A bit underwhelming really. Not much left of this one. Good gatehouse that's all. A few walls. Some info boards. The English Heritage guy there was friendly and we appreciated him telling us to keep clear of the long grass on the outskirts of the site for fear of adders and ticks. Half hour job.

I recently visited here with a chum, the first thing to note is that the car park is at the bottom of a slow and gradual slope as you approach the English Heritage cabin and the entrance to the castle.
The staff member there was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable about the site's history, which dates back to the 12th century, it's a shame that Cromwell's army decided to flatten the place in the 17th century. There are the remnants of the old inner castle which you can stroll through, and if you look up you might just see one of the original existing window frames that survived the onslaught.
The site itself once you have gained entry and gone up the inclined drawbridge is not too bad to get around, there is plenty of open space and on the day we visited there were only 8 people there, 4 of them were enjoying a picnic. We found the old castle very peaceful and relaxing, oh and if you walk to the south edge (turn right as you go in) you'll be able to see the NEW Sherborne castle.

The old castle is a little awkward to find. The access road is signposted, but there is no sign at the entrance which looks like the drive to a privatre house.
if you venture just past the gate, you will see the welcome sign and also see the car park (also not signposted). The castle and car park are chargeable to non-NT members.
the castle is really just a ruion. There are some information boards but it's not the most inspiring of places.
Only a short visit is required

Ok, so the castle is just a ruin and aside from the gatehouse there isn't a lot of it left. However, it's in a wonderful spot on small hill that gives great views across the fields to the new castle and Sherborne itself. In the summer it's absolutely lovely and a great place to stop and have a picnic.
You also have so much great stuff to visit nearby too including the historic abbey, where 2 English kings are buried, museum and the lovely high street that includes some great pubs and eateries.
I used to be able to see this lovely castle from my bedroom window, and I still miss those wonderful views and Sherborne itself.

Friendly and informative welcome, parked on site and then off to explore.
Its worth purchasing the guidebook but there are also information boards set around the site.
Good viewpoint, the visit gives the true perspective of the importance of this site and the castle's historic past.

Great castle ruin to visit. There is a lot of space to explore, with some great views. There is also a New Sherborne Castle which you can visit.

A really nice castle to go and visit for an easy morning. It’s a ruin and there’s not loads to see but lots of informative boards and a lovely walkthrough the moat. Take a picnic and you can spend a bit longer there. Good to go here before going around the corner to the new castle.

An interesting look at history. Still had to book with English Heritage, I hadnt but they let me in as it was very quiet and only just opened.

I was the first one to arrive when it opened for the day and for a good hour or so was the only one there.
Sherborne old castle is a really impressive place to visit and explore; there's enough of it left for you to get a reasonably good idea of what it would have looked like when it was complete. One thing I really liked was that there is an official walk around a good part of the moat which helps give an idea of how deep it is and how effective it would have been as a defence against invaders.

A typical English Heritage ruin, worth a visit if history is your thing, more so if you are a local. Signage throughout the site explains the history clearly, guide books are available to purchase for more details.
We have annual membership to CADW who have a reciprocal agreement with English Heritage so took advantage of reduced admission whilst we were in the area. Pre booking is essential, there is a car park on site, we arrived whilst there was a service on at the adjacent church so the road leading up to the site was slightly chaotic, you could easily walk from Sherborne town centre.

Do they sell the Sherbourne Old Castle guidebook, the one with the red spine and not the one with the staples in it, at the Castle itself?

As a fortified palace for the Bishop of Salisbury who was one of the most powerful men in England after the king in the 12th century.
