Wonderful. Deeply spiritual atmosphere in the church and the grounds are lovely, cannot praise highly enough. The man giving out the dole at the front gatehouse was lovely and certainly made our visit even more special.

The Hospital of St Cross (or 'The Hospital of St Cross & Almshouse of Noble Poverty' to give it its correct and proper title) is a beautiful medieval almshouse built by Henry of Blois, brother of King Stephen of England.
Founded between 1132 and 1136, this stunning place, tucked away amongst the water meadows around the River Itchen, on the outskirts of Winchester, has been serving as an almshouse and providing care to the poor for nearly 900 continuous years.
The building (or rather collection of buildings) itself are absolutely stunning, as you would expect, but I am sorry to say that I did not have the opportunity to explore it in amy detail at all today, as I was needed elsewhere in Winchester, but I did what my friend and I came for, and that was to avail ourselves of what is known as The Wayfarer’s Dole.’
The Wayfarer's Dole is an ancient religious tradition which states that a small cup of ale and a small slice of bread would be given to anyone who knocked on the door of the Porter’s Lodge and requested the ‘Dole.’
The Porter's Lodge is very much still there, and just like all those weary poor and needy travellers all those hundreds and hundreds of years ago, we knocked on the door and were given, free of any obligation or charge, a small cup of ale and a small piece of bread.
It was wonderful taking part in a tradition dating back all those centuries and was undoubtedly the highlight of my entire trip to Winchester.
As I say, we came here purely to partake in this ancient and wonderful tradition, and did not have time to actually see any more of The Hospital of St Cross beyond the Porter's Lodge, however I shall make it a point to return here one day in the not too distant future, and fully explore the place and its undoubted abundance of history and wonder.
Indeed, I will almost certainly make it the one exception to my "never review anywhere twice" rule.
I may have seen only about ⅛ of this place, however I have seen enough to be able to urge anyone in the Winchester area to visit this beautiful place.

The oldest almshouse - and not a hospital in the modern sense - still functioning in England, and is an excellent example of a Norman church and a living community. The church itself is like a small Norman cathedral. Built on one of teh main pilgrim routes to Canterbury - the Wayfarer's Way - visitors can still enjoy the Dole ( a morsel of bread and a 'horn' - a mug - of beer) that was traditionally supplied to travellers passing by.
Concerts are held in the church on Thursday lunchtimes during the summer - well worth visiting for those alone.

A hidden gem that you must visit. The cafe serves the best tea and cake ever. Lovely seating inside and outside. So much history to see and visit here. Great walks from this location for a starting and mid point. Always recommend people to visit here.

I’d never been and haven’t even heard of it until recently. It took me about a 20 minute walk outside of the city centre to reach and is very quiet and peaceful considering. The staff were very kind and it was an absolutely beautiful day to come as the gardens looked stunning and are obviously very well kept. Not many other people at all were there and despite it not being a large area to visit, it was definitely worth the £5ish entry fee. It also has a café, shop and peaceful courtyard to enjoy as well as the church area, gardens and connection to the start point of a longer country walk. I would really recommend, especially as it is slightly off the beaten path in Winchester.

A really beautiful setting for a summer wedding, with drinks in the Master’s Garden and the wedding breakfast in a marquee. The church and the surrounding buildings are stunning, and I’d be interested to visit again to look around as a tourist.

The Hospital of St Cross is not to be missed if you visit Winchester. There are lovely gardens and buildings and the cakes in the cafe are amazing.

We discovered this little architectural gem when looking down from St Catherine's Hill, coming to understand that the two places were historically connected. Even though unable to tour the chapel and other buildings, we learnt that the hospital was originally built as an almshouse to feed the poor and hungry in 1136, a function that still exists. The setting is so tranquil; it feeds the soul as well.

If you enjoy a gentle mooch around seriously old and atmospheric buildings St. Cross Hospital, a short(ish) walk from the bustling centre of Winchester, is a must for you. St. Cross Hospital was founded between 1132 and 1136 by Henry of Blois, a grandson of William the Conqueror, who had become Bishop of Winchester in 1129 at the age of 28. The Hospital was founded to house thirteen poor men and feed one hundred men at the gate every day. The almshouses were added in the fifteenth century and they continue to house up to twenty-five retired men.

One of the few places where you really feel that you have stepped into the past. the buildings survive in their original appearance - th great ahll still has its central fire and no chimney. I watched the residents pass me in their gowns on the way to morning prayer and joined them. The minister thanked me for taking part. the church is enormous for such a small community and the setting is a delight next to the river - a two mile walk from the city centre along a good footpath suitable for Wheelchairs - LOADs of folk make the walk, evening, morning or afternoon. And for free you can partake of a piece of bread and a drink of small beer as pilgrims have done for centuries!

What time should you arrive if you want the Wayfarer's Dole? We are going to walk the St James's Way pilgrimage

Hi, has anyone been during 2021 when the church etc has been shut due to Covid ? Is there much you can do and see without going inside the buildings please? And also what is the wheelchair access like please ?
كُتب بتاريخ 14 يونيو 2021
Hi, slightly peculiar question, but I'm a travel photographer and I would like to know which days (and time) are best to catch the hospital in its most active state as I'm interested in photographing the brothers as they go about their work in the hospital (in a nonintrusive way ,don't worry). Cheers :)

Part of the brothers 'housing' agreement is to go to church every morning the service finishes about 10 am. I'm not sure they would welcome intrusive photo's but we went on a guided tour through Historic Houses Association (HHA) & they were fine with photo's then.
Contact them & ask? Some won't mind but some will.

hi,
Is there a bus service from Winchester, and the number of bus. thanks.
كُتب بتاريخ 3 أبريل 2018
Yes. The number 1 blue double decker to Southampton stops at Saint Cross Bell Inn and it is 100 metres level walk from there. Don’t get on the single decker number 1 - that turns off the main road before the destination.

How may I arrange to visit and learn about St. Cross this summer. It will be to provide background for Trollope's "The Warden"
Thank you for any assistance you can offer me.

There are a few Hotels in Winchester and The Hospital of St. Cross is a 1 mile walk from the centre. There is also public transport that will take you to the doorstep.
I should contact them firtst, if you want specific information relating to it's history. They are very helpful.
Hope the reply will assist you.
