‪Walking into this church was a real trip down memory lane, taking me back to my school days at a nearby school. We would come here for services from time to time. The interior is as magnificent as ever, with its imposing balconies, wonderful ceiling, unusual font cover and grey painted pews with ornate pew ends. Equally worth exploring is the churchyard with the tombs of many well known people, most notably the painter John Constable. If you’re in Hampstead, you shouldn’t miss visiting this imposing church.‬

‪I visited to see the graveyard where Bram Stoker wrote portions of Dracula, only to discover TO MY GREAT HAPPINESS that both John Harrison (clockmaker and discoverer of longitude) and John Constable are BOTH buried here! So that was a most welcome and serendipitous addition to our trip!‬

‪This is a beautiful church; I attended a 'Come and Sing ' day here. Wonderful ,spacious interior with pink, white and gold decor. It also has a gallery. It was so beautiful that even though I don't live in the area I came back for a second leisurely look ! They hold regular concerts and plays here; if you're interested I think the website has more details.‬

‪Ubicada en uno de los barrios con hermosas vistas en la ciudad. La iglesia es antigua y esta bien conservada. Se la puede visitar gratuitamente :)‬

‪Hampstead is one of the prettiest and most exclusive (read...expensive!) neighbourhoods in London. London has now grown up around it, but when the painter John Constable lived here in the early 19th century, it was still rural, far from the smog of London. The connections with Constable still endure: he lived and painted on nearby Hampstead Heath, recording different types of weather and clouds; and he's buried in St John's churchyard. To find his family tomb, turn left in front of the church and follow the signs. It's down the path leading to the very far end of the cemetery, up against a brick wall.
The cemetery is most atmospheric. It looks like it's seen better days, but that's part of its charm. Tomb slabs lean at crazy angles and are mostly overgrown by bushes and mosses. Many are cracked---they're 19th-century, mostly. The churchyard is small, but it's easy to get swallowed up by the dense greenery! There's a newer part across a lane to the right of the church, but the tombstones there are arranged in monotonous rows.
The church itself is 18th-century red brick, and still forms an active part of Hampstead as a place of worship. Inside, it looks much like some of Christopher Wren's 17th-century churches built in east-central London, having restrained decoration, and galleries over the side aisles. (I think the churchyard is more fascinating.)
The best approach to the church and cemetery is to walk along Church Row, which has virtually unbroken rows of graceful early 18th-century Georgian houses on both sides. It's like a film set come to life! H.G. Wells lived at #17.‬

‪L'interno di questa chiesa è tipicamente georgiano.
All'esterno c'è un piccolo cimitero e si può mangiare sulle panchine di fronte.‬

‪By chance my fried and I dicovered the garden of St. John Church close to southbank.
the varieties of healing plants, beautiful continental and english plants, strange plants etc, all mixed in beautiful seting around the church building was like a Meditation about life itself. Nice sculptures and a bit of peace and quite just beside roaring cars and humming busses, the seaalike sounds of river thames. amazing and heartfilling.
Cheerio to the wise gardener.‬

‪As a tourist staying for a month, I was drawn in by the wonderful cemetery -- jumbley and quietly charming, just like Hampstead. The man who inspired Peter Pan, the brilliant painter Constable, and many more.
Though I'm not a church- goer, I went three times. The choir sings beautifully. Everyone is welcomed. Dress is casual. The sermon is low on pomp, high on circumstance.
After the sermon, coffee is served in a lovely warm and intimate room.
I especially appreciated the attention to food. One section of the graveyard has a compost pile inviting the community to donate food scraps -- produce has an afterlife too!!Because life cycles are circular.
The congregation is actively pro fair trade. A wide variety of goods are available -- way more than coffee, tea and cacoa. They're doing their bit for social justice and the environment. This is the kind of global development I like to promote on the Linked in site Global Food Movements.
It's as if they believe "on earth as it is in heaven.'‬
