Although I'm not the biggest fan of Mathew Street there's no denying it's popularity.
A short narrow street packed with pubs and bars ,some souvenir shops ,a Beatles Museum and statues of The Beatles, Cilla Black and of John Lennon ,its a tourist hot spot and come the weekend a haunt of every stag & hen party that descends on Liverpool City Centre, if you've not been its well worth checking out.

Mathew Street is the epicentre of mediocre acoustic music, drunken vulgarity and cheap pints in Liverpool. Obviously, as skint locals, the latter is the only reason to visit this part of town.
Funnily enough, a majority of tourists choose to visit this street solely because of the Beatles connection, ignoring mich better bars and music venues elsewhere in town.
It's a sad state of affairs. The Beatles and merseybeat were NEW and NOW. But Mathew Street is all about the past really - people endlessly playing and listening to (bad and extremely loud) covers of Beatles and other artists, rather than discovering new Liverpool music in other places. In short - Mathew Street is a tourist trap and does a disservice to the music scene of the city.

Deze straat is een ware muziekbeleving. Veel live muziek, leuke pubs om met je biertje naar een bandje te luisteren. Top!

This place is full on - maximum volume. Bars pumping out loud music into the street - an onslaught on your ears. Loads of pubs, bars and clubs including the famous Cavern Club. Look out for the statues of Cilla Black and John Lennon.

With so much great music associated with the street, particularly in the 1960s, it was evocative strolling by.
Statues and monuments capture the excitement of the area. One to Fab John and another to exuberant Cilla Black. Incidentally the tribute to Eleanor Rigby is also worth having a look at.
Clubs are numerous including the famous Cavern, but also other well-known venues.
The Beatles Museum is a must see for fans. A terrific display is the Wall of Fame that encapsulates so much musical talent in the city, with one segment showing the multitude of No 1 hits since 1952.

I was expecting a vibrant and exciting street with a lot of music history, but I found it to be quite touristy and commercial.
The street is home to a number of bars and clubs, many of which are Beatles-themed. There are also a few souvenir shops and tourist attractions.

We had a really enjoyable visit. There is a good selection of night life and restaurants for choice, statues and culture.

Sadly, my impression of what is sold as 'the birthplace of The Beatles' is quite a poor one! Matthew Street is loud, aggressive, run down and not safe for families beyond noon! The street is full of litter, vomit stains, homeless people and drunken tourists. We went to a bar at 4pm in the afternoon (St. Pepper's) and it was so incredibly loud, we decided to leave. As we were doing so, two women were fighting with one another. We then went to Cooley's which was generally okay, although I didn't appreciate being asked if I wanted to buy "sniff" nor did I appreciate some drunks crowding around us and our wives while watching the wresting on TV. I know personal standards have fallen off a cliff in recent years, but I was still quite shocked at what we saw.
I don't feel it's a representation of Liverpool and I would not recommend going. I would go elsewhere and steer clear of the street and its vicinity.

Hi wondering if anyone has visited after lockdown eased? Me and my friends have booked to go down September weekend wondering what it will be like for walk ins or if we will need to book everything etc. As the last time we visited it was more of a bar crawl

Hi, anyone visited on a Saturday afternoon? We are unlikely to be around much after 5pm but would like recommendations for the best place to spend a few hours, good atmosphere, live music, etc etc , We are post 50 year olds with wide taste in music, except karaoke! First time to Liverpool so welcome any advice , thanks in advance .

If you find Mathew Street too rowdy there is a cluster of older pubs opposite Central Station - we tend to go there on a Saturday afternoon.
Head of Steam on Hanover Street too. Also nice places to eat up Bold Street which is nearby.

We have stayed at Hard Day's Night Hotel a couple of times now and loved it!
Is there anywhere on Mathew Street where we can get live music and dancing where we'll also be able to get a seat on Saturday night?

Soooo jealous just love Liverpool, you are central to all the bars and clubs so don't worry you will be spoilt for choice. Cavern club is a definite visit as there is music on all day, and there is a great friendly atmosphere, not somewhere you would spend a great deal of time, as it's very small inside, but a must see place. There's great cocktail bars all around, with deals on the door to entice you in, Sugar Palms is a good one. Have a great time.

No dress code in the pubs, not sure about the Cavern club in the evening, they usually let people in with trainers during the day the pubs though are ok
