The building is not particularly remarkable, but this is just Shaw's house, not a castle.
Not all the rooms (eg upstairs) are open, think they should be!
The stuff in the house is interesting, and the staff helpful to explain the stories behind the more exotic things.
I liked the gardens as well.

Single track roads take you to this historic house. The car park is small but we got a warm welcome from the receptionist. The house was shut but we read the info boards outside the house entrance, after visiting the famous gates. They give an insight of the man and what he achieved both during and after his lifetime.
The garden is plain and spartan, with little horticultural content. But strangely that compliments the look of the house, which has been preserved as a 1930s relic.
Worth a visit, if you’re in the area. We'll be back to visit the house.

Externally rather a plain, blocky house (verging on ugly) the interior of Shaw's Corner is attractive and homelike with many interesting artefacts of the Shaws and their lives. Paintings and sculptures abound.
The guided tour was very interesting and well put over.
The house is made less ugly by the profuse greenery surrounding it and the garden (large for a private plot but small by National Trust standards) is really lovely and a pleasure to wander around.
The tiny Ayot St Lawrence is a pretty place with a cosy, ancient pub and atmospheric, ruined church.
An enjoyable visit.

The winding lane that draws you towards Shaw's corner feels like being reeled into the place by G.B. himself. The guided tour was outstanding, far more revealing and interesting than we anticipated. A stroll around the garden finished off a most pleasant morning. An excellent example of what the national trust do best.

When my wife suggested it from the guide book, I sort of thought, OK, why not ?
Boy were my eyes opened. I had not realised what a great (significant man he was.
It is basically a former rectory, a good size, but not over big. We went round in a small guided group. Which was the right thing to do. Each tour takes about an hour. Don’t be over confident in actually finding it. We are not inexperienced, but instead of arriving in good time, we were just in time.
But the story of Bernard, was absolutely fascinating. I am glad I went.

Very intresting to see the house and the garden where George Bernard Shaw lived. Very friendly and kindly volunteers working in the shop and in the house.
Really good place to visit.

We went on one of the guided tours, which you must pre-book as it is limited to ten visitor at a time. It gives more access to the house than would be the case on a standard tour. The guide was excellent and provided lots of interesting facts about Shaw away from his life as a writer. The house is very evocative and is preserved very much as it was when Shaw lived there. The gardens are well kept and attractive. Recommended

Unfortunalely our visit was spoiled the moment we arrived. The car park is small and almost full, although it was possible to fit a couple more cars in. We parked in one such place, adjacent to the beverages van in the car park. We were shouted at to say that we couldn't park there, which seemed a bit strange - it was part of the car park. When we asked why, we were told it was because of 'Health and Safety'. That seemed strange so we asked why health and safety was being contravened. The response was: 'I don't know, my manager told me'. Interesting. We parked elsewhere ... on a road, probably less safe.
The house and grounds are ok, but arguably pricey - more palatable for NT members.
There are many other friendlier places to visit, be they NT, EH or other.
Given the unfriendliess, we won't return.

It's a beautiful house in a beautiful setting. Amazing to see the house where GBS (George Bernard Shaw) lived and worked. You can walk the grounds, and imagine yourself getting inspiration for the next book you could write - or imagine GBS himself doing the same.

Hi David , the reason that rooms at Shaws Corner are closed off are because they were cleared out and used as storage, a office, and the curator lives there. Don't you think that to change the house in anyway is not possible due to being a protected house ?

Sorry for the slow reply. It is about 25 miles from the centre of London in a village called Ayot St Lawrence. It is only a small village but five minutes walk away there is a good old fashioned pub called the Brocket Arms if you want a drink or lunch.

How do we get there by car

You really need navigation to get there. It is complicated with lots of narrow back and side roads.
