This church, which is listed here as St Michael’s in Penrith, is actually St Michael’s Barton, and the correct address is:
St Michael,
Barton,
Tirril,
CA10 2LR.
It follows therefore that the other TA entry re St Michael’s Church, Barton is re the same church, and it is located just off the B5320 between the villages of Tirril and Pooley Bridge. There is a helpful signpost directing you to the 12th Century Church.
This Norman Church was built of local sandstone by an order of Augustinian monks and over the centuries it has been a place of worship for the local community as well as families from the Penrith area and much further afield, including the Lowthers, the Wordsworths, the Lancasters and the Dawes.
Although the main fabric and design of the church is Norman, there are clear mediaeval, renaissance and modern contributions so there is much to discover and admire, and a most useful church guide is available.
While I certainly admired the splendid nave dating from circa 1150, my favourite area from an architectural point of view was the base of the central tower which is the same age; and the archways and supporting walls almost give the impression that you are transferring from the nave to the chancel via a short tunnel.
This is a historic and lovely church in a beautiful location and is certainly worth a visit.

We had time to kill between buses in the attractive former Scottish town of Penrith and I spent a happy 25 minutes exploring this lovely church with a cathedral close-type buildings surround. The church yard is well looked after and crocuses were everywhere on the grassy tree area.
St Michael's is roomy and spacious, with delightful columns, balcony and painted ceiling. The stained glass is varied in age and beautiful to see. A highlight for me was the Cicely Neville window. This was a sunny day and the sunlight caused the most gorgeous reflections on the window bays.
The surprise for me were the wall-filling painted biblical scenes either side of the chancel altar - a stunning sight!
The incumbent was at work in the chapel/vestry that had been converted to an office and I passed the time of day with him, remarking upon the Battle of Waterloo officer memorial.

A beautiful ancient interior, a choir and a chapel made this very interesting. Rround the 1920 lych-gate were the names of the Fallen in WW1. Snowdrops poked through the ground round the gravestones.
