Built in 1919 after the horror of the First World War, this monument was designed to honour the glorious dead.
The 1919 structure was, and was always intended to be, a temporary structure - one that was replaced the following year with the stone monolith that we see today.
Cenotaph in Greek means "empty tomb," and so the monument became the focal point for families mourning loved ones who had died overseas with no known graves.
Today, it stands in the middle of Whitehall and serves its national duty every year when it becomes the focal point of national remembrance.
It is quite an unassuming thing, really. When you look at some of the ostentatious statues and structures built up around central London, this one feels reassuringly understated. I quite like that. It has a very British feel to it, even though it is also a focal point of remembrance for all Commonwealth nations that fought and died for freedom.
I can't say I "enjoyed" my visit to The Cenotaph, as that would be the wrong turn of phrase, however I certainly appreciated it, and would urge anyone visiting London to pay their respects as they pass by.

PROS
* Impressive imposing and striking memorial structure
* Important place to provide honor and respect
* Prominent location in the middle of Whitehall
CONS
* Not fully appreciated or respected
* Not enough attention or banners or regalia at the place
* It seems to stand forlorn in the middle of the busy Whitehall Avenue
* It is awkward and/or dangerous to stand there to give respect at the actual structure
"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... as part of my mission to see and "visit" every single "place" in Whitehall, and to write and publish a review here on tripadvisor. So that's why I did and what I am doing.
This is the central and most important of all the British war memorials, and as such, it is a large and impressive slab structure which occupies a central location in Whitehall, and in the middle of the main street.
However, it is not famously known at all and seems forelorn standing there in the middle of traffic. I crossed the street as close as I could, and stood opposite police barriers in the middle of the street and paused and faced it and nodded for a moment as a sign of respect.
Why isn't there a ceremonial 24 hour honor guard there? After all, this is regal London of the monarchy.
For reference, I saw on one of my visits to the USA that there is a 24 hour honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier but in Paris, I saw that there is also no guard at the Arc de triomphe, although that is a much more grandiose and famous and prominent place.
WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Sure- it's free
WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
Yes, and I would hope that Britain will adopt my suggestions.
ADVICE
For sure visit and honor this memorial
FULL DISCLOSURE
"I visited this place" with the plan to write a "helpful" review and to attach "helpful" photos here on tripadvisor, so if these did "help" you, please indicate that by tikking the "thumbs up" 👍 symbol. Thanks.

While with friends for weekend in London directly the one after Remembrance we had to pay a visit here and show respect. Poignant is an obvious word but my family also have links to soldiers in many first world war battles. It's wonderful to see anytime of year though.

The Cenotaph, installed since 1919 in the middle of Whitehall, pays tribute to the soldiers who died during the First World War and today, in all other subsequent military conflicts. Every year, on the Sunday closest to November 11 (Remembrance Sunday), it is the place where the population (a maximum of 10,000 sorted people) gathers to attend the parade and remember. This important memorial is rather simple in construction, a pedestal narrowing in successive stages, crowned at the top of an empty tomb, the cenotaph itself. Carved laurel wreaths adorn the south and north ends of the pedestal as well as the top. On each side of the memorial (east and west faces) are placed three flags. This monument was created in 1919 by the British architect Edwin Landseer Lutyens (1869-1944), with a rather traditionalist architectural style. It was then a temporary work (made of wood and plaster) to celebrate the return of peace but its great popularity with the population led to it being resumed in 1920, respecting Lutyens' initial plan but in using Portland stone to ensure greater durability. The empty tomb is intended to be a reminder of all those soldiers who died and were buried outside the country.

You can see this white stone edifice in Whitehall, London. Cenotaph is a Greek word meaning empty tomb. Before the Victorian Era the British commemorated their war heroes by building statues of the victorious commanders. During the World Wars many ordinary soldiers died without a grave. I love the fact that this monument was commissioned by Prime Minister David Lloyd George to honour these unsung heroes. In 1919 Sir Edwin Lutyens designed a wood and plaster monument. It gained such immense popularity that he had to replace it with this permanent Portland Stone memorial in 1920. It is a monument that pays homage to the men and women who perished in wars and other disputes. Every year there is a formal Remembrance Day ceremony held here in November in which the nation puts wreaths and commemorate all British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women who laid their life in wars and conflict. I was really touched by this monument.

Walking in Whitehall you should dedicate some time to see this monument to honor those who died during World War One. It was rededicated in 1946 to also honor the WW2 victims.

In the middle of Whitehall stands a Memorial to all those who died in a war for Greater Britain. It is a fairly simply marble cenotaph with color provided by the various flags for United Kingdom and her armed forces.

Well worth seeing - it gave me goosebumps. It was so nice to see in the flesh as I’d only ever seen it on TV. It was a little smaller than I was expecting.

A palavra Cenotaph é derivada do grego, significando 'tumba vazia'. A maioria dos mortos foi enterrada perto de onde caíram; assim, o Cenotaph simboliza sua ausência e é um ponto focal para o luto público.

Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph is something my wife has wanted to do since attending as a teenager.
An experience we will do as a family again next year.
Respect from all who attended, shivers down the spine feeling.
Something that is so so simple but is so powerful. Seeing the ex-servicemen & women coming together with former colleague’s is priceless, proud people.
And then to see the match by is a memory that will forever be there.
