We took of the free guides tours (starting 12:15 and 13:15 on the day we were there).
Good selection of interesting paintings, well explained by the guide.
Amphitheatre is like all British Roman ruins (excluding Bath!) but they tried to visualise.
Free, good clean toilets, cloakroom available.

Though small, there's actually a lot to see in this wonderful gallery. Clytemnestra's stare and blood-dripped axe are alone worth the visit.

A great (and free) place to visit, not far from Bank station. This makes it brilliant to visit at the weekend as it's relatively quiet in the actual City (business district) of London at the weekend. The art collection is mainly Victorian art, but there are modern pieces as well, plus different temporary exhibitions. As an amazing bonus, there are the ruins of the London Roman Colliseum in the basement which were discovered in the 1980's. We had a (free) guided tour which added so much to the visit. Really recommend making a visit for a few hours.

We visited because we wanted to see Rossetti's famous painting "La Ghirlandata". The website has almost no information about the collection, and the docent at the entry had no idea where we would find the painting (curious, since it is one of the gallery's most famous paintings, but the docents appeared to be volunteers, so apparently they didn't receive much training.) We found the painting and enjoyed viewing it in a quiet, uncrowded setting. The gallery has several other very fine works of art. It's small and doesn't take long to tour.

All our gallery volunteers should know where to find Rossetti's masterpiece, but I'm sorry if this wasn't the case on the day you visited. I hope you found it without too much difficulty.

This really is a gem of a gallery and the free guided tour was one of the best that I have taken (I visited on 6 Jan 22). I would thoroughly recommend a trip to the Guildhall gallery and the whole area around it is wonderful and seeped in history. Excellent all round! Thank you!!

What a lovely quiet and peaceful place to visit. The City is quiet on a Saturday anyway, but this was such a tranquil space. The paintings on display are varied and very interesting. We managed to catch a free guided tour, which was very informative and brought several of the works of art to life. The roman amphitheatre was well worth a visit, but the space was shared by a 'mudlark' exhibition - which in itself was fascinating! It did mean that you couldn't see the amphitheatre so well - we might just have to go back!
All in all its well worth a visit.

Quiet art gallery, spacious and very clean. The basement has more history of the area and London's Square Mile and the remains of the first Roman Amphitheatre. Definitely a hidden gem of London. With maps of now and then you could see how London has expanded and how parks and natural areas were slowly turned into urban concrete...

The Noel Coward Exhibition was very enjoyable with a mix of photos, costumes and theatre memorabilia charting his very illustrious life. However, many of the captions are so low that I ended up with an aching back. I understand that accessibility for wheelchair users is important but how can the exhibition designer consider thigh-level or even shin-level captions acceptable?

This was our third visit to this wonderful free art gallery.There is a Noel Coward exhibition on until December,very interesting!We also took the free guided tour,we were shown some selected paintings in detail and toured the amphtheatre.
Outside there was an exhibition about Keats.The court yard is beautiful!

Was in London with my wife for a weekend, and we have done all the major sites to see in the city, and with my visits now I like to take the chance to visit the countless number of free museums and art galleries that the city has to offer that go under the radar.
We had planned to visit the National Gallery, but could not get a booking slot, and after looking around the Guildhall Art Gallery came not behind, and it had plenty of times.
Located not far from St Paul's and Bank Tube Station in the east end of the City of London, its easily accessible.
Not the biggest, but you could easily spend a good 2 hours here, and at our time of visit they had a exhibition on the life and times of Noël Coward (who I really only knew as Mr Bridger in the Italian Job) and after this visited the Roman Amphitheatre (worth doing if you plan to visit the near by Museum of London) and the full time exhibition.
Just the right size that you can kill a couple of hours, but not over powering that you will be left drained by the end of it.

Hi. Not that I consider the suggested time spent at attractions that are listed here on TA to be anything more than a rough estimate with reasonable people spending less, or more.....but I don't see it here for Guildhall. So how long is a reasonable expectation for me, on my own, as I plan a busy day of many stops? An hour? Thanks.

I would agree with answers listed. I would say at least 1 hr but no longer than 90 min-2 hrs.
