synagogue to life.

Woe Jerry goes the extra extra mile and is incredibly knowledgeable as well as fun. Plus a great host. 14 members of plymouth U3A attended. We all enjoyed the warm welcome and tea and cakes. The talk was much longer than 2 hours but only because we were so riveted we didn’t want him to stop.
For those timid people who have heard rumours that you have to wear a black cap. That’s not true at all. I did volunteer to play dress up. But more importantly it’s possible for all to actually hold some of the ancient holy objects. A thing I never imagined ( as a non Jew) I would ever be a able to do,
The synagogue interior with its ark and stained glass window is beautiful and hidden away. Though I now understand. It’s NOT HIDDEN ON PURPOSE. Lol.

A fascinating and informative two and a half hours with Jerry, the best possible guide to the unique history of this important building, to Jewish belief and practice, and to the role the community has played in Plymouth over the last 500 years. Jerry's a great storyteller, and as other reviewers have pointed out, really makes that rich hidden history come alive. He's a volunteer, and it's important to book your visit in advance, but it's well worth it. Not to be missed as part of your trip to Plymouth.

Excellent experience for the whole family. The oldest, still operating English speaking Shul in the English speaking world. Our informative guide Jerry was tremendous. The shul itself is beautiful, stained glass windows, fantastic Aron and Bima, and is a great opportunity to learn about the fascinating history of the Jews of Plymouth.

It was my first time even inside a synagogue and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
Doesn’t really matter if you are into the religion or not, his tour is excellent for anyone. I have visited with a 12 years old and Jerry managed to keep his attention at all the time.
Jerry was an absolute gentleman and his knowledge is immense.
Definitely a must do in Plymouth.
Don’t miss it out as it is really an experience.
Just read a previous comment saying that it’s hard to find but it’s really not and you will learn why the entrance is in that particular location.
In my job I organise tour of Plymouth for adult language students and it will be in the itinerary every single time from now on.
Thank you Jerry, see you again soon!

I am truly without words after spending over 2 hours in the incredibly knowledgable hands of Jerrie, who single-handedly seems to be keeping untold gems of the history of Plymouth and the environs, as well as the Jewish community over hundreds of years. It was more informative about Plymouth than any guidebook and I certainly gained more knowledge about Judaism in my visit than in several years of Sunday school. The synagogue survives based solely on contributions from the the visit, which is free of charge, so please consider a generous (cash) donation.

Sadly no access to building and no information about it for visitors. An information board about its history would have been very interesting.

My husband and I are visiting family in Exmouth and would like to day trip to Plymouth. This tour has great reviews and we are very interested. We are from the US and are Jewish. Our available dates are 17 or 18 October. Any chance we could do this tour? We are taking the train from Exmouth to Plymouth. Thanks

If you go onto the Shul's website by googling it. you will find Jerry's email address or mobile. He will answer you more or less straight away via email and make arrangements to give you a tour. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did, we are Jewish and learnt a lot.

Is the congregation dwindling because of age and migration as suggested by a recent reviewer or is it because of intermarriage with non observant Jews and Gentiles and a general lack of commitment to attending synagogue, just as with Christians and church?
Jerry S
Plymouth, UK14 مساهمة
Dwindling congregation and the reasons for it doesn't really have a bearing on visiting the Synagogue. The Synagogue is open for visitors and worshippers alike, If you would like to visit and know more about the building, it's history and it's people? Then booking a tour is the best option.

I read elsewhere that there is a Jewish burial ground alongside the Ford Park cemetery but that there is also a very old Jewish burial ground in the oldest part of the city somewhere between the Barbican and the Hoe. Does the synagogue have any responsibility for that and are there any visits? Or a website with details?
Jerry S
Plymouth, UK14 مساهمة
The new cemetery (1850's - present) is located at the end of Gifford Place I do regular talks and tours there during the Plymouth History Festival every May The Old cemetery on the Hoe (1740's - 1860's) is located on Lambhay Hill (between New Street, Castle Dyke Lane and Lambhay Hill behind Garrison Green) you can find a burial list and more on the susser archives website.
I do do the occasional visit for relatives, but intend to include The Hoe Cemetery in the History Festival tours Next May.
Please do call me for further information on 07753 267616
Best wishes Jerry
