London is definitely not lacking monuments, but this one is much prettier than others - a colorful water fountain sitting in the middle of gardens on the riverbank, definitely worth a visit!

Interesting monument that is very colourful and interesting to see. Sits in the Victoria Park Gardens on the banks of the Thames.

This is a Victorian water fountain situated in Victoria Tower Gardens just outside the Palace of Westminster dedicated to the work of MP Thomas Fowell Buxton who campaigned against slavery. It was first installed in 1865 by Buxton’s son Charles on the edge of Parliament Square before being moved to its present location in 1958.

The Buxton Memorial Fountain is an ornate Neo-Gothic structure sited in Westminster's Victoria Tower Gardens and commemorating the emancipation of slaves. It is a remarkable and eye-catching construction dating from the mid 1860s but somewhat lacking in its own context.
The structure has the appearance of a religious statement with its octagonal shape and many colourful adornments. It is reminiscent of the kinds of buildings once created in England as a way of passing comment and paying religious homage without explicitly saying so.
However, it is not that at all. The designed created by the 19th century MP Charles Buxton is a celebration of the emancipation of slaves through the iconography of British rulers. It is all a bit odd really. The description explains what it is but not at all why it is.
On the plus side the what is pretty impressive. The marble is in great condition. The use of granite and coloured adornments is appealing. The Gothic style arches are striking. It is a bizarre and impressive piece.
The original location was Parliament Square but it was moved in 1957 with that space now largely being about statues of people rather than ideas. The current location does work because the design features so seem to have context with the backdrop of the Palace of Westminster.
As a stand alone construction, the Buxton Memorial is striking and thought provoking. Its own context and reasons for being are a little lost in the design so it does need the explanation as there is nothing obvious about the work and its message. Still, as simply a construction to look at in Victoria Tower Gardens and to see the little fountain year round it is thoroughly pleasant.

This tribute to MP Thomas Fowell Buxton stands out from all the many other more austere memorials in and around the Palace of Westminster. It’s a glorious riot of colourful decorative tiles and intricate stone carving. Buxton campaigned against slavery both in the UK and worldwide in the early and middle 19th century. This fountain was originally located in Parliament Square after its unveiling in 1865 but was moved to its current site in 1957. Well worth seeing if you’re in the Westminster area.

All about the abolition of slavery and this used to be in Parliament Square. It’s a really artistic memorial and well worth a look. Recommended

It’s eye catching design stands out amidst the Victoria Tower Gardens. It’s an important public memorial to honour an MP who was instrumental in the emancipation of slaves and establishing the anti- slavery society.
Beautiful and ornate water drinking fountain that was moved to the current place in the gardens in the late 1900s.
A quick detour while walking around seeing the sights in the area will get you to this fountain.

This is an eye-catching public memorial. But sitting in the midst of the gardens that people use as a thoroughfare it can be easy to overlook the importance of it.
Whilst not in its original spot it is a memorial to the ending of slavery, therefore it is entirely appropriate that it is within the shadow of the Palace of Westminster where the legislation was passed. Do stop and ponder.

An important and imposing memorial, dating from the 1830s and marking the emancipation of slaves.
Named after an MP of the time, it stands on the green close to parliament, and is well worth a short diversion if you happen to be in the area.
The design is extraordinary - like something out of Hogwarts.
Crazy shape, good cause.
