A great, small museum. Very well curated with staff willing to help and inform you. Updates the Victorian model of curation well. A great mix of topics from the arts and crafts movement, early 20thC art, endangered local species, the mining industry, etc. It's a wonder they cram it so elegantly into this small space! Others have pointed out it would be nice to have a broader view of the town rather than focusing on the museum's benefactors and famous keswickians - and I agree, some more community engaged exhibits in the main rooms would be a nice addition to a great museum.
Also the musical stones are beautiful.
PS be prepared for kids running around.

We attended an arts and craft session for children and made our own slate xylophones after playing with the museum's slate xylophone. It was a lovely session and we got to look at the museum too which had a good number of activities and trails for children. So definitely worth a visit on a rainy day in the Lake District!

Staff were very friendly and informative. My Granddaughter thoroughly enjoyed the museum and all the activities. A great place for children to learn some local history.

Unfortunately very expensive (£5 each for adults) for what is on offer. The website implied there was a decent amount but there are only two rooms which mostly focuses on 3 people rather than the history of Keswick. We only spent half an hour there having seen everything. Only good thing to say is they've got lots of activities for children (jigsaws, dressing up, colouring, reading). Seems better catered to children.

We called in this Museum and were very welcomed on entry by a most helpful volunteer who indicated that there were two rooms we could look round which sadly was the total of this museum. Clearly many people have spent a great deal of time putting the exhibits and information together and on display but on the whole all is very spartan. We were both very disappointed that there was, for instance, little in the way of how the town evolved particularly during the industrial revolution with the use of old photographs. Although our tickets allow for entry free for the next year it will be very unlikely we will return, a seniors reduction would have been more appropriate.

We had a great visit on a rainy afternoon. Many outstanding items - the giant Victorian relief map of the lakes, very informative virtual geology screen, local artists , history , flora, fauna and minerals. Good cafe. Disc parking outside.

Lovely little museum a little way out of town. Lots of information on the surrounding area and its history, Trying to play the stone piano was a laugh.

From the outset the reception staff made us feel very welcome, their enthusiasm for the museum and knowledge shone through without being overbearing.
Very COVID awareness clean,, felt safe. The museum was really interesting, lots of fascinating facts and displays about the whole of the Lake District and Keswick itself. Learnt a lot and loved the interactive musical stones. Great fun!
We also stopped off on the cafe fur drinks, amazing service, lovely teas & coffees great value & very clean too.
This museum is brilliant and such snacking value for money, ticket valid for repeat visits over 12 months.
We’ll be back and highly recommend this to others.

This was the first Museum I went into after the first lockdown and I couldn't have felt more safe. The volunteers were so welcoming. I loved learning about how Keswick and the lakes had inspired artists and writers over the centuries, plus the natural history of the region. There were loads of things for kids (big and small) to do-including the musical stones!

Are dogs allowed into the museum?

Sorry, we only allow assistance dogs into the museum. There is a dry balcony at the front of the building where they can wait though.
