Merita.‬

‪Closed throughout the winter. Website needs to be updated. This National Trust facility was closed inspite of the websites suggesting otherwise. It will not reopen until the spring. This needs to be reflected in the information on the website to prevent wasted journeys.‬

‪Special Victorian house. Well preserved. Even has outside toilet. It is dark inside and must have been quite a sombre atmosphere inside. Loads of personal/local history of the Carlisle’s. They didn’t have any children but he always seemed to be visiting Scotland, which couldn’t have helped! Fascinating loft conversion with roof windows, sliding shutters , etc. Clever design. Details about problems with builders, home help are very interesting. Mrs C. kept diaries which are on show. Really worth the entrance fee. Free if you are a NT member.‬

‪Once over Battersea Bridge , turn right along Cheyne walk , walk a half a mile until you see a statue of Carlyle himself and follow that road behind him into Cheyne row.
National trust owned , £8 per adult (Sept 2019 prices) to get in , Free if a member .
Tom Carlyle & his wife Jane rented this property , Which i read for £35 PER YEAR in the early 18th century , Both came from Scotland and Tom was at the time a literally star
Many a friend turned up at the house ,Charles Dickens,John Ruskin,Lord Tennyson William Morris and even a very young Oscar Wilde .
The house has a lot of memorabilia and it`s all in situ , From paintings to personal belongings , Every room tells it`s own story , And with reading cards on certain furniture telling you what you are looking at , with 2 flights of stairs and a downstairs for the servants which i found fascinating because the head house keeper made notes on some of the staff , Some of the staff were quiet disastrous ..
Low lighting makes the place like it was , And don`t forget the Garden
Small but well kept and look out for very old pictures of Carlyle in the said garden .
The two staff members who were volunteers were lovely & very welcoming
There is a toilet as well in the house to use , No where to eat/drink but with
The Kings rd just round the corner with plenty of places .
A lovely place to visit and the river Thames just over the main rd and Battersea park over the bridge it makes a great day out ..‬

‪We really enjoyed our visit. Incredibly interesting house, and so well preserved since the late 1800s! Situated on a quiet road with a small and idyllic back garden. The two NT women who greeted us were very helpful, both with their information about the house and in filling our water bottles! Much of the visit was 'self-discovery', with the freedom to wander from room to room/floor to floor at your own pace. Lots of information cards and things to read on the way. We liked that the staff were not too intrusive in their approach, occasionally on NT other visits the staff can be a little over-bearing and a touch too opinionated - we appreciate a gentler, quieter manner. Wonderful, and well worth a visit if you want a breather from the big, busier tourist spots in London.‬

‪Visited here yesterday. A lovely property. Wonderful to think of all of the literary greats who had spent time with the Carlyle's in their cosy living room. It had such a welcoming feeling. The highlight for me however, was the delightfuly tame Robin in the garden that hopped into the house!‬

‪Small house but left much as it was when Thomas Carlyle and his wife lived here from the 1830s to the early 1880s - you get the impression they have only just popped out for a minute. Very evocative. Lots of information in the rooms - dare I say almost too much - about their life and their literary circle. I pity the poor maid who had to sleep on a camp bed in the kitchen! Can't comment on admission fees as I am a National Trust member, so got in free.‬

‪Knowing very little about Carlyle I came away informed, enlightened and laughing. It is well curated with many notices to read about life in Cheyne Row. The comments by his wife Jane are hilarious, especially about the servants. Their dog takes on a character of his own! It is delightfully presented, the guides are knowledgeable and willing to talk if you wish and the garden is delightful, with seats to enjoy. Finally I did not know how much language Carlyle gave to us.‬

‪I think it is fair to say that Carlyle is not widely read today, but in Victorian times all the leading lights of the literary world beat a path to his door. This property is where the Carlyles received the likes of Dickens, Thackeray and many many more, and the property gives a real image of what life must have been like in those days. There is a wealth of information on display to bring the property to life and if anything is missing the knowledgeable room guides can complete.

Carlyle was born in a small property in the Scottish border country and came south with his wife to write. They leased this house in Chelsea (then a working village - not the posh suburb of today) and lived here until their deaths. The family surrendered the lease, but the Carlyles' friends bought the house and opened it as a museum, whereupon the family returned the contents, so the property is as far as possible a faithful image of the house in Victorian times, as witnessed by the oil painting in the living room depicting the house during the lives of its famous occupants. There are also many items which belonged to the Carlyles.

Best of all for me is the printed information on display, combining Carlyle's sardonic comments on all and sundry (including the many famous writers of his acquaintance) and extracts from Mrs Carlyle's letters covering literary topics, the behaviour of servants or the antics of the family dog.

The National Trust have really done a good job in this property - and best of all we saw it by ourselves!‬

‪This house dates from the early 18th century and as it was converted to a museum only a few years after Carlyle's death it is largely as he would have left it. We had an informative talk from the friendly guide before wandering around the 5 floors and small garden. There is a lot of information in the rooms, not only about Carlyle and his wife but also about the numerous VIPs who visited and most are far better known now then Carlyle is.‬
