From an historic or architectural point of view there is nothing remarkable about this church. It is a simple and relatively plain church, in keeping with the quiet village it has served for 200 years.
And although I enjoy exploring grander churches, I tend to prefer simple churches that honestly reflect their location and role. And as far as location is concerned, this is a pretty spot and the driveway and church grounds are kept in immaculate condition by volunteers.
Obviously the main historic feature is the grave of John Ruskin who was a writer, philosopher, art historian, art critic and polymath of the Victorian era. As a previous reviewer has mentioned, Ruskin preferred to be buried in his village churchyard rather than in a cathedral,in London. Now that’s just nice.

Again, up early with two little ones and we wandered down the hill from The Sun. We had heard the church bells, so we popped inside and checked it out a bit before enjoying the grounds waiting for the bells to chim on the hour...which made two little ones VERY excited! Small, pretty church!

St Andrew’s Church in the centre of Coniston is a typical of the many churches rebuilt in the C19th with its solid square tower. It is a simple church and the inside is equally as simple too. A gallery was added later as congregation numbers increased.
There is no guide book and little information on the web.
The main claim to fame is the wonderfully carved cross in the grave yard, marking the grave of John Ruskin. The different panels depict the different periods of his life and interestingly, there is a detailed description of the carving in the church.
Donald Campbell is also remembered by an etched glass screen at the back of the church. When his body was eventually recovered from the lake, it was buried in the new churchyard.
In the churchyard is the grave of the grave of James Hewitson, a local man who was awarded the Victoria Cross in World War One.

The church itself was closed, as are many churches in the current circumstances with covod-19, but the graveyard was a very peaceful place to visit, with the war memorial and various graves including that of John Ruskin at the back of the church- not to be missed.

A lovely church. Tranquil, historic and with a spiritual feel. Really enjoyed this little church. John Ruskins grave in graveyard. A humble man who preferred his Coniston home rather than London Westminster Abbey.

A traditional English country church, built 200 years ago, and extended c1890. Peaceful, quiet - a local's church. Churchyard contains Ruskin's grave and also the grave of James Hewitson - a local man awarded the VC in WWI (Givenchy, 26/04/1918). The village war memorial is interesting - many of these were to 'standard designs' - this one isn't: a Celtic Cross designed by W G Collingwood.
A quiet church - a place to go into at the end of a Good Day in the Hills and say 'Thank You'.

The main attraction here is Ruskin's grave in the churchyard, Campbell's grave is not here but the is an etched glass memorial to him on the door. I couldn't see a guide book in the church or anything pointing out areas of interest, but it is worth dropping in.
