Lowther is a lovely place to spend the day. The gardens are extensive but without much winter interest. I imagine the rose garden is beautiful when in flower though.
We especially enjoyed the children's play area. Without doubt the most impressive play park I've seen. Our child enjoyed themselves for most the afternoon as did I! We have a dog though which means my partner and I took it in turns to walk him round while our child played. It dismayed me to see a few others just take their dogs in despite the notices. Somewhere to sit outside the fenced area would be great.
The cafe is bright and airy. The scone I had was lovely but served on a miniscule plate so I made a mess while eating! We arrived 3 minutes after breakfast finished and were told before even opening our mouths breakfast was no longer available. Just why though? 3 minutes.

Absolutely beautiful place, so much ground to explore which even in winter looks beautiful. Can’t wait to come back in summer to see it looking even more special. Very friendly welcome, we where given a map and a treat for the dog, the lovely lady explained that the whole place was dog friendly apart from the kids play area, even the cafe was dog friendly. The playground was epic! I went on with my son whilst my husband kept walking with the dog and it was fun for both me and my son. It is huge! There is so much to do in the castle playground and even when you think you’ve done it all you find new bits. I’ve never been to a playground quite like it. During summer I can imagine spending the whole day there. My son would never get bored. We didn’t have food while we where there but I did pop in the cafe for a drink and it looked amazing. I really can’t fault this place. We spent the whole afternoon there and just wish we’d gone earlier.

A lovely day with children, wonderful grounds and when following the map nothing is missed. Lots of climbing and running for the children with an amazing outdoor play area, well worth the money for a day's entertainment. The only downsides are that there is nowhere to sit close by the enclosed play area for dog owners who can't go in, this can become a long and painful wait as it's so big. Also when nearing the end of the day, the cafe staff make it very clear that you are no longer welcome and put chairs on the tables and hoover under your feet as you're trying to enjoy a final cuppa, obviously the owners need to address this as it's not acceptable. All in all a very good day.

We decided to visit here after looking on Tripadvisor & seeing this place as one of the top attractions in the local area to Penrith.
On arrival there was plenty of car parking spaces, & then short walk inside of the castle grounds to pay for our entry. I was able to get some discount using our family membership for the English Heritage.
After purchasing tickets we took a stroll inside the castle, looking at the vast exhibition showing the history of the castle until present the day. We then went outside to look at the front of the castle, before returning inside again the go & have a look at acres of gardens, with most being a work in progress. I would like to say, that from looking at the map they have big big plans to introduce loads of gardens around different themes, & I’m sure within years to come alot will definitely change! We covered everything south of the castle, walking all the way to “The Lost Castle” play park & sliding down the massive slide. The play park is good for young to older children, & apparently its one the largest adventure playgrounds in the country?
To finish we went to the cafe for food & drink. The cafe was outstanding, with sleek lighting, spectacular artwork & plenty of seating & high chairs available for our little one.
For food we chose the Wild Mushrooms on Toast & the Lowther Garden Burger, both of which were cooked perfectly, looked great & tasted even better! For drinks we had a hot chocolate & flat white.
To end, if didn’t live so far away, then we would definitely be annual pass members, as it has alot to offer with an exciting future ahead.

We use the cafe two or three times a month as part of our rambles around the Askham area. We will now avoid visiting on a Saturday because although naturally it's far busier with people, it is also far busier with dogs. I counted 15 in the cafe today and several barking. That's just plain crazy, and although I understand the business model of allowing customers to bring their pets in too, I personally don't want to feel like I am sat in a kennel. The staff are friendly and work very hard and the fruit scones are excellent, so we will stick to weekday visits in future for a more relaxed experience.

We visited the castle this week and although we thoroughly enjoyed it - as we always do - I was saddened to overhear a member of staff being berated by someone (who appeared to be a senior member of staff) whilst in the cafe. The young lady working on the till tried her best to diffuse the situation, but the woman was very unpleasant and rude. She didn’t seem to mind that there was a queue of customers waiting behind her who were able to overhear the whole discussion. Maybe these kind of conversations should be taken in private in future.
We really enjoyed our food. The cheese scones are the best we have ever had, and my friend who is vegan throughly enjoyed the Garden Burger. We will be back again soon!

We were staying with friends who live close by and spent a lovely day here exploring the castle and grounds. Our little lad and our friends children loved the fort play area and tree swing. The history was fascinating and we were lucky enough to get to try some the offerings at the cafe which were very tasty. We also spent sometime exploring the wider area and thoroughly enjoyed the tree swings by the river.

Please be aware that Lowther Estates, who own and operate Lowther Castle and Gardens use a company called Intial Parking to oversee parking facilities within their properties and land throughout the Lake District. Intial Parking have a terrible reputation and track record for overzealous parking fines and aggressive enforcement.
Intial Parking, also have a standing charge against all company assets for unpaid debts and it is extremely concerning that any reputable company or organisation would engage in the services offered by such a disreputable company with such a shockingly poor reputation.
By engaging Intial Parking to operate on their properties and land, Lowther Estates are fully complicit and are accountable for this companies actions!
With such other wonderful venues in the area, such as Brockhole, Haverthwaite Railway or Beatrix Potter World, do yourself a favour and stay away from any Lowther Estates land or facilities and avoid the stress and expense of dealing with Intial Parking.
Avoid at all costs!

This is our favourite north lakes day out with our young children. The playground is fantastic, gardens wonderful to explore and cafe good to. The staff are also so friendly, we broke down so missed our pod booking but they sorted us a refund and we still got to enjoy the gardens and playground thank you.

The outdoors catering concept with the pods doesn't really work. Be better if you had ordering system via app and actually served food on plates instead of paper boxes. Was really poor and let your establishment down.

How much does it cost for entry (not during COVID I just want to plan ahead)

I think it was £12 each adult and £5 kids although you can check on their website

Is the playground open atm? And are there good cycle paths around the castle /grounds thx
Hi, our playground is open along with our tree swings which are around the gardens. We have a network or cycle trails around the wider estate for you to enjoy, bike are not permitted in the gardens. Cycle hire is available if needed via our cycle hire partners Arragons Cycles. All the details you need can be found on our website

Yes, thank you for your interest, dogs are allowed in the café provided they are on leads and kept at a reasonable distance from the food!

Yes, thank you for asking, I am afraid they do have to be on leads all the time. Otherwise it's anarchy. You can let them off in Lowther park, however, so long as there is no stock around. Which I don't think there is just now.

Is the Lost Castle Just for child or are adults able to play in it too?
the lost castle is just as much fun for grown-ups. There are some areas - which are obvious - designed just for children but all the same, everywhere is accessible for all ages. Thank you for your interest. I hope you enjoy it, when you visit.
