‪Only open once a month (think it's first Friday) so check before visiting. I've been a couple of times and there's a surprising amount packed into somthing the size of a sitting room. All sorts of memorabilia and many photos and prints.

Best of all are the two charictors that showed us around - one in full costume (which wasn't at all disconcerting - really rather relaxed in fact) . Both very knowledgeable, and there is more to clowns and clowning than perhaps most would think - eg origins in Rome and Greece, Different types of clown etc..

If you happen to have an hour or spare in Dalston, or an interest in the theatre or circus, or just (like me) love unusual little museums, do get along - you do get the feeling it can't last forever! ‬

‪...A time to mourn
A time to dance” (window, video)

Here you’ll find yourself amongst all kinds of British clowning history. And there’s definitely a place for Grimaldi, the father of British clowning. Many artifacts thus allude to his great achievements and compassionate quotes. A painting just opposite the main entrance dramatized his last performance in 1823, the year he fell ill during a performance. Actors and acrobats in costumers gathered around his sick body, as if the moment of falling was captured for eternity. And don’t forget the downstairs gallery of photographs and costumes, and as a bonus you also get to chat with the staffer clowns there (it is also their work area with a desk and stool and glues).

The gallery-museum now occupies part of the now defunct Holy Trinity Church, but surprisingly, the church is also part of the clowns’ business! For 72 years the annual clowns’ Sunday service is held here, only to be moved to a bigger church ten-minute walk away to cater for the 800+ turn up. Needless to say, It is popular. And my guide stresses that yes it’s indeed a fully clowns’ service, everyone involved is a clown, with unicycles and props and loads of fun!

There goes our motto.

‪I had seen the Clown Museum in Time Out, and put it on my list of things to do in London. I happened to be working near by on the one afternoon a lunch it was open, so grabbed the chance to have a look around.

First impressions: two tiny rooms crammed with memorabilia. I didn't think I would be long here. But then one of the clowns (not dressed up) took me under his wing and talked me through the exhibits. It was completely fascinating, including the clown's church with a clown stained glass window. I ended up spending the best part of an hour there, before having to leave and get back to work. Despite my first impressions, I hadn't seen it all.

Definitely worth a visit, and the guides were so enthusiastic and knowledgable. I'll be going back to finish the tour anothe time.‬

‪Only open once a month and worth 20-60min of anyone's time. Quite a bit to see - much is printed material but artifacts and pictures too - all about the history of clowning. But the people curating and explaining where what made it for me, knowledgeable, affable and one in full costume! I found out so much I'd not known before. Lovely.... ‬

‪I spotted a rather intriguing sign outside the church for this months ago, and kept it in the back of my mind. I'd walked past the church a few more times and seeing no sign since, wasn't sure if I'd imagined this mysterious invite into a 'clown gallery'. As it turns out, it's only open the first Friday of every month. Ran by real life clowns (who have been doing this 30-40 years) who were so friendly, informative and funny, in a clown like way. I found it to be a really personal and unique experience and an insight into a slightly lost art form. If you're really lucky you'll even get a tour around the old church and see the stained glass window of a famous clown or even a magic trick... I would recommend this hidden gem to anyone who likes more unusual experiences and appreciate the vibrancy and quirkiness of all things clown!‬
