Very disappointed to find the tea room now relocated in the barn and using paper cups and plates. It felt incongruous in this historic location. When I commented on the paper cups, I was told "It's what people want. Takeaway". Surely it would be possible to offer a takeaway option but to serve tea in a teapot, with cups and saucers in the tea room.

Had spotted this lovely house en route to Ullswater on previous drives and always wanted to visit. Handy reduction on entry to house and garden if you are an RHS member (but check timings on website as house tours best prebooked to get the time you want). Glorious walled garden with a profusion of different spaces to enjoy. Refreshments available with good value soup and sandwich combos and interesting choice of cakes, plus an amazing selection of marmalades in shop (c.f. marmalade competition held here). A ginger and marmalade cake in the tea room got our vote of approval.
Lovely volunteers hard at work in the garden but happy to answer questions. Charming woodland trail down to a little stream with chairs/benches dotted about for those who need to sit down. We took the optional house tour in the company of a very knowledgeable guide. Pretty good value day, I'd say, especially if you have time to visit nearby Pooley Bridge and enjoy a bit of Ullswater scenery, too. Plenty to see for both garden enthusiasts (us!) and families, too, we thought.

We stayed at Ullswater Heights near Penrith and had a lovely week, not so good weatherwise but plenty to see in Lake District. Nice pubs, cafes etc all around Kendal, Keswick and Bo’ness on Windermere. Well worth a visit.

A well kept estate and house near Ullswater. A knowledgeable guide gave a very interesting tour of the house lasting about one hour. Rooms visited included those in the old Pele Tower and the Georgian part of the house. Lots of fascinating memorabilia on display. Also visited an interesting old courtyard which dated from the Elizabethan era. Only negative comment concerns the ban on photography in the house. Didn’t have time to visit the formal gardens, but will on next visit.

Disappointing visit to plant fair today. Was charged £5 admission to plant fair and told it included gardens. Website suggested plant fair free with gardens and house chargeable. Gardens looked tired and seating in need of cleaning up. Was a long trip out only to not spend much time there before going home.

This home is worth visiting for its beauty and history. The gardens are magnificent with so many different flowering plants. Utterly tranquil! Our guide, John, gave such an informative tour of the house. The house has parts that were built in the Middle Ages. The interior furnishings and paintings are beautiful and interesting, as are people who have lived there.

We have driven place many times yet never thought to stop! So when we were staying locally we decided to visit, using our "my cumbria card" we received a 10% discount. Lots of free parking nice courtyard and toilets.
We decided just to do the gardens and walked to the church in Dacre. Lucky enough to see the deers in the field.
We loved walking around the gardens and finding the dragon.
Will definitely be back and do the guided tour next time.

The gardens were spectacular but it was let down by the cafe. The gardens had an array of plants and an impressive dragon hedge sculpture. Avoid the cafe, the sandwiches were expensive but made of the cheapest bread with very little filling and all of them were given to the dog!

We went on a wonderfully informative and engaging tour of the Dalemain Mansion. Our guide was Sue who was funny and a real fount of knowledge about the building and the history of Dalemain and the surrounding area. The rooms are stunning and varied - a real storybook mansion.
Thee gardens are utterly beautiful and relaxing. If you get Sue as your guide you are lucky. She was brilliant.

Are dogs allowed

Hello Beverley,
Thank you for your question. Dogs are not allowed in the House, Gardens, or Tea Room. They are however very welcome outside in the Courtyard. We also have a wonderful walk from Dalemain to Dacre which crosses the Estate lands that dogs are most welcome on!
