We went on the Fleet Street walk with Lionel Wright on 15th September this year. Lionel had not led this particular walk before. It was extremely interesting and he showed us places we may not have found on our own. Highly recommended.

For Die-Hard Fans, take a stroll around Fleet Street and visit their many tiny alleys. There are hidden treasures everywhere. I was on a mission and found the location for the "demon barber of fleet street" and roamed around. How creepy it was! Take a look

This is one of the most historical and happening streets of London. It is named after the fleets of boats that docked near it. This street connects the Strand to St Paul’s. It hosts many interesting pubs, churches, shops and passages. It is primarily known as the home of the British Press and newspapers. It is also famous because from here you can get the best uninterrupted view of London’s iconic Saint Paul’s Cathedral. There are severe building restrictions on the buildings at that end of Fleet Street to keep this view unobstructed. This street is also famous because it was the home of some famous and infamous people like Dr. Samuel Johnson, the first English dictionary creator; Sweeney Todd, the demon barber; and foul mouthed Polly the Parrot of the historical pub Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese. This street is also a part of the classic Monopoly game where it is depicted in red colour and grouped with Strand and Trafalgar Square.

地下鉄の駅でいうとTempleとChancery Laneの間にある通りです。左右に重厚な造りの建物が並んでいて景観を楽しめました。テンプル騎士団で有名なテンプル教会もこの通り沿いにあります。

This street dates from Roman times. Businesses sprang up during the Middle Ages. it is lined with architecturally interesting buildings. Along it are still several major churches including Temple Church and St Bride's.
The street became known for printing and publishing at the start of the 16th century, and that became its most dominant trade. By the 20th century most British national newspapers operated from here. The term “Fleet Street” has become synonymous with the term British National Press.
Fleet Street has a significant number of monuments and statues along its length, including the Dragon at Temple Bar.

I spent 35 years working in the advertising industry in London and have always loved the history around Fleet Street. Which gets its name form the River Fleet - an underground river! Just wonderful to see the old buildings and many still show the heritage of the place. Not what it used to be when the newspaper wagons use to roll out late at night, but it is steeped in history.
Take a walk from Blackfriars to the Aldwych and just take your time to look at and study the architecture.
London you are a marvel

Once the heart of British national newspapers until they all moved out towards east London or Southwark. There’s some plaques and statues honouring past newspaper figures and the former offices of the Daily Telegraph offices at No. 135 is a fine Art Deco building, but now Fleet Street is just like any other street in the city.

Walk, run or catch a bus along this everchanging thoroughfare. Once the realm of horse drawn carriages, brewers drays and newspaper vans, this is now the busy artery supplying tourist to and from the great attractions. Tower Hill to St Paul's on the number 15 bus top deck. History on show and in the dry. You'll need your head on a swivel to take in all the sights. Many pubs and eateries on the way. Take a whole day and enjoy the ageless thrill of the City.

We made our way on foot from St Paul's to the West End and I was impressed by how much history is seen on Fleet Street.
Buildings previously occupied by national newspapers are still identifiable even though they left decades ago. A number of churches are in close proximity, The Royal Courts of Justice have the familiar signage seen on news reports but the building is highly impressive to look at too. The Temple Bar Memorial is another feature on the way that is worth a look at.
None of the pubs along the road were open (Sunday on a Bank Holiday weekend). However, a coffee stop at Pret broke our journey up nicely before we reached the significantly busier Covent Garden and Leicester Square area.
