Just tried to book tickets for their summer performances. After going online at the dedicated time I had to wait in a queue for 30 minutes! After waiting all that time I was unable to book the tickets I wanted as they were gone! All that were left were the extortionately expensive tickets that were way out of my price range! I was extremely disappointed! I emailed the customer services who I have to say were very quick with a response however not very helpful! I was told most of the member pre book tickets so for customers like me we have no chance of getting reasonable tickets! I was directed to looking at autumn tickets as these were cheaper and funded by the arts council not helpful when trying to plan a visit around work!! More need to be done to make opera accessible and inexpensive and inclusive so all can attend! Not impressed with my first booking experience with Glynebourne!

What a pity that a sublime musical experience was marred by an abysmal meal at the Middle & Over Wallop Restaurant. After negotiating their very poor website, I was looking forward to a very special meal to precede an evening of top class music. Alas - what a disappointment! At £45 for 2 courses (no choice as to which two courses you wished - if it was starter and main, then the cost was jacked up to £53, regardless. of whether you wished the pudding or not) it we should have been able to expect a good quality dining experience. The main course of turkey was bland, almost monochrome, and barely tepid, with slimy beige meat, two hard roast potatoes (hard, as opposed to crisp) , a parsnip and a carrot. We had to request gravy before a watery specimen was brought in a small individual jug. Our order of wine was plonked unceremoniously on the table in its bottle - OK, so we're not entirely helpless, but at this type of venue and at this cost, the least you should expect is for your wine to be poured into the glasses at the table. The cheese course consisted of three small slices of very ordinary cheese, a sliver of membrillo and a small individual walnut loaf (the best part of the meal - it was delicious, but microscopic : you could have balanced it on a desert spoon). Coffee was served lukewarm and stewed : on requesting that we have hot coffee, we were met with "OK I'll get it warmed for you." When it returned it was very slightly warmer but every bit as stewed. The final insult was the £21 "service charge" -what service?? Had I not wished avoid embarrassment to my guests, I would have asked that this be removed from the bill.
I would love to be able to give this review more stars as the music was magical -uplifting and the perfect start to the Festive Season : fully justifying 5 stars. However, if it were possible to give a zero score for the experience in the restaurant, this is what it would get. Come on, Glyndebourne - you really can't afford to be let down by your catering arrangements - this is a top class venue, not a school canteen. You seem to have many reviews along these lines - time to get a grip on your catering arrangements!

Came to see a performance of "The Marriage of Figaro". The auditorium is splendid and the performance itself was outstanding. Will definitely be coming back sometime

Visited Milton Keynes theatre to see Glyndbourne’s The Marriage of Figuero on tour.
It was outstanding! Such talented performers who really brought the story to life, fabulous sets and the singing was wonderful, what more could we ask for! Thank you Glyndbourne!!!

I tried to book tickets yesterday for August and sought to clarify the dress code. I was informed that evening wear was recommended. I asked for clarification in a number of ways and suggested that if I turned up in a suit and tie that might be acceptable. I was then advised that a dinner jacket and black tie was ok. When I enqired further I was quoted verbatim from the Glyndebourne website that wearing evening dress showed respect to the performers.
There was no affirmation of the dress code, but I believe the message I received was that if you are not willing to turn up in their version of fancy dress then you are not welcome.
Now here is the rub. Glyndebourne prides itself on being a registered charity and receiving no public subsidy. As a charity any taxpayer is entitled to gift aid their contribution and therefore subsidises Glyndebourne.
If Glyndebourne were privately funded, they can to determine what is an acceptable or even compulsory but as I have demonstrated they are in receipt of public subsidy. This at the least should be acknowledged on their website.
Once that has been done, then they should also get rid of the gumph about dress code showing respect for singers and musicians. I was at the Royal Opera House last week and we showed our respect for all the performers of Madama by applauding a magnificent performance. I am sure that as they acknowledged the rapturous applause the last thing on their mind was that I was not in evening dress.
In summary, dress code has nothing to do with appreciation of the arts. It only reinforces the idea that arts are for the upper classes. If Glyndebourne wishes to sustain this elitist position it should return all taxpayer subsidy and go on its elitist way.
Alternatively it should unequivocally open its doors to all who are prepared to pay the admission price.

Lovely first visit. Complimentary Ticket. The Opera was beyond excellent ‘The Wreckers”. Fantastic Well done to the Director -excellent gardens. My one moan is why is it so expensive so that only the elite can afford these places - it’s such a shame that you need to be rich to experience a good seat and an excellent opera -I would go again -but at £250 per ticket I couldn’t afford it.

This review is of our long interval dinner this evening at the Middle & Over Wallop restaurant. It was mediocre at best.
It was quite chaotic at the start with very many staff milling around in a haphazard way - and glasses getting smashed.
The waiting staff were quite untrained - dishes not put in the centre of the place, and tilted such that the sauces moved all over the plate. I asked for some more bread (they put out only one small slice each), but none came. No petit fours. No top up of coffee.
This place is a shadow of its former self and clearly the focus is on maximising profit.

Morning tour of the Glyndebourne wind turbine was highly informative. The presentation given prior to visiting the turbine was excellent and I came away with a much clearer understanding of how the turbine off sets all the energy consumed by this the fabulous opera house located in the Sussex Downs near to Ringmer. Glyndebourne is doing everything it can to reduce energy consumption (EV charging, heat pump, low energy lighting etc). The turbine had the support for Sir David Attenborough.

It was fun to be (for the second time) in a venue where style and elegance are the norm (black tie, gowns, . . . etc). Taking long intervals for dinner with time to wander the gardens is delightful and the perfect way to enjoy opera. We took in two great performances, including the summer closing (Verdi's Louisa Miller).
The dining service is excellent, but one could equally enjoy (many do) a picnic on the grounds.
For a hotel, we can highly recommend The Star hotel in Alfiston -- about 15 minutes by car. It's a beautiful area, so one ought to spend a few days there.
Perfect!

I am thinking of going to glyndebourne by taxi. As it is busy at the end of the programme is it easy to meet your taxi eg is there a taxi meeting point? Please advise where best to arrange meeting up. Thank you.
There is a very efficient and reasonable dedicated coach service which runs from Lewes railway station to the venue and returns after the performance. Joining other passengers in their posh togs setting off for a memorable evening adds another dimension to the Glyndebourne experience. I realise I haven’t answered your question but, hey, in my mind this is the answer! Enjoy your Glyndebourne event!
Is there a picnic area for winter months?
Simon H

Hi Judith. If you are coming to one of our Tour performances at Glyndebourne the answer is yes, there are two marquees available for wet weather picnicking. The Garden Marquee can be booked in advance for £5 per person, or the Greenhouse Marquee is free on a first come first serve basis on the day. Please phone the Box Office on +44(0)1273 815000 for more information or to reserve a space.

My first time at Gyndebourne this Friday - we have ordered a picnic, but can you take your own wine? How does this work? Also, do you collect your picnic before the performance or at the interval? The website doesn't make this clear?
Simon H
Lewes, UK
You are very welcome to bring your own wine and drinks, or to order them from Leith's in advance or on the day at the Long Bar. When you arrive, please take your picnic order confirmation to the picnic hut which is in between the car park and the gardens. They will advise you on what to do regarding the interval. If you have any questions at all on the day, find one of our ushers or visit the Box Office and they will take care of you. I hope you have a wonderful visit with us.

Picnicking at Glyndebourne - I have never been to Glyndebourne before, and am trying to understand the logistics of picnicking. Do people set up their picnics (tables, chairs, food, drink) before the performance and just leave them there while they watch the first act, then return to eat it in the 90 minute interval? Surely Lewes’s infamous seagulls would scoff the lot! And if this isn’t what people do, then where do they stash their food, and picnic gear while watching the first act? (Not everyone arrives by car).
Thanks!
Simon H

Hi, thanks for your enquiry. The 90 minute interval is for you to dine and there are several options available: we have three onsite restaurants, you can order a pre-prepared picnic from Leith's, or you can bring your own picnic. We also have a bar and River Cottage deli where you can buy refreshments, drinks and snacks. If choosing to picnic then you can book a space in one of our marquees, book a table and chairs from Leith's or bring your own and picnic in the gardens. As you describe above is pretty much what happens, either we or you set up the picnic in the grounds or on the balcony of the opera house ready for the interval. We don't actually get seagulls here as we are not close enough to the sea, but we would suggest that you cover foods to avoid any small birds taking advantage of them. Please let me know if you have any further questions and we hope to welcome you here at Glyndebourne in the near future.

Hi, Youlanda. What would you like to know about this attraction?
I am considering going while at Wimbledon in July 2019. I will be staying in London. I am interested in attending the Glyndebourne music festival. However, the process of getting tickets (I live in the Caribbean) I will have no use for a subscription membership in order to purchase tickets. Are there other options please?
Simon H
Lewes, UK
Hi Youlanda, you can purchase tickets online from 6pm on Sunday March 3rd, or you can phone in to the Box Office from 10am on Monday March 4th. The Box Office number is +44(0)1273 815000.
What are the seats like? I have a really bad back and long legs, are they comfortable?
Simon H

Hi Hilary,
Please can we ask you to call our Box Office on 01273 812321. All our seats are comfortable, but we can then talk you through the best available options to ensure that you get the best seats for your needs.

Have there ever been any accusations of abuse at Glyndebourne opera?

Depending where you park it is 3-5 mins walk. There is also dressing rooms where she could change if she wants to get ready once she arrives.
