Lovely servicer, made very welcome. Covid situation handled very well. Recommend going to visit or better still going to a service

The town of Lewes has a long history and there are plaques throughout the town telling you about some of it as you explore, with the castle being built in the 11th century and the Battle of Lewes in 1264. At one time, there was also a priory and a mint and, in more recent times, it became the county town of Sussex and a port, growing in size but thankfully retaining its historic character at the centre, with buildings of different ages and with links to different people on, or spanning out from, the High Street which is like the spine of the town.
We visited on Christmas Day. You might think we were mad as, as expected, nothing was open, although there had been a church service earlier in the day, but we had a visitor from Spain and wanted to show her a little of the history and the architecture of Sussex. There are key buildings along the way including the town hall, some of the former houses and St Michael’s Church which is over 900 years old and, like the rest of Lewes, exhibits different styles of architecture from different periods, which is part of the fun of exploration, along with a fine sculpture by Harry Phillips, a member of the congregation, in 1976 and its clock.

St Michael's Church est une petite église dans la rue principale de Lewes, High Street. Comme je l'ai déjà dit auparavant, ce n'est pas une très grande église mais elle est quand même jolie avec sa haute tour. Quand on entre dans l'église, on est tout de suite époustouflé devant les magnifiques vitraux qui éclairent l'intérieur, époustouflé non pas par la lumière qu'ils dégagent mais pas la finesse des visages des saints. Je n'ai jamais vu d'aussi beaux vitraux ! J'ai aussi beaucoup aimé les bas-relief qui représentent les différentes étapes du chemin de croix de Jésus.

When you enter the church, you are immediately flabbergasted at the magnificent colour-stained glasses which light the inside, flabbergasted not by the light they are conveying but by the fineness of the saints' faces. I haven't seen any colour-painted glass as beautiful as these ! I was also impressed by the bas relief representing Jesus' different stations of the Cross.

On entering St Michael's from the busy road you are hit with beautiful peace. A stunning place of worship, a place with space to think, a place to feel inner calm and share your thoughts without interuption.
History in abundance and clearly a treasured place to pray.

Kostel vypadá z venku velice pekne, bohužel přes den je pro veřejnost uzavřeny. Hezké okolí, ale to je tak vše.

A lovely little church in the heart of the South Downs. One of the oldest buildings in Sussex, celebrating it's 900th year anniversary in 2020!
Beautiful stain glass windows and a very friendly welcome from all. Open on Tuesdays 11 am - 1pm for just a look around and multiple services on a Sunday.

I decided to pop into this church to see it. I definitely agree with other reviewers; that it's a nice place to stop into. Should you specifically visited lewes for this church: no. Will you spend more than an hour here: probably not. However, it is a lovely church and quite the sight to see, Stop in and check it out if you're in town!

This is a lovely church dating back 800 years and has a number of interesting features which are clearly outlined on the board in the entrance porch. The Pre-Raphaelite glass windows are very noteworthy. The graveyard is very overgrown.

A very beautiful church in the heart of Lewes, recently fitted large glass wall foyer keeps the wind out but lets light in, many stain glass windows with plaques and interesting interior fittings. The attached graveyard in not always open, burials ceased many generations ago. Great view of the castle from the garden also unseen areas of Lewes.

Really enjoy walking around churches looking at the architecture. This church is special as it has a round tower. Lovely view of the castle from the church yard. Beware of the bees, which are lovely to watch. One thing i would love churches to supply is a history sheet. willing to pay for them, but never get to learn the history.
