A friend and I helped out at the nursery in the park but didn't like it. The atmosphere and lack of support from the staff was uncalled for. They have some issues their working on and it was visible they struggled. We didn't go much and stopped volunteering.

Former volunteer with Myatt's Fields Park / Project. The park itself is nice and small but overcrowded and run by a group of paid people who exoit volunteers and discriminate against volunteers with mental and physical disabilities.
The project requests staff to recruit volunteers to run projects that look like the "community" is vibrant and full of ideas while they are recruited to come up with things.
Staff sit around for hours while volunteers labour for free. Anyone who speaks out is getting "dismissed". There is a lack of integrity and honesty with the core people who run the project and park.
From a volunteer point of view, stay away from volunteering there. Just enjoy the crowded park with a distance to the staff.

Heard a lot about the park, but dissappointed of the dog poo and rubbish around. The small Cafe is very expensive and the food takes too long to be served (we had paninis and coffee). Could improve on the overall look (rubbish, long line at the Cafe and so on).

I really like this curious little suburban park, a largely intact par from the Victorian period, and I’ve visited it in all seasons. In the 19th century it was a market garden where strawberries, rhubarb and cabbages were grown by the tenant gardener Joseph Myatt (hence the name of the park) before the field was converted into a park and opened to the public in 1889. The original garden was designed by one of the first female professional landscape gardeners of the time, Fanny Rollo Wikinson. Much of the original design is still intact, including the layout of the paths, some of the flowerbeds, the bandstand and the summerhouse.
In the summer when the rose bushes and bedding plants are in full bloom and the mature trees are in full leaf, it’s a very pretty garden. In late winter it’s not particularly a thing of natural beauty, but it certainly is a hive of activity. There’s an excellent playground for children, and it was alive with laughter and energy being burnt off. There’s also a Wildlife Area, divided into smaller zones and perfect for youngsters to explore. It too was a hive of activity - outdoor education in fine form.
The nicely maintained Victorian bandstand and summerhouse are bright and colourful features of the park, and give you a decent concept of what the park was like in Victorian times. There’s also a quaint little cafe for take-out, which was open at the time of my visit and doing a roaring trade. And to compliment the cafe, there’s a number of picnic tables and plenty of seating in the park. The park is also home to tennis courts, a football pitch, and a basketball court. In 2015, Myatt's Field Park was actually voted the 9th best park in the UK in a public vote organised by the Green Flag Award.
Somewhere in the park is an ancient mulberry tree, dating to a time when Myatt was cultivating the field, but I wasn’t sure which one it was.
The main issue with the park, from a ‘go see’ point of view, is its location. It’s not in Central London, and not the simplest to get to.
It’s in Camberwell (SE5) and a short walk from Camberwell New Road, served by bus routes 36, 436 (Paddington - Victoria - New Cross), and 185 (Victoria - Lewisham). The nearest tube is Oval (a 30 minute walk). It’s not the kind of park you may want to go out of your way to find if you are visiting London and looking for an accessible beautiful space, but if you have the time, squeeze in a little visit, especially during the summer. The paths are flat and suitable for those requiring mobility assistance; there are toilet facilities in the park.

We don’t live to far from this little gem of a park and feel so lucky to have this on our doorstep. My son loves the wild nature garden where he can climb trees plus the cafe near by. The playground is a great size and the mulberry centre is great for the little ones. And we often book the tennis court for a bit more exercise. For a little more peace try the quiet garden.

Just a nice place to be. To walk around and then to take time out at the café. Lots of effort being made with kids play areas, wildlife areas, sports areas and a public allotment.

The classic (and original!) Victorian Park. Gifted to Queen Victoria on her inauguration.
Great for dogs, kids and a good south-american-run cafe. (great hot chocolate.)

I've been here sever times with my son and friends and family. It's always been fun and clean. We had a great day out at the water area. 4 kids and 4 adults. We brought a picnic but still used the lovely cafe for hot drinks and chips when the sandwiches we made had run out.
The kids had a great time but we were a bit disappointed as the buns were over flowing, so a lot of wasps were around and several water jets were not working. They also had large barriers up in the park were they had to fix something. All in all it was a untidy and a bit dirty, however... the kids still had fun. We will go with Wimbledon next time in the hope it will be cleaner there.

But it's a secret. Shhh. Especially the June-September water play in the playground. And the good value caff. And the great seven-a-side football pitch. and the two tennis courts you don't need to book. And the quiet garden at the top.
And it is officially the first Victorian park in London, gifted to the public on Victoria's coronation in 1840. Fact.
