My wife and I visited Whitby in September 2024 and of course any visit to Whitby has to include the Abbey. I did not know it when planning our trip, but this church was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula, so it was very cool and interesting to visit St Mary's after the Abbey.
You can immediately see why this place is revered by Stoker and goths everywhere (the annual Whitby Goth Festival is hosted here). The weather worn ancient graves, all leaning hither and tither in the uneven ground creates an epic backdrop to any good horror story. The magnificent huge Celtic Cross the pride of the grounds, check out the carvings on each side representing different aspects of the life of 7th century Anglo-Saxon poet, Caedmon.
The church itself was closed, so I cannot speak to its interior. The location, in the shadow of the Abbey, overlooking the town high above the north sea, is epic though.
We didn't walk the 199 steps up the cliffs. We drove to the Abbey parking lot. Just made more sense to us - thats a whole lot of steep steps to climb.
We spent a good half hour walking the grounds. Time well spent, and as I said, a bonus to the Abbey visit. If you are in the UK, Whitby is a must visit town. It's a really lovely place, and the Abbey and St Mary's have to be on the list of things to do when you are there. Very highly recommended.

Have been to Whitby before & loved it but not this time. Stick to Silver Sands at the other end. The Abbey is far to expensive for families. the St Marys church volunteers were grumpy & (even considering the disruption of building work) this amazing church was far more tatty than I remember it. Whitby itself was very unloved, run down & full of rubbish, & noisy low grade tourist entertainment. We will not go back.

A trip to Whitby just wouldn’t be the same without a trip to this beautiful little church. We were lucky enough to attend a service at one point and it was so atmospheric. Lovely staff who take the time to talk to visitors and provide interesting historic information. See you again soon!

This is an interesting church at the top of the 199 steps. It's worth popping in to have a look around, whilst you recover from the climb. By the way, there's nothing here related to Dracula.

At the top of the 199 stairs (that in years gone by we were told were climbed by pall-bearers) is this Church currently undergoing some repairs.
It’s small with a tiny tourist “shop” when you enter. Never seen a church where all seating is in private boxes. A bit of history if you look closely. Free entrance but donations welcome.
A few hundred yards further up is the English Heritage Abbey site where some mistake the pay booth for the place to buy tickets for the outstanding (yawn) open top bus tour.

We've never visited a church like it, for it's unusual layout. The pulpit sits in the middle with box pews surrounding it. Dates from the 1100s with a fascinating history.
Accessed from Whitby up 199 steps which pallbearers used to use to bring the deceased to their final resting place. The views are fabulous. The grave yard has many interesting tombstones and was used by Bram Stoker in his story of Dracula along with Whitby abbey which is located just beyond the church.
Visit and you won't be disappointed.

This is a very atmospheric church with plenty to see and read about. Not particularly beautiful inside being more functional with old style enclosed pews.

At the top of the steps up to the Abbey, you initially come across St Mary's Church, an Anglican Church which is still open for worship today.
Having been founded around 1110, it is currently undergoing a major refurb to the chancel but is also fundraising to provide similar upgrading to the interior which dates back to the 18th Century.
Not the most attractive church internally but then, in the days when it was being built, fancy decor wasn't a priority. Wandering around this church gives a real indication of the hardships of following a religion in these days.
Easy to imagine a cold, sparsely decorated building, cramped uncomfortable seating and a long period of listening to the incessantly droning from the preacher.
Externally, the church graveyard has many well worn tombstones and it takes little imagination to get the feel of the dark, cold, misty night which found it being used as a setting in Bram Stokers novel, Dracula. I found it funny to see a sign on the door asking people not to ask where Druaculas Grave is - it doesn't exist.

Hi, How can a disabled person visit the Church? is there any parking nearby? Thank You.
كُتب بتاريخ 19 فبراير 2019
Yes you can park at the top in official car park but it’s quite a way. Maybe there are disable spaces near church. Check this out before using main car park. That is only 100m. Paving in church is slightly uneven. There is a circular bus up there. Not sure when it starts.
