Rye Harbour nature reserve has changed so much (for the better) since I last visited almost thirty years ago. Our aim was to walk to the Mary Stanford Lifeboat House, but this proved too much on a very hot day (next time we will hire bikes from the old lifeboat station).
We parked by the Martello Tower (c.1810) and did a circular walk via the visitors centre, the harbour mouth (where we saw the seals), visiting a few hides then back to the visitors centre for refreshments.
The Rye Harbour Discovery Center (aka visitors centre) opened in 2021 and has an exhibition, shop, toilets, refreshments and excellent views across the 465 hectares (1149 acres) of reclaimed land that form the nature reserve.
Whilst we did not manage to walk as far as the Mary Stanford Lifeboat House (it is a longer walk than it looks) the harbour is known for the tragedy that happened in 1928. The lifeboat responded to a distress call that had already been sorted by another lifeboat, but in bad weather the lifeboat was lost along with all seventeen crew members.

An excellent guided walk with Chris Bentley. We have often walked around the salt marshes and lakes but never appreciated all that this place is hiding. This man knows so much about Rye Harbour, its environment and the wildlife that lives and visits he is truly an asset to Rye Harbour and Sussex Wildlife Trust. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and introducing us to the population of this wonderful site.

Thoroughly enjoyed our walk to the shore through the reserve. Unfortunately we didn't have much time so didn't go as far as I would have liked. We even saw a seal poking its head out of the waves to have a good luck at us. Surprising variety of birdlife and a great visitor's centre with a cafe to warm up afterwards.

We had a lovely walk around part of the reserve. There are some bird hides and WW2 pillboxes. It is windy here so take your coat.

For the ‘non-birdwatcher’ we enjoyed striking beach & English Channel viewing. Take time to walk up to & on the beach itself. Informative interpretation along the walk. Exposed to the channel so can be breezy. A local land-owner was obviously irritated at me for not strictly observing his well-marked ‘private property’ signs so be warned - and respectful.

If you are looking to have forelock’s tugged and bowed and scraped to, Rye May not be the place for you, hard working people, who try so very hard to please, friendly if you are nice to them but they are the sort of people who don’t suffer fools gladly, will more than help if asked politely, don’t take them for granted. A true gem of England, butcher, grocers and all things British, please don’t take Sussex folk for mugs, I would love to live in Rye, old traditional values being held dear to their hearts.

A vast area to walk your dogs and love this area. A good selection of birds to see whilst walking and worth the visit.

We love coming to the nature reserve for a lovely walk and is a great place to watch the various birds there in the hides. The new Discovery/Visitor Centre is lovely and such a wonderful addition - the cafe is always busy and popular - well worth going into if you are walking past.

This is a place that you could do with Binoculars and a long camera lense in order to see and capture views of the birds there. There is a hide that you can go in to order to see the birds that use this area.
A lot to see with plants and water features to see. There is a cafe and information centre there.
There is a free car park nearby.
This is a place well worth going to and a great place to take dogs for a walk.

Day out birding at Rye Harbour. Well maintained paths, lots of information boards on all things- history, natural history and generally really well done. Lovely visitors centre with a good cafe. Definitely a place to visit in all seasons if you are local!

Are you dog friendly?

Hi there, the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is EXTREMELY dog friendly, to the point of the Discovery Centre allowing dogs in to sit with their owners when having a cuppa and cake! Needless to say, dogs must be on a lead due to the birds and seals all over the place!! There are many doggy doo bins around the reserve for convenience as well.

Hello,
We are a church group who have a memorial service in Horns Cross on the morning of the 24th September. We would like to come afterwards to have lunch at and explore Rye Harbour. Some members are not too mobile which is why Rye itself is not really feasible but when my husband and I came to explore on Saturday the car park had a horizontal bar at a height not permitting a coach to enter. We planned to be at the harbour for about 4 hours. I know that the coach can turn round where the bus does but is there anywhere the coach could park in the event the bar is not raised at the time?
I would also like to know whether the public toilets will be open then. A contact would be very useful.
Thank you for your attention,
Monica Biggs (Mrs.)

I suggest that you contact the Tourism office for these questions, which I believe is based in the old Town Hall. Ali

It's free entry to the nature reserve, but we would appreciate a donation or purchase in our shop to help with running the reserve.
Thank-you

Can you walk there from the centre of Rye?

It is a lovely walk from the town, on leaving Rye on the A259 towards Hastings, after about 600 metres from the roundabout with the chippie on the corner, look for Rye Harbour Road on your left. Go along this road and cross the Brede Lock after just 100 metres. Then directly look for the gate on the right, not the one signed for the B&B. Then follow this lovely path all the way to Rye Harbour village and then enjpy the whole of the Nature Reserve. Have fun.

How far is the circular walk please?

The Rye circular walk via Winchelsea is about 7 miles, but there are are plenty of shorter (or longer) ones you could choose.
