‪Unfortunately famous for all the wrong reasons.‬

‪William Huskisson was a respected and notable MP ,all the great works he endeavoured upon for the peoples of his constituency were overshadowed by the tragic events that led to the death of this man.
William Huskisson became the first casualty of the new found railway system when he was struck by Stephanson's " Rocket " .
Although there was once a statue honouring this poor soul that stood on Princess Street but this was pulled down during the 1981 Liverpool Riots ,this was in the mistaken belief he was once a slave trader ,the statue now resides in Oratory adjacent to Liverpool Cathedral but housed within St James Gardens is the William Huskisson Memorial, a very eye catching structure in the beautiful and peaceful grounds of the wonderful St James Gardens.
Easy to locate along Duke Street in St James Gardens.‬

‪No statue here but still cool memorial. ‬

‪Although born in Worcestershire William Huskisson was a respected and notable local MP but unfortunately will be forever remembered as the first fatality of the newly developed railway system when Stephanson's Rocket struck this very unfortunate dignitary, known for his political intelligence but equally known as being a bit clumsy, against the advice of fellow passengers he disembarked his carriage and was struck by the train ,dying later that night ,if you visit St James Gardens looking for the statue honouring the man you will be disappointed, it originally stood on Princess Street but after the 1981 riots of Liverpool the statue was pulled down by rioters who mistakenly thought he was a slave trader, rehoused inside the beautiful Oratory by Liverpool Cathedral it now stands on Duke Street but if you venture into St James Gardens and Cemetery you have the William Huskisson Memorial, a beautiful building that looks amazing especially in the middle of this most peaceful of park areas in Liverpool. ‬

‪Possibly the first man ever to be run over by a train‬
بمفردك • يونيو 2019
‪The statue itself is pretty bog standard, which is anything but what this man's life was. To read his biography is to read that of a such a fascinating man who was both highly politically intelligent and also a clumsy foolish oaf. So his demise was probably almost inevitable as he first of all was told by his doctors not to attend the trials as he had just had major surgery, and then when the trains made a stop to take on water, he was specifically instructed not to leave the carriage he was riding in. He ignored both and he then sadly became more famous for being the first documented man to be run over by a train...and not for the great political achievements he made in his life. So although this memorial is a reminder of the man, it is also a very sad reminder.‬

‪A sorry end...‬
بمفردك • مايو 2018
‪This statue commemorates the local MP who met an untimely end when he was run over by a train during the Rainhill steam trials in the early part of the 19th Century. Ironically, Huskisson should not have been there, as he had recently undergone surgery and attended against his doctor’s advice. Known to be clumsy, he stumbled between tracks and was hit by an oncoming locomotive - braking, in those days, was very rudimentary! The engine in question was none other than Stephenson’s Rocket and his death made him the first railway fatality. It was a sad end for a man who was had risen to the highest level in English society, serving as MP for several constituencies, including Liverpool and as President of the Board of Trade. Ironically, his very public accident gave valuable publicity to Stephenson’s project.‬

‪Interesting man. Rather mundane memorial statue.‬

‪Huskisson was not only the local MP, but had been the President of the Board of Trade. However that isn’t why he is commemorated. His fame is due to the manner of his death.

He was present at the Rainhill Railway Trials in 1830 when he stepped back, tripped over the rail, fell and was run over by a train.

The worlds first rail casualty.‬

‪after walking around the amazing Anglican cathedral my wife and i went for a walk around the adjoining gardens and found this lovely memorial, you can tell that the person it was built for was an important person due to the size and quality of the build, a little research told me it was for a local MP‬
