I was walking around Hampstead Heath and ended up here one spring afternoon. Previously I did not know it even existed but left feeling very fulfilled and encourage everyone to pop in if you're in the area!
The house is beautiful, well kept, with an impressive art collection. I was so surprised to see that they had a Rembrandt portrait hanging in their midst too! The surrounding gardens are absolutely gorgeous, especially during the height of spring when I visited; lots of colourful flower bushes and well kept lawns which would be ideal for a picnic.
The absolute highlight has got to be the staff manning each room of the house. I was welcomed warmly as soon as I entered Kenwood House by a very passionate and friendly staff member. Every staff member was very enthusiastic about their role and eager to tell me the history of each room.
If you visit, I recommend sparing a few minutes to chat to each staff member as they definitely brightened up my visit to the house. And it's all for free too!

The house itself is very beautiful. There is also a collection of panting that are worth seeing. I was lucky to have several volonteer explain some of the paintings details and history which was very nice.
The garden around the house is also pretty nice.

This is a delightful house with a wonderful collection of paintings by Gainsborough, Romney, Zucci, Joshua Reynolds. The guides were very informative and helpful. We had a good light lunch from the cafe, sitting outside. We had parked our car in Winnington Road nearby, as you pay for parking in the Kenwood car park. The grounds are a good place to walk. I can thoroughly recommend a visit

I bought a friend here who hadn't been before. We only had a quick look around. The paintings are the highlights with one masterpiece after another.

Like many stately homes here in the U.K., Kenwood House is an immense estate, with splendid gardens, manicured lawns, ancient woodlands, small ponds, and varied wildlife. The ‘House’ itself is now a beautiful museum, housing exquisite treasures in the form of paintings, jewellery, and furniture.
Many ways to reach Kenwood House.
One way:
Take the tube from King’s Cross tube station.
Get off at Archway.
Catch bus #210 and get off at Kenwood.
Admission: free
Open Hours (as of April 3, 2022): 7 days/week, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
W.C.s available: very clean

Well unfortunately it was raining heavily when we visited Christmas at Kenwood, so we all got very wet and v muddy. It is quite a long walk with very annoying staff chivvying people along ( unnecessary ) or on shouting down their walk-in talkies Grrrr ! . The lights in the trees were very pretty and I thought the display on the front and back of kenwood house was spectacular It is very expensive - we paid £25 a head and the drinks and snacks exorbitant. Over £10 for a hot chocolate and a mulled wine .

To be fair, the lights are very good but way overpriced inside, eg can of tap water for £2.50. Worst was the churros guy. My 9 year old son dropped some of his chocolate sauce, and down to his last Churro asked the guy if he could have one more squirt of sauce for his last Churro. The guy said no and tried to charge him a quid! Bah humbug churros guy.

I never wrote reviews however this time I feel I need too. I went on the 5th of December to see the lights however there was a power shortage half way through I paid £45 for 2 tickets what a waste of a journey and an experience no one even approached us to explain. I contacted customer services on the same day to ask for some sort of refund and I still have heard nothing back over a week later. If I was you I wouldn't bother as not only was the experience disappointing but the customer service is a disgrace.

Visited Christmas Lights - fabulous. This is a COVID secure outing for all the family. A bit muddy so wear wellies or boots. Great seeing the trees, paths and house beautifully lit. Very Christmassy.

Just back from the Christmas at Kenwood light display and 'amble' here. BRILLIANT ! I think this is a new attraction, opening at 5pm each evening. The lights are fantastic - trees all lit up and various 'displays' around the grounds. Be WARNED though, it is a 2 kilometer stroll round the grounds, all clearly marked and loads of helpers to assist you if needed. Our group of 4, all in our 60s and 70s all found it thouroughly magical. There are places to buy Mulled wine and various other treats, and the light display on the front of the house was 'OUT OF THIS WORLD' !
WELL DONE to all involved, it really was excellent, and started Christmas off for us all.
THANK YOU

You have to walk up the hill to jack straws castle (5 minutes) and then it’s the 210 bus. Stop is ‘Kenwood House’.

I will be taking buses from Frien Barnet area and may stop along Muswell hill or Colney Hatch Lane along the way . Should I take the bus straight to Kenwood House so as to be able to enjoy the art work n walk in the grounds which will require an entire afternoon ?
Or should I also stop the bus journey before Kenwood House and stroll and have a picnic in the park to Kenwood House ? Which route should I take?
What is the best plan for an entire day out in the autumn ? I will have to take buses to and fro

The only bus that stops outside Kenwood is the 210 which runs from Brent Cross to Finsbury Park. However, it is a pleasant enough walk from Highgate where the 43 from Friern Barnet drops off.
On Mondays, Weds, Fridays and Saturdays there are one hour highlights tours costing £8. You may then want to go back round and examine all the other bits in between. If you also have a coffee and a mooch around the grounds, you will easily fill three hours. It's a great place for a picnic but that is very dependent on the weather.
Kenwood adjoins Hampstead Heath which is a great place for walking, especially if you go via Parliament Hill which has good views of the city.
There are a couple of great old pubs nearby: The Spaniards Inn is only about five minutes away, or the Holly Bush about 15 minutes away. By then you will be close to Hampstead and there are several interesting houses there: 2 Willow Road, Freuds's House, Fenton House, or Burgh House (which is free.)
If it's a nice day, you can walk from Kenwood to Hill Garden and Pergola about 10 minutes in the other direction. From there its a short walk through adjoining Golders Hill Park to Golders Green Station where you can get a bus back to Friern Barnet.
I hope this helps.

can we bring food and eat in the grounds of Kenwood house?
Is it advisable to walk form Muswell Hill or Colney Hatch Lane in October n November?

You can picnic in the grounds but there is also a cafe there called the Brew House which is very passable.
You can take a bus from muswell hill easily and the 210 bus stops pretty much outside the house. You can take the northern line to archway for that.
Highgate tube is a good 20 Minute walk; Hampstead tube is about 30 minutes across the Heath , but ask directions, it’s easy to get lost!

Continuing my review- atrocious to have no chairs available. My friend and I had to sit on the grass, we didn’t bring blankets because website said chairs available to hire.
Also arrived at Highgate tube at 4.30 - website said shuttle bus every 15 minutes. It finally arrived at 6pm. Appalling!
Food was very good and reasonably priced but £30 for a cheap bottle of plonk I wouldn’t pay £5 for in supermarket is daylight robbery

If I'm in English Heritage do you have to pay for a tour or can you look round without being on a paid your?

There is a 50 minute guided tour most days at 2 pm, their site says free for English Heritage members! I paid 8 pounds. I really enjoyed the tour - we learned the entire history of the house, from it's original build to various additions and learned about the people who lived there. For me the best part was learning about the fabulous art collection - the tour covered the four themes of the art. I definitely would recommend the tour, especially if you're a member. Admission is free otherwise and you can do self-guided, but it was very informative.
